well, gaston here is the town's incredibly corrupt and largely insufferable sheriff! back in fairytale times he came from a minor noble family (cousins to the crown) whose lands bordered the more unpleasant end of the enchanted forest, making them the first line of defense between the region and whatever sinister stuff came slithering out of it on a routine basis. they were super arrogant, with gaston being one of the worst ego-wise in generations (an impressive feat, trust me). when belle got herself locked up under beast and key, he went to go rescue her/put the beast down to prevent further kidnappings. of course it blew up in his face because no one who wasn't suffering from stockholm syndrome or being an ottoman though to tell him the beast wasn't evil so much as suffering from poor social skills and the need for a magical shave.
