Night falls, I fall
And where were you? And where were you?
Warm skill, wolf grin, and where were you?
I fell into the moon, and it covered you in blue
Lavender walked up to the castle with someone who was going that way. She peeled off once they passed the lake, promising to remain within eyeshot of the castle. She didn't feel herself in any danger. The fuller the moon got, the more her fears and insecurities seemed to fade away. It almost made it worth it, to not be so afraid even just for a few days. She remembered that New Year's Eve had been just before the full moon. Maybe that was how she'd survived a stone pillar falling on her. She'd only planned on a short walk by the lake, and then maybe an overnight visit to Parvati, if she couldn't find anyone to take her back to Hogsmeade. As she walked though, she found herself heading toward the shadowy side of the lake. It was very cold, she knew because her breath was foggy in the moon and starlight, and in the dimmer yellow light coming from the castle windows. But she hardly felt it. She walked along the very edge of the lake, holding one pale hand out over the iced surface to watch the moon's rays dance across it, the nearby trees making dappled shadowy patterns on her skin. She reached the pier, and walked out onto the edge, leaning against one of the thick wooden pillars. Here nearer the middle of the lake, the water was still liquid, though surely still ice-cold. it made a gentle lapping noise as the chill breeze stirred the otherwise still surface. She hadn't been able to stop thinking about what the Slytherin girl Jessie had said. Could she do anything to take Greyback down? Was it possible? Did she even want to? If Parvati turned at the full moon, she might just go after him with her bare hands, she thought, a flare of uncharacteristic violence in her thoughts, and she closed her eyes, letting the night breeze off the water cool her face. Her hair whipped back behind her in long, unruly ropes, dampened by the chill in the air. Without really thinking about what she was doing, she slipped out of her shoes. The wood of the pier felt good under her feet - hard and real. She glanced up towards the castle. Probably no one would see her now, unless they came past this way. An urge was growing inside her, to be free, to be one with the moon and with the night. Knowing it was the moon's influence didn't make the urge any less strong, and she couldn't see the harm in it. Hypothermia was a real danger, of course, but for some reason that didn't seem to bother her at all at the moment. Carefully she slipped out of the rest of her clothes, letting them drop in a pile beside her, exposing her bare, scar-patterned skin to the night air. Then she raised her arms above her head and leapt in a graceful swan dive, breaking the water's surface with the barest splash. |
