Part 26
Where: Serenity
When: Late May, 2518
Freedom. That’s what the Doctor had. He was constantly on the move, yes, and that was starting to take its toll on Remus, who more and more felt a desire to stay in one place longer. But Remus chalked that up to his instincts. He was supposed to find a mate, make a den, settle down, and have puppies, and one couldn’t do that when one was constantly jumping through worlds and through time itself. It suited the Doctor well, though. He was constantly in need of more adventure and discovery.
It seemed that the Doctor wasn’t the only one in need of freedom. The crew on the ship Remus and the Doctor had touched down in seemed to be making that their way of life. And they seemed strangely at ease with the sudden appearance of the TARDIS in their cargo hold. Remus didn’t feel seasick this time, either, but he quickly realized they weren’t in a ship at sea.
Outside the windows, he saw nothing but stars. And this wasn’t just a space station- it was a starship, free to explore not just a galaxy but an entire universe and beyond. It was hard not to see the desire in that.
“She’s a gorgeous ship,” Remus said. “Never been on one like it.” That was true enough. However, it was a very nice ship. There was a gentle hum in the air and the movement was smooth and steady. There was no issue with gravity, either, which was nice when walking around, though he thought zero gravity sex might be an interesting change of pace.
He sat in the galley with most of the crew, eating an incredibly disgusting meal. They were an interesting bunch, and even though Remus knew nothing at all about the culture or time, he could tell the crew was a sort of hodgepodge.
“Now I ain’t sayin’ you ain’t welcome aboard my ship,” said the captain. “I’ve got your payment and that’s good enough for me. Just don’t make waves while you’re here. Don’t go snooping or interfering with my crew.”
“You have our word on that,” said the Doctor.
The captain accepted that with a nod. “And we’ll respect your business as well, won’t we?” He said this pointedly towards the tough guy who’d been looking suspiciously at them since they showed up.
The guy rose to his feet. “Whatever you say,” he grumbled, and took off with a roll from the table. Remus felt a bit of relief at this.
The captain was probably the most handsome of the bunch, but moved on after the meal, having decided Remus and the Doctor weren’t threats; how he determined this, Remus couldn’t possibly guess, but the captain didn’t seem to want to waste much time on them. He was probably used to having and dealing with strange passengers.
“You’re old.” All eyes fell to the end of the table, where a skinny, young girl sat. She was staring at the Doctor. “Older than you look.” She looked distressed. “Which isn’t possible. Shouldn’t be possible.” She shook her head. “Last time I met you, you looked different. You were older than now. So many years.” She put her hands to the sides of her head and shook her head more.
Her brother, Simon, sitting beside her, tried to soothe her. But River wouldn’t be soothed easily. The absolutely stunningly beautiful woman got up, making apologies, and escorted the young girl out of the kitchen.
The Doctor looked uncomfortable, but accepted apologies and nothing more was said about it. Remus made a mental note to follow up with the Doctor in private about it, though. They couldn’t have the conversation now. And now Remus had other things to concentrate on, like his burning desire to cop off.
There were three other men dining there that Remus couldn’t help noticing. One was referred to as a Shepard, some kind of preacher. After his exploits with Nightcrawler, Remus thought he might be some fun. But the man seemed to have no obvious interest in Remus whatsoever. Another was obviously married to one of the women- the one who looked like she could break Remus in two without breaking a sweat. Best to avoid him, as well.
This left the ship’s doctor, Simon. Remus supposed he shouldn’t be surprised. The Doctor, Dr. Jackson, Dr. Adams, Dr. Bashir- it was beginning to be something of a thing for Remus. With the way Remus was feeling, however, he wasn’t especially choosy. Anyone would do. And Simon seemed like anyone. He was prim and proper, and spoke proper English, compared with the others at the table. So when they all finished their meal and Simon stayed to clean up, Remus lingered there with him on the pretenses of helping out.
“This is quite a ship,” Remus said, trying to make small talk.
The Doctor looked nervous. “Oh, um, yes. I suppose it is.”
Silence followed this, and Remus stood there awkwardly, drying the dishes.
Finally, Simon finished and turned to Remus. “I can’t,” he stated at once.
“Can’t?” asked Remus, confused. He hadn’t asked the man to do anything.
“I’d like to. Very much, in fact. You’ve really no idea how much I’d like to.” Remus risked a glance down and saw a bulge at the man’s crotch. “However, I’m technically involved with Kaylee now and I can’t possibly be with you as well. I’m sorry, but I’m just not that kind of man.”
Remus nodded with understanding. He supposed he’d been lucky to this point. So many trips to so many places… eventually he was bound to wind up somewhere where no one would have him. Remus wouldn’t mind jerking off alone in the head, though he’d prefer doing it with Simon. The words were out of them before he’d even had time to think them up. “You can bring her along, if you like.”
“Both of us?” Simon asked tentatively.
Remus nodded again. “We’re all adults here. If she’s willing to give it a go, I wouldn’t say no.”
Simon swallowed hard and took a deep breath. Remus could hear his heartbeat racing. “I’ll ask her,” he said, finally. There were three plates left, but he put them down in the sudsy sink water and left them there. “I’ll ask her right now.”
