It had me low, and it had me down
Who: Nyx and Geb
What: Sean goes out to a jazz club where he meets Cat.
Where: A jazz club
When: October 15
Warnings: None yet

Sean's body and breath was still being constricted here and there, and boy did it like to appear at just the wrong time. He had fallen out of many a difficult position in his advanced classes and had to break meditation. Luckily, he was finding ways around it, and tried to only do a lot of poses in the beginner class or when really necessary. He was grateful that it hadn't been costing him his job so far, and he simply prayed that it was nothing serious, especially since he didn't exactly have medical insurance. The body constricted he could easily excuse as restless leg or too much exercise over too short a time frame, but when you threw in shortness of breath, Sean was clueless. Also, thankfully Karin was a big help and extremely understanding and calming. Sean wasn't used to someone having to calm him, not since college, which felt like another life, but it felt refreshing.

Having a bit of a lazy evening, Sean was sitting in his living-room smoking a joint, watching television, Law and Order SUV to be exact. He took a long drag from the joint, engrossed in a particular episode with Jeremy Irons. When the show went to commercial, Sean got up and headed to the kitchen, joint hanging out of his mouth. He went into the lower cabinet and reached for a box of cereal, heart shaped Kashi, shaking the nearly empty box. However, as he shook the box, disappointed in how little was left, something else began to shake, the whole apartment. Sean started to head to a doorframe for saftey, but as he did so he passed by a window. Something caught the corner of his eye, something so simple, but it made him stop and head over to the window. Out there in the street was a woman chattering away on her cell phone like nothing was happening, while Sean was shaking so badly he felt he was about to throw up. When he looked further, there were many people outside, simply going about their business.

Sean calmly put out his joint in the kitchen sink and tried to remember exactly how much he had. His first instinct was to run to Karin, but when he got a good whif of himself, he remembered how much he indeed did smoke, and something told him that Karin wouldn't be too happy. Besides, it really wasn't anything to freak out over was it? There was absolutely no reason to worry Karin further, HE was the one that was supposed to be supportive, not the other way around. Maybe now was a good time to go out to that Jazz club he had wanted to go to. One or two drinks certainly couldn't hurt, it would definitely help.

So Sean made a quick clothing change and put on a pair of blue jeans, a grey tee-shirt and a black blazer as an afterthought. After all, putting on pants that buttoned and zipped was dressing up for Sean.

When Sean entered the jazz club, he immediately headed to the bar, ordering a beer, a blue moon to be exact, with extra orange slices. Belgian beer in hand, he looked around for a seat, hoping he didn't wreak of pot. He hadn't sprayed any cologne, mainly because he couldn't stand the stuff, he had never found any he had liked. They were all too musty and potent for his taste. So it was spray some air freshner and smell like pumpkin spice (his current febreeze spray of choice), or smell like pot. He clearly chose the latter of the two.

As he looked around for a seat, he quickly saw one next to Cat. He wasn't exactly in the mood for company tonight, but at the same time, he didn't really want to be alone either. He approached Cat with a nod. "May I sit in this empty seat? I would've arrived earlier, but I hadn't meant to come tonight."

Slowly, Cat looked up at the man. He was attractive, but he smelled strangely... pie-like, though she supposed it wasn't really offensive. In general, she tended to like autumnal smells, though there was a hint of cannabis that the casual sniffer wouldn't have likely detected.

Of course, Cat was no casual sniffer.

Even so, that was hardly likely to put her off, though she was beginning to form a certain suspicion about the man's extracurricular activities. Even so, he could prove to be an entertaining companion for the evening, and what was more, she got that strange sense from him that she'd gotten from others she'd met in Newport. Nothing so strong as with Charlie or Elias -- whom she readily pushed out of her mind -- or even Rylee, but something. so she smiled and gestured for the seat.

"Of course, be my guest," she said, then took a sip of her drink.

Sean sat down next to Cat, suddenly realizing how crazy life had become lately, unable to keep a foolish grin off of his face. It seemed that ever since he had moved to Newport Beach, crazy things had started to happen. First he had met Karin with her poor reoccurring nightmares and restless nights. Then his body decided that it was going to start constricting him at any given time without warning, now he had felt an earthquake that only he seemed to have felt. If he had bothered to look up any information on the occurance, he would've discovered that a slight earthquake had occurred, but it was so minimal that no human being should've been able to detect a thing. This would've probably eased Sean's mind a bit, but it also would've given him a lot more questions than answers.

He turned to his guest, realizing that he hadn't introduced himself yet. "I'm Sean, thank you for the seat. I haven't been here before, have you?"

"A pleasure, Sean. You can call me Cat."

Once he seemed settled, she continued, "As for here, I've only been a few times before," she replied before taking a sip of her drink. "It's a bit off the beaten path, but that's how I like things, generally."

The stage was being set, though she imagined it might be a while before the band joined them. A waitress came by and she pointed to her drink with a smile, then mouthed 'Thank you' as she departed. Cat turned to look at her new table-mate.

"Are you from Newport, Sean?"

Sean took a drink from his beer, squeezing the orange slices and plopping them into his glass once he had drank enough. Sean shook his head. "I've come to the conclusion that no one is from Newport originally, that everyone winds up here somehow. I'm from San Fransisco originally and went to college there. I needed something different, so I applied to a job here, got it and moved. What about you Cat?"

"Ah, I see," she said, languidly pulling her drink stirrer around the glass. At his question, she quirked a bit of a smile.

"Well, I grew up in England and Italy. I moved to New York to go to college, and never left."

She took a sip of her drink and her smile quirked a little further up.

"Until now, I suppose. I came to Southern California for a job as well. What do you do, Sean?"

"That would definitely explain the accent." Sean took another sip from his drink. As he sat next to Cat and fought to keep the tell tale stoned grin off of his face, he realized that he would have to make this one beer last a little while. "I teach yoga and different forms of meditation at the Newport Zen Meditation Center. I went to college for accounting, but completely changed my entire life, and graduated with a degree in sociology, very different from accounting. Needless to say, my parents weren't exactly thrilled. What do you do for a living?"

Cat blinked. The outpouring of information was unexpected, and she sipped her drink as it happened, absorbing what her table-mate was revealing about himself.

When he asked her what she did, she gave him a little half-smile.

"Well, I'm in PR. Though lately I've been considering a career change myself."

Her smile widened a bit, though it was a bit wry.

"So what changed?"

"PR," he had only just met her, but the woman just didn't scream someone that worked in PR to him. Maybe he was working off of biased assumptions about what someone in PR was like, but she didn't seem the type of person to work 9-5 in a business suit to be held down in an office cubicle. "I don't know much about PR, but do you have any specific career in mind that you want to change to?"

Sean smiled, taking a long drink from his beer as he tried to think of exactly how to answer that question. So much about him had changed, but he didn't even really know where to begin, nor did he particularly want to get into his sexuality with a complete stranger, especially since he hadn't even told Karin about it yet. "Really my entire outlook on life changed, it's a bit complicated."

Cautiously, Cat smiled.

"I'm sure I don't know," she said. "I rather miss traveling. I like being out at night, certainly, but I truly don't know what I'd be qualified to do other than what I do already." She smiled. "A bit of a catch 22, I suppose."

Taking another sip of her drink, then tipping her head to a cocktail waitress, she said,

"I should mention that I like complicated. Please, for the love of God, tell me something true. No one seems to be good at that down here."

Her half-smile was playful as the waitress wended her way through the crowd toward them.

"Yes, that is a bit of a catch 22 I suppose. When you find what you're meant to do, you'll know, and you'll wonder how it took you so long to find it." Sean clearly spoke from experience on that one. He finished his beer, setting it down and relaxing a bit into his chair. "I don't know about people around here, but I'm very honest. If people don't like me for who I am, then I don't want to be friends with them anyway, that's how I look at it. The truth is that my parents wanted me to be a Christian, an accountant, and married to a beautiful woman with 2 children by now. In college I found Buddhism, yoga, meditation, pot, and a man named Mark. I now teach yoga and meditation, am a devout buddhist, and bi-sexual. Needless to say, I haven't talked to my parents in quite some time."

Cat nodded.

"That is unfortunate," she said. "I'm sorry to hear it. Though living the life one truly wants has its costs, I imagine, no?" She took another sip of her drink.

"There are times when those who love us simply can't accept what we are, rather than what they'd rather we be. For my part, I've simply lived so far from them for so long, they assume I'm doing reasonably well enough." She smiled.

"So is that what you recommend? Spirit and sexual awakening?" She gave him a half-grin as the waitress approached.

"Another of the same, please," she asked the girl, who then turned to Sean.

"Would you like another Blue Moon, sir?"

"Oh it has definite costs, I definitely have to save every penny possible." Of course he was not really very good at that. Here he was at a jazz club after having smoked a decent amount of money in pot, drinking blue moon. Saving wasn't something he enjoyed or something he was particularly good at. Sean laughed and shrugged. "Hey, it worked for me. I don't think there's anything wrong with it, especially the sexual awakening."

Sean nodded to the waitress, why not have ONE more beer? The night was still young.

With a genuine smile, she laughed with him.

"That doesn't sound like such a bad deal," she told him, taking another sip of her drink. "I have to respect someone who follows his passions."

She paused thoughtfully for a moment, wondering what sort of awakening she might find in California. Everything seemed old, like she'd done it a thousand times, but since she'd come here, met people like Sean, like Charlie, like Elias, things had started to seem different somehow. Like there might be another way.

Of course, she had no idea what that was.

"Well, yogi. I'm not certain if that's exactly the path for me, but I'd hate to be judgmental. Though I don't enjoy getting up early, by any stretch. What would you recommend for me?"

Even if he wasn't high and unable to frown, Sean would be smiling, because her smile was clearly infectious. As he sat here enjoying her company, he realized suddenly, that he was very close to passing some sort of unspoken line with Karin, he was enjoying this woman's company a bit TOO much perhaps.

As his beer arrived he held it up to her with a soft smile. "If you want a serious answer, I'd tell you to take some time and think about what it is you really want to do in life, no matter how difficult it may seem to achieve, and go for it."

Tapping her glass to his, Cat shook her head.

"Fair enough," she said with a slight smile. "In the meantime, I suppose the only thing to do is have a drink and enjoy the music, hm?"

"Yes, it really is the only thing to do. After all, music is the cure of so many ailments." Sean smiled and took a drink from his glass. "Cheers to a new friendship. If you ever need to talk Cat, I'll be around."
