Pansy woke with a choked off scream, hair wild around her face and tears gathered in the corner of her eyes. She could still feel the phantom hands around her neck, in her hair, at her waist. She looked wildly around the room, which was as brightly lit as if it were high noon and not nearly two in the morning. Still, she fumbled for her wand and renewed the protection charms around the bed, the windows, the door. It might have been Hogwarts, but she knew better than most that Hogwarts didn't always equal protection. Not anymore.
She forced herself to take a few deep breaths, hating how shaky they sounded even to her own ears. The iron control she'd kept over herself all day had been broken by a bad dream, and she hated that too. She hated everything about the situation she found herself in: the fear, the certainty that he was going to come for her, and the knowledge that no one could stop him. They hadn't been able to keep him in Azkaban, they wouldn't be able to keep him out of Hogwarts. He was a ghost, and ghosts always found their way inside.
Disgusted with her own thoughts, Pansy pushed herself out of bed. She'd do a quick patrol of the common room, then come back and get a start on the overload of homework the professors had already started handing out. She wasn't going to complain, the work would be the perfect distraction from her thoughts. She pulled a robe on to cover her pajamas, and quickly braided her hair so it wouldn't look as if she'd been pulling at it. A couple of quick concealment charms hid the dark circles and pale cheeks, and after a quick survey of her reflection she decided she'd do well enough for a quick round of the halls. Hopefully she'd find some stragglers from Astronomy and berating them would be able to completely chase away the demons that haunted her sleep.
If, at the same time, she reassured herself that no escaped convicts were hunting in the shadows of Hogwarts, well, that was for no one but herself to know.
