Avery had to work not to choke on the bite of sandwich he'd put in his mouth at what she said next. It wasn't as if he'd never heard swear words before. A lot of his co-workers had been very enthusiastic about using them colorfully and often. But emerging from the mouth of a girl who was so small and looked delicate, and in a situation where he couldn't see any real need for salty language, it seemed weird. Of course, most things here seemed weird to him, so he shouldn't be all that surprised. Strangely enough, Hannah was the sort of girl he tended to like, at least appearance-wise. Violette had been dainty like that, though not Asian.
"I'm not great with people I don't know well," he said, a reluctant smile on his lips at the gross understatement there. He wasn't necessarily great with anyone, but she didn't have to know that. Avery had thought about what it might be like to come to a new place where absolutely nobody knew him and try to change his personality, be completely different, but it hadn't taken him much thought to realize that it would never work. Who he was was too deeply ingrained in him.
