Avery found accents to be interesting, especially accents that were vastly different from anything he'd heard before. That hadn't been much, since he'd only ever lived two places before he'd been here, and his hometown hadn't really been a melting pot of any possible description. Most people there talked just like he did.
"Nice t'meetcha," Avery mumbled when Miles said it was a pleasure, because he recognized a polite gesture as well as anyone. It was one of those polite but not entirely sincere things that people said, and being from the South, he was well-versed in that sort of mannerism.
He picked at one of the side seams of his jeans, his brain working frantically as he tried to come up with something to say. Miles wasn't the sort of person he found threatening, since there was nothing alpha-male about him and he seemed polite enough, but Avery had trouble talking to most people. It had always been that way. The other man saved him from his quest for words by asking him a question. "I guess... it's okay," he replied, glancing in his direction again. "Do you like it so far?"
