Charlie was sitting on a large, round, treee stump fifty feet away from the wooden hutches holding the remaining Acromantula. Ever since they had witnessed the murder of one of their kind by a human, they had been increasingly hostile and vicious. They refused to communicate now; hissing and raising their legs threateningly whenever approached unless it was their student. And Charlie didn't blame them.
But that meant there was only one option.
He and Hagrid had argued endlessly with McGonagall, but her point was valid. These creatures saw humans as killers now. They saw strangers as threats. Which was simply too dangerous.
So they had to be put down.
Charlie hunched over, face resting on his hands, elbows on his knees. He was obvious to the damp and cold around him. His insides were a swirling mass of guilt and anxiety and despair. He didn't want to do this. McGonagall had taken him aside and explained that Hagrid couldn't be trusted not to simply let them go, so he would have to take responsibility for them. He didn't want to do this...
