Rating: R
Pairing: Remus/Snape
Kink(s): memory sex, candle wax
Challenge: Lusty Month of May 2008

Summary: As Snape lies dying, he guards certain memories very closely
A/N: Today's rune prompt is Th, reversed: "faced with a difficult situation [one] is unlikely to be able to make good. It signifies an obdurateness that only makes the situation worse: all advice is studiously avoided and any helping hand ignored" (Horik Svensson's The Runes). Thanks to Lia for the beta!
When Severus Snape dies, he will die with the attainment of everything he ever wished for himself vocationally, and with nothing at all. He will have surpassed his work-related goals, no longer mere professor, not even head of house, but as Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He will have the respect of his peers, or at least their fear. And throughout his life, Snape hasn't given a damn which of the two he garners more of.
Further, Snape will be regarded as his master's right hand, outstripping Lucius Malfoy with his name and money and blood status, Fenrir Greyback's brawn and psychosis, the Carrows' delight of blood and death. Blowing Wormtail's snivelling, backstabbing ways out of the water. Even, through his loyalty and usefulness, becoming more important to the Dark Lord than any of the Lestranges.
How ironic, then, that Snape will meet his maker through his master, dying at the hands of the one he has served so well through years of war and decades of peace. Or at least, the one he's appeared to serve so well. Snape is a born manipulator, a chameleon who does his best shapeshifting work by seeming to stick out of the crowd instead of blending in.
So when Snape's death overtakes him, somehow surprising him and fulfilling his predictions all at once, he will be at the pinnacle of his career. Outwardly he will not need anything else to make his life complete. He will spurn the idea that he needs anything more.
Inwardly, though. Inwardly, as he will lay dying before Harry the-Chosen-One Potter, he will cling and guard and shield another piece of information, hoarding it like the most tenacious of dragons. He will give away some memories freely, the ones about Potter's mother, their childhood, their years growing up. About his dealings with Dumbledore. Even in death, Snape will be a master manipulator, painting a specific picture that he will know Potter will sympathize with and propagate. He will hope, in doing so, that the message will reach Lupin. He will hope Lupin will think Snape's life has been about Lily and nothing else.
Otherwise, Lupin might discern the truth, after all is said and done. He might guess that in his last moments, Snape will remember the taste of Lupin's salty sweat, licked from the small of his back. He will remember the way Lupin feels in his arms, when they hold each other and pretend they aren't both playing double roles, that they have more than these fleeting moments, that they might, one day, find a kind of a sort of happiness.
Snape will remember, though he won't let Potter see and he won't let Lupin hear, that Snape's dearest memory is not of Lily Evans' flashing green eyes. It is of Lupin, spread beneath Snape as Snape pours candlewax drop by drop onto his back while he drives himself deep into Lupin's willing body. Or of Lupin gasping as he fucks Snape, as Snape sucks on Lupin's index finger, flicking his tongue against the slight webbing that is so sensitive for Lupin. Of Lupin's eyes dilating, biting his lip, biting Snape's lip, crying out words that Snape doesn't exactly repeat.
It will be these images, these sense memories, that Snape will not share with Potter. He's never shared well anyway. Potter will go away crying hero and Remus, Snape will tell himself, will never know just what those moments mean to Snape. He will never know that Remus lays dying up at the school, remembering the same moments. So close to him, and so far away. Snape will die heroically.
Selfishly.
Snapeishly.
