Part of her was sure he was going to tell her this was all a mistake and that she ought to stay and be with him and the could be together. But when he told her to be happy, her blood went cold and a fine tremble went through her. His arms went slack and she sat up, shifting off of him, leaning away from his touch. She didn't kiss him back. No. She was too devastated. The adrenaline pumping through her as though she couldn't quite believe this was actually happening.
Sliding off of him, Katie sat at the edge of the bed, sliding her feet into her shoes, taking a deep, steadying breath. "Yeah," she muttered, bitterness evident. "I'll do that. Without you."
Because she didn't need him to be happy. She didn't need a man to make her happy. Yes. She loved him and she would always love him but she wasn't going to spend her life mourning what could've been or what was supposed to be. She, was certain, she did it in her real life already. Part of her worried she never quite moved on but she wouldn't let that happen here.
"Good luck..." she whispered, glancing down at him. "With your wife. Try to make it work, Marcus. Make it worth... all this." Her smile was sharp, anger flashing in her eyes. "Try to be happy with her."
