It was something that was hard for Melinda even to admit to herself. She hated admitting someone else was right, especially about her. She hated even more being told no, or someone standing in her way. Obstacles were meant to be overcome, not listened to. She knew she had one speed and it was full.
"Being intelligent and acting intelligently don't always go hand in hand." She said softly. Her voice was vulnerable, yielding. That was pretty much the same thing as I'm sorry, wasn't it?
"He needed to come home," she said softly. "I needed him to come home so I didn't have to see that look on Lia's face." Her eyes stayed on the floor between them. She wanted to sit down on the floor and just feel defeated for a moment, but she wasn't entirely sure she wouldn't sink through it.
"I'd decided it was the right thing to do and I never let people stand in the way." Her eyes looked up to meet his. "I'm not sure there was a right thing to say."
