Part 29
Where: New York
When: June, 2007
Remus started for the TARDIS door but the Doctor stopped him. “Better let me go first.”
“I thought you said these were friends of yours.”
“They are,” said the Doctor. “But we’ve just appeared in their living room and
I want to make sure this is a good time to invite ourselves in.”
“It’s not polite to show up without knocking first,” joked Remus.
The Doctor smiled. “If I know them at all, they’ll already have known we were coming.” The Doctor slipped through the door, leaving Remus to wait inside the TARDIS. But Remus went to the door and opened a crack, his curiosity getting the better of him. It was a living room, just as the Doctor had said, and a small one at that. Remus didn’t recognize it, but from the sound of the television and the street traffic outside, Remus could guess they were back in an American city. He watched the Doctor from behind and saw him squat down. Into his arms ran a young girl. The Doctor cimmediately aught her up in a fierce hug, standing with her and spinning around. “Ooooh, Molly! How are you?”
“Missed you, Doctor,” she said. “I knew you were on your way here. I told Matt.”
“I thought you would.” He set her down and immediately shook hands and clapped backs with a larger, dark-haired man. “Good to see you again.”
“You too.” Then the man stepped back, looking worried. “Or does this mean the world’s going to end?”
The Doctor shook his head. “I’m here purely for recreation this time, not business. I should think one near apocalypse in the span of a few months is enough for you, isn’t it?”
Matt nodded. “Zero would be a better number. And who’s your friend? No introductions, Doctor?”
Taking that as his cue, Remus emerged, wondering how these two could possibly have known about him and the arrival. “This is my friend and traveling companion, Remus Lupin.”
“Sorry to intrude,” said Remus, smiling sheepishly. The living room was small enough already without the large, blue spaceship taking up a whole portion of it.
Matt shook Remus’ hand and flashed him a kind smile. “Any friend of the Doctor’s is welcome here. I wish Mohinder were here to say hi to you both. In fact… hold on. Let me call him and see if he’s got a minute. Do you two want anything to drink? Yes you do. One soda and one ice water coming right up.”
Remus had indeed just been thinking it would be nice to have a cold glass of water.
Clearly this man had some utilization of the skill of Legilimency, though he couldn’t be a wizard since the Doctor said he hadn’t met any before Remus.
“Mohinder’s stuck at the lab,” Matt said rather coldly as he came back into the living room with drinks for all. Molly ended up sitting in the Doctor’s lap in an arm chair while Matt and Remus sat on the couch. “He’s working for, well, it’s a terribly long story you probably don’t have time for, but he says it’s the right move to make. Guess we’ll see. And I just made the force here.”
“That’s wonderful!” the Doctor exclaimed. “Detective Matt Parkman, NYPD. Great ring to it. Cheers.”
Remus sat back, really only half listening as the three caught up. They’d seen each other just a month or two before, in Matt and Molly’s time. Remus wondered how long ago it was for the Doctor. It must be so easy to lose yourself in the timelines. Although the Doctor seemed rather separate from time itself- a complete outsider barging in. That couldn’t be Remus. No matter what, time always caught up with him- if not his timeline, then the full moon. Whether he wanted it to or not, his cycles would continue. Pretty soon he’d turn into a werewolf and no matter how much jumping through time they did or how far from the moon Remus got, he knew there was no avoiding that part of himself.
“Oy, Remus? Speaking to you here. Hello?”
Remus shook his head quickly to pull himself back, having not realized how far gone in thought he’d been. “Sorry there. What’s that?”
Matt turned to him. “I was just asking if you wanted to take a walk down the street with me.”
“Oh.” Remus stood up. “Sure, if you like.”
The Doctor and Molly quickly busied themselves with a board game on the living room coffee table as Remus followed Matt out of the apartment.
Outside, the streets were busy, and Remus realized quite quickly that he was back in New York City again. Remus tried to remember the last names of the police officers he’d met during his dealings with the Dalecks, but the names escaped him and he felt silly asking after policemen he didn’t really know in the first place.
“Dee and Ryo?” asked Matt. “Haven’t met them, sorry. Must be a different precinct.”
Remus laughed. “I knew I should have studied Occlumency.”
“What’s that?”
Remus smiled. Apparently there were limits to what Matt could read in his mind. “How to block mind readers,” he explained. “It takes years to learn and perfect such a skill, and I had other things to deal with after I graduated from school… like staying alive in a war.”
Matt nodded thoughtfully. “I have another technique for you that may be faster, then.” He grinned. “You could just ask me.”
Patting Matt’s chest, Remus laughed. “You’re right, I could. But where would the fun be in that?” A certain image of bedding Matt sprang to mind, with everything that would mean. Matt apparently could only read words, however, because when Remus intentionally thought the word ‘sex’ Matt gave a bit of a start. “How about ice cream?” Matt suggested, steering them over to a corner vendor.
They walked for a while, eating their ice cream, and wound up in a small, bright green park. They sat down on a bench and Matt stretched his arm out along the back of the bench. Remus didn’t stop him. “So the Doctor seems worried about you.”
“Does he?”
Matt nodded. “He’s not saying, and I have trouble reading his thoughts since he’s not exactly human, but I got enough.”
“He shouldn’t be worried about me,” said Remus. “I’ve had a bad run since the war but this month has been very good for me.” Matt looked concerned, but Remus shook his head. “Mine’s a long story.”
“You’re with the Doctor.” Matt ran his tongue around the part where his mint chocolate chip ice cream scoop met its sugar cone. “I figured it must be.”
Remus’ double-fudge chunk was melting down past the lip of his cone and onto his hand. He quickly licked that up. “Did the Doctor ask you to take me out?”
Matt paused a moment to swallow a mouthful of ice cream. But when he answered, he sounded honest. “No. The truth is, ever since I developed this gift, life has been a bit complicated. Maniacal serial killer on the lose, being kidnapped and studied, my wife leaves me, I’m trying to keep New York from exploding… and then Mohinder takes a job working with the people who kidnapped me?” He sighed. “I could use a little break from it all.” He drummed his fingers against the back of the bench.
“So you and Mohinder aren’t… a couple?”
Matt gave a half-hearted laugh. “Molly’s parents were killed by a very evil, very powerful villain. Mohinder and I became her protectors and guardians. We play at being domestic, as he puts it, and sometimes we have a good time. But I don’t think his heart’s in it to have a real relationship with me. He’s hiding something from me and he doesn’t even come home when something important happens like the Doctor visiting.”
Remus leaned back and rested his head sideways upon Matt’s arm in sympathy. “You’re staying together for Molly?”
Matt nodded. “There’s more to it. There’s what we shared and the fear of what might be happening. Mohinder understands me. But it’s mostly Molly, yeah.” Quickly, he added, “But that’s not a bad thing. I’d give my life to keep her safe. There’s nothing more important to me than her. He and I both love her so much.”
Remus smiled up at Matt, watching the mint chocolate chip drip onto Matt’s hand and his pants. “I think I know now why the Doctor wanted me to visit you here.” He sat up and helped himself to the man’s ice cream, cleaning up the parts that were dripping. His head was tilted, tongue moving quickly but seductively, yet his eyes stayed fixed on Matt’s. Remus touched a finger to the green ice cream drop on Matt’s leg, and brought the finger up to his mouth. He sucked, still staring at Matt. ‘Sex?’ Remus thought, making it a question this time.
Matt nodded. “I don’t have anywhere to do it, though. Mohinder’s apartment isn’t an option. I suppose we could get a hotel room but I don’t have much cash on me and I left my credit cards back at the apartment.”
“Actually, I think I have a better idea.” Remus led Matt off the path, into a small grove of trees. Remus could just about read Matt’s mind, and he knew that a detective couldn’t possibly be caught having sex in public. Remus took Matt’s hand and squeezed it tightly. “Hold on,” he said, for dramatic effect. Then he Apparated them into the TARDIS.
Matt looked around, stunned and surprised. “You can teleport like Hiro!”
Remus didn’t know who that was, unless perhaps Kurt was going by yet another name. “This is the Doctor’s ship,” Remus said, guessing Matt might not have seen it before.
That was a good guess. “It looks… smaller on the outside, doesn’t it?”
Remus laughed. “Yes, it does- oops!” He dripped onto the floor and quickly took a few bites of what was left of his ice cream so it wouldn’t drip again. He could clean that up before the Doctor found it with just a wave of his wand. “So what do you say, Matt?”
“Well, as long as you don’t think the Doctor will mind… He and Molly can’t hear us, can they?”
“Absolutely not,” said Remus. “It’s just us.”
“It’s quiet,” said Matt. “Your thoughts are the only ones I can hear.”
“Mine and yours, I hope.” Remus licked Matt’s ice cream cone again, then trailed his tongue down Matt’s hand to his arm. Remus finished off his own ice cream cone, suffered through the intense cold headache that came from swallowing so much at one time. Matt exhaled slowly. “Finish it off,” he said. “I know you want it.”
“Not fair,” Remus chuckled.
“What, reading your mind?”
“No.” Remus took a bite. “Offering me chocolate. How can I refuse?”
Matt tasted just as good as the ice cream, though, if not better. Remus finished off the cone in-between kisses trailed up Matt’s arm. One on his wrist. Then he swallowed as he skipped over the big wrist watch. One on his forearm. Then he swallowed as he skipped over the elbow. One on the firm bicep, just past the cuff of Matt’s pale blue, short-sleeved shirt. There were a few bites left of the cone, and he licked Matt’s fingers afterwards.
Then Remus unbuttoned Matt’s shirt. He let the sides flap open as he kissed Matt’s chest. And just when he was wondering if Matt was enjoying any of this, Matt moaned happily and leaned forward, rubbing his crock against Remus’ thigh. Remus couldn’t stop grinning.
Matt made little happy sounds each time he exhaled. He moved against Remus’ body- rubbing, kissing, touching- he knew exactly what Remus wanted, and Remus had never been so thrilled. Every time Remus thought about having his arse squeezed or his ear kissed, there Matt was. Every time Remus thought about having Matt’s body against his, there it was. He knew why, of course, but that didn’t make it any less special. Matt was in his head, and that was more intimate than anything else could be.
Matt had him up against one of the curving walls of the TARDIS. The alien texture felt strange against Remus’ back. But this had been his home for a month now, and Remus thought this was the perfect way to say goodbye. The hum of the living ship was low and arousing. It was nothing like Kaylee’s or Aya’s vibrating dildos, nothing that intense. It was softer, like a sensual breath or a gentle heartbeat in one. The lights flickered, the buttons flashed, the ship was welcoming this. Remus kissed Matt hard, wanting desperately to be in Matt already.
Suddenly, Matt pulled back, shaking his head.
It took Remus a moment to recover his breath. Then he asked, “What’s wrong?”
Matt looked worried, and Remus was sure he must be having second thoughts. “No, it’s not Mohinder,” Matt said. “It’s… I’m not a bottom.”
Remus chuckled. Apparently there was a drawback to this sort of sex. “That’s all right.”
Matt shook his head. “No, I heard what you wanted, and I don’t think I can give-”
“I don’t expect you to,” Remus said. “That was just a fleeting thought. I’m versatile and more than happy to take whatever you have for me.”
Matt took him on the floor. Remus closed his eyes, listening to Matt’s little grunts and pleasured sounds, listening to the TARDIS, feeling both energies filling him just a little as he gave back to them. His offering would require more cleanup when it was over, but for the moment Remus lost himself in the noises and sensations.
He helped Matt get dressed when it was over. Matt seemed slower and more relaxed now. Maybe the sugar from the ice cream was wearing off, or maybe his thrusts had let it flow right out of him. “Matt, do you mind if I ask you another question? About Molly?”
“Ask away.” Remus kissed Matt as he buttoned up the shirt.
“Molly’s special, right? She has a gift?” Matt nodded. “And so do you, right? That is why you wanted to look after her?”
Matt thought for a moment. “I suppose so. Mohinder and I understand how special she is. What she can do might scare people. But that’s not the real reason.”
“It’s not?”
He shook his head. “She helped save the world. Couldn’t have done it without her. But even though she has a gift, she’s still just a little girl. What she really needs a home and people who’ll love her. And I do.”
“And what if someone won’t let you keep her? What if someone finds out what you are and doesn’t think you can take care of her?”
Matt looked perplexed. “Doesn’t matter. I wouldn’t let anyone or anything stop me.”
