Color rose in Nate's cheeks as Daphne noticed their little mixup. He wasn't blushing a lot, but he was so pale that any discoloring showed up in his face. Most things didn't get a reaction like that out of him, but he didn't want to look stupid in front of Daphne. "Don't matter," he replied, examining his sandwich as he lifted it off his plate and back to his mouth.
Daphne's next action to remove her shoes dissolved some of Nate's discomfort. She was getting more comfortable, so that must have meant she still wanted to talk to him. He almost couldn't believe it.
"We all signed up for it," Nate agreed, politely swallowing his last bite of sandwich before speaking. "I wonder if some people came here so they could get out of bad stuff." The musing did cut a little close to home, but he knew if he played a few certain things too close to his chest people would start wondering about him. "Sometimes, you gotta pick the thing that sucks less. Lots of stuff can change in a year."
