Avery wasn't shy, and that was the mistaken idea that many people got when dealing with him. He was simply quiet, seeing the world in his own way, which unfortunately for him wasn't how most other people viewed it. Often if he could figure out how to say something in just a few words, that was what he'd do. It took all kinds of people to make a world, his aunt had used to say.
His nose wrinkled when Bobby mentioned going out to eat. That wasn't something Avery really enjoyed because he got preoccupied thinking about who was back in the kitchen and if they were getting germs and hair in the food. Back home, he'd worked in the kitchen of a restaurant, and that only served to intensify his fears about uncleanliness in a meal he might be served at an eating place. He gathered up everything he needed and then realized he'd need to wash the spatula he'd be using. As he did, he glanced over at Bobby and replied, "Not really. This was the first place I came to. Looked outside from my window."
