Part 28
Where: Camelot
When: May, sometime in the 12th Century
Remus couldn’t believe his eyes. It had been worth leaving it all behind- the elves, the firefly, the sexy vampire- just to be here now. “I didn’t even think it was real,” Remus said. He turned to the Doctor, shining with excitement and gratitude and still a little disbelief. “How did you know?”
“I pay attention to clues,” the Doctor said, shrugging innocently. “Or you can call it a lucky guess. Either way, Remus Lupin, welcome to Camelot.”
They stood at the top of a tall hill, looking down over wide expanses of meadow leading eventually to a dense village. And at the center of that village was an enormous white castle Remus had only seen in paintings and picture books. Books had been his only companions when he was a young child. And the tales of Arthur and his Knights of the Roundtable had given him more knowledge and examples of courage, cleverness, and passion. Remus knew each story by heart. He had imagined himself in them a hundred times- a thousand, even. But never did he once think he could actually be part of them.
The Doctor squeezed Remus’ hand. “What are you waiting for? Transfigure our clothes and Apparate us down there or we’ll miss the May Day celebration.”
Remus’ jaw dropped. “You mean they really did have those, then? With the maypole and dancing and feasting and everything?”
“Absolutely,” the Doctor nodded solemnly. “At least, I think they did. I last visited Camelot under different circumstances.”
It was May as Remus had never imagined it. He and the Doctor sat on a blanket, utterly full and exhausted, having sampled food from more than a dozen plates. The Doctor had insisted they try a bit of everything, and three goblets of spiced wine later, they were both better for so much food in their bellies. Remus had danced with the Lady Guinevere herself, and had watched the children and youngest maidens dance around and about the tall, white maypole until it was all decorated with woven, pastel-colored ribbons. Everyone had flowers in their hair- enough to make Remus’ highly-sensitive nose twitch- and the field was not just green from grass but white and yellow and pink and all other colors besides from flowers not even touched. The sky was a cloudless blue and the temperature a warm perfection. Remus watched Guinevere snuggle up on her blanket, surrounded by her ladies in waiting, and saw an extremely rough and handsome man take a seat next to her. Remus’ heart skipped a beat. King Arthur was everything Remus had ever imagined him to be- instantly, Remus felt drawn to him, wanting to take up the sword and fight in his name. If ever there were someone he would fight for, it was King Arthur.
Remus lay back, his head in the Doctor’s lap. The Doctor stroked Remus’ head lazily as he tickled a buttercup under Remus’ chin. Remus was having such a good time that he almost forgot about what else the month of May meant to him and what it did to him. That all came flooding back when Remus looked to the treeline not far from them and spotted a regal-looking man. Remus would have liked three guesses to his name, though he was fairly sure he could have guessed it in one. “Doctor?” Remus asked, softly. “Would you mind if I abandoned you yet again?”
“Not at all, Remus.”
Remus sat up, studying the Doctor’s face. “Are you certain?”
The Doctor nodded. “Of course. I want you to have fun, remember? That’s why I brought you here of all places.”
But suddenly Remus was uncertain about this. Suddenly keeping his distance seemed a better course of action. “What can I say to them? I know of their lives, their loves, their betrayals, their sacrifices. I know of their fates-”
“Just as you knew of your own weeks ago.” The Doctor was suddenly quite profound. “You made a choice then. You decided what was best. You knew you could not change your history nor anyone else’s. I trust that if you did not speak then, when you had the chance, you will not do so now.” He smiled at Remus. “Now go and have yourself some fun with Lancelot.”
Remus looked again towards the trees. “So that is Lancelot then? I thought it must be, but I wasn’t sure.”
“It is,” the Doctor said. “And I really shouldn’t meet him. I’ve met him before. I’ll meet him later. I looked different but I was still me.” He sighed. “It’s kind of complicated?”
Remus smiled at him. “It’s all right. For what I have in mind, it’s probably better I go solo anyway. But will he have me?” Remus thought briefly about using Polyjuice and a hair from Guinevere’s head. It would not be the first time in the legend that sex came because of magical disguise.
“I have a feeling he will,” said the Doctor. “But you won’t know if you don’t try.” That was true enough.
Remus did his best to approach, looking interested and cheerful but entirely laid back and non-threatening. Lancelot still appeared a bit uneasy to see him. He tried to look as though he hadn’t been looking at anything in particular. “Hello there.”
“Hello. I don’t think I recognize-”
“I’m new here. My name’s Remus.” He held up a bottle. “And I’ve brought libations.”
Lancelot started at the bottle for a moment, then smiled broadly.
