Dream/History: Post-Battle Visit
Who: Aphrodite and Phobos
What: Phobos comes to visit mummy after battle
Where: Aphrodite's divine crib on Kypros - or Dreamland! :D
When: Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back in the day - like, thousands of years. Or maybe last night! :D
Warnings: Might give you cavities. We're not sure yet!

Aphrodite did not always keep track of what battle was being fought and why.

How could she? Enyalios and her children were always at battle somewhere -- or close enough to always to make keeping track of where and why far to tiresome for Aphrodite to bother with. Enyalios always came home, generally in excellent spirits whether he'd won or lost, and her more bellicose boys always performed magnificently. Or so she assumed. It was rare for her to be found in battle (though not entirely unheard of, she might be quick to point out were she so inclined), and so she trusted that the times she had seen her sweet boys in battle were good examples of how tremendously they worked both together and apart. Enyalios often came to her directly after a battle, though today he was occupied by his father, who'd wanted to speak to him about some political something or other -- who knew?

It all seemed very tedious to Aphrodite.

But as she lounged in the sun on her veranda overlooking the sea in her favorite home on Kypros, she felt one of her little loves at her threshold -- nevermind that she could no longer claim to be larger than a single one of her children. They would always be her babies -- babies who didn't need nappy changes or feedings or much of anything, which only made them that much more perfect in her mind.

"Come in, sweetheart," she called from the veranda, draped comfortably over what would someday be called a chaise longue, but for now was simply a perfect gift Hephaestus had crafted for her before he'd become so cross. Her voice carried through the space despite her not having raised it. She smiled and closed her eyes as she leaned back in the chair.

Phobos bent his head to receive the kiss from his mother, smiling slightly and even going so far as to embracing his mother in return after he cautiously glanced around to make sure his father was no where near by. The embrace brought a low grumble from deep within his throat, something akin to a purr to match the lion-like hair, teeth, and cats tongue. He was content to see his mother, always secretly enjoying her smothering, although he was somewhat disappointed that his mother had so effortlessly cleaned away the blood he had spilt. He thought it was rather fetching and brought some life to the place. It was more his style of decorating, or whatever it was called.

"But I thought you would appreciate my little trophy," he replied with a slight whine to his voice, pouting his lips and covering his fanged teeth temporarily, but his fire filled eyes still held his mischievous nature. "Everything was as bloody as we wanted. Father was glorious although he did seem disappointed that the battle ended so soon. He is causing dismay in one of the nearby villages now, nothing that will keep him long. Deimos stayed with him while I brought you my trophy."

He gave a light kick to the head which rolled onto its other side. Glancing back at his mother he grinned another toothy smile. "My Lady is fine. She was quite happy with the progress of things and I do believe was helping father with the chaos in the town. She went so far as suggesting that this soldier had a beautiful face which helped me decide to bring him to you."

Gripping his mother's delicate hand in his, he led her to the chaise lounge to sit.

Upon hearing her little cub's purr, she smiled and scratched the back of his head lightly but earnestly. Well she knew that her little darling wouldn't be pleased at the new, pristine state of her floors and his boots, but there was nothing to be done for it, was there? Her sweet Phobos could decorate his own temple however he liked (though she would certainly volunteer suggestions -- and perhaps she occasionally brought in flowers or made small... adjustments for him. After all, aesthetics were her area of expertise!), but in her home, things should be just so, to the extent they could be with the twins and her Enyalios visiting as frequently as they did.

"I appreciate your sense of humor, dear heart, and your prowess in battle, and your skill at your job, but you know Mummy doesn't like dead things." She wrinkled her nose as they sat next to each other on the chaise longue. It wasn't even quite that -- love certainly didn't end with death, but it did change. It was another name, another title for her, and at present, she was Philommeides, laughter-loving, perhaps Praxis, in action -- or at least, she would be, once Enyalios was home. But love after death was more for when she was Ourania, Melainis. Something darker, deeper, melancholic -- sometimes with a bent toward bitterness, if one wasn't careful.

But that was another story. For now, she wanted to spend time with her boy.

"In any case, I'm pleased things went as you wanted them to; of course you know your father would stay in battle for years if he could!" Aphrodite gave a little smile. "I think you might, too. Though I know you have other interests, as well." She leaned forward to press a kiss to his cheek. Fear was funny -- it manifested in so many sorts of places.

"I am pleased Eris is enjoying herself," Aphrodite said with a little smile. She wouldn't be surprised to find out Eris had made the comment deliberately to plant the idea of Phobos presenting her with his "gift" in his head, but such was the way of Eris. A born troublemaker. For the most part, Aphrodite didn't mind. She rather liked the Underworlder, really. It was particularly difficult not to when she saw how fond Phobos was of her.

"And so tell me then how you've been." Her smile widened slyly. "And about you and Eris."

Phobos' grin was something of secrecy and pride. He certainly enjoyed causing fear amongst all mortals, although he did have a great deal of fun with those who were in battle. Still, at times his creation of fear could cause a war to break up. The fear of others, of ideas, it didn't matter what it seemed to be; simply that mortals tended to grow blood thirsty when they experienced the panic he could cause.

He leaned towards his mother, accepting the kiss and reveling in the attention. He rarely got this much notice when Deimos or his other less than interesting siblings were around. He certainly could become enraptured with the joy of war but at times when the others were too busy to notice, he enjoyed slipping away to visit his mother and have her give him all of her attention. He certainly was deserving of it.

"I have been fine, Mother," Phobos replied with a slight nod before closing his eyes contently and turning his face to the sun. It warmed his face as well as blood could, but it didn't cool as quickly like blood tended to do. "You know it is good when there are wars and there have been so many recently. I'm sure Father has told you all about it. It has been continuous play and all of those who play in the battlefields are extremely content."

Eyes opening, he turned his blazing gaze back to his lovely mother. "Eris is well and my playmate of sorts, you know this. She may be an Underworlder but she certainly fits in with us, do you not agree? And she satisfies me," he continued with a flash of fangs. "She is quite good at giving me the rewards I deserve after battle."

Raising a delicate hand to his hair, she began to brush her fingers through it as she might have when he was a boy. Now it was wilder, more unruly, but truly, she hardly had a desire to tame it. It made her fancy herself a lioness tending her cub -- a fancy she enjoyed. Besides, it could still be unruly, as he undoubtedly wanted it to be, but be a bit more fetching. Phobos having just come from battle, it was full of snarls and tangles.

"I do know this," she said with a particular sort of smile. "And what sort of rewards are these, my sweetheart?"

One element of Aphrodite's parenting style was that it mirrored Enyalios in particular ways. While of course she always wanted to protect her darling loves from harm, Enyalios had ever been eager enough to teach them proper violence -- and so it was with Aphrodite and love. She felt no compunction whatsoever in asking her children about their love or sex lives; indeed, such hesitation would never have occurred to her.

"Though before you answer, I shall ask you if you mind if I brush your hair properly?" She gave him a sweet smile of entreaty.

Without answering his mother Phobos slipped to the floor, pressing his bare back against the chaise lounge and tipping his face up to the son. These moments were rare and cherished, his father never appreciating Phobos receiving such precious care, but Phobos adored his mother fussing over him. Already there was another small purr that escaped his throat in anticipation of his mother combing the blood from his hair.

"What rewards do you think, mother?" He commented with his eyes still closed. "We dance amongst the dead, dress ourselves with blood, and I take her amongst the corpses and we ride one another until there is fear and chaos surrounding us to the greatest extent." He let out a content sigh that mingled with another purr. He knew how joyous and rough his parents could be while together and felt that he and Eris could honestly surpass them in their crazed lust. Of course, he never mentioned this, not wanting to offend his dear mother.

A brush appeared in her hand, so like the one she always used to use to brush her boy's wild hair. But it occurred to her now that it wasn't that brush, that this wasn't Kypria -- that it had been so long since she'd wielded the power to summon such a simple, familiar object to her. Slender fingers stroked Phobos' hair and she released a soft sigh before she every so gently began to work her fingers through the blood-matted and tangled mass. So long since she'd truly touched her son, held him close to her, brushed his hair so, and even now, it wasn't real -- at least she didn't think so. Just the dream of a mortal.

Even so, she was grateful -- an unfamiliar feeling for a goddess, to be sure, and yet, there it as. And even so, she smiled at Phobos' words, glad he and his companion had managed to find each other again. Or were they ever apart? Now, it felt like ages ago, but the memories of that other life intruded more readily -- or she intruded more readily on that other life.

"I'm glad, sweeting," she said, brushing his mane back from his face. The tangles worked themselves free agreeably at her touch, and she smiled slightly. "It's a fine match. Though I do wish she would let me dress her, just once."

She smiled slightly at the improbability of that.

"So you've found each other then? Does your mortal know about you? Does hers?"

It wasn't so much that Phobos snuggled against his mother's legs. It was just that he appreciated pressing against her and feeling her close by. It had been so long after all and he had missed her. Still, he wouldn't admit that. That could appear weak.

"My mortal is in love with hers," Phobos replied with a laugh. "They have known one another for so long. It's been torturous to be so near to Eris but unable to reach to her. But now we are, we're pushing through. And my mortal has found you and Father. He's starting to suspect things about himself and Father. I'm sure he'll figure it out soon. He's one of the more intelligent vessels I've had."

He smiled contently, purring as his mother detangled his hair. "I do not know if Eris' mortal has figured anything out yet. She seems confused at best. What of you? What of your mortal?"

"I thought I sensed something... it is darling." she smiled, gently drawing the brush through his wild hair, one slender hand smoothing over his hair, willing away the blood and grime, as the other wielded the brush. "We shall have to help them along."

Most things were still dim... less so than they used to be. And to be honest, most of the time, Aphrodite was terribly bored by most of the people Lia interacted with. There'd been quite a bit of napping -- except, of course, when Enyalios' vessel was about, which was more and more often recently, which pleased her.

And more recently, she'd taken a special interest in this Rylee, whom she'd suspected was someone dear and important, and now, she knew. She simply knew. She'd been able to tell even in her sleep that the sweet boy was in love, and Lia knew it, too. And now it all came together.

"My sweet Lia... she's in a bit of denial, I think. She doesn't realize the power we have. But she is inordinately fond of your vessel. And she and and your father's vessel have claimed each other."

She smiled.

"Which is convenient. But no, I don't think she knows. I don't think she wants to, to be honest. She's some sort of strange seer they have in this world now; I think our ways undermine hers. Or something."

She shrugged, continuing to brush. "I never could be bothered to give much of a fig about these silly mortal developments."

Phobos dropped his cheek to rest on his mother's knee and closed his eyes, enjoying her fingers touching his hair, pulling at the drying bits of war that clung to it. If the brush hit a snag and she pulled too hard, Phobos didn't complain, he enjoyed it. But it was rare that his lovely mother did that, she had always been so gentle with him.

"Well then, my mortal will have to try and make your Lia understand. He'll figure it out and convince Lia. I'll make him." Phobos sighed and nuzzled his cheek on her knee. He wanted very much to just take a nap and continue to have his mother baby him. He didn't receive this type of treatment from Eris- not that he would ever dream of asking her to, but he enjoyed being given this well deserved attention every now and then.

"I'm growing impatient of being forced to watch the actions of my mortal, Mother," Phobos muttered. "He is just so nice. A wonderful vessel, so much like my real form, so much better than the last one. I'd rather he be happy than not because it affects his body... my body. But his constant sweetness nearly kills me. I simply want to come out and play but his will is stronger than he even realizes. He keeps pushing me aside without even trying."

Aphrodite couldn't help the smile that her Phobos' little gestures of affection brought to her face; she leaned down and kissed his temple quickly and briefly, then continued brushing his hair. There were times when she missed him as a baby; when he was small and she could hold him in her lap and brush his little mane, only for him to wriggle away at the first sign of his father. Even so, she still enjoyed these little moments between them, even though he had long since outstripped her in size.

It mattered not; he was still her sweet boy.

"I should like that," she said in response to the idea that his Rylee would awaken her Lia. "Lia needs to be aware. I think something is coming."

It was a rare moment of seriousness for Aphrodite. There was a touch of fate in her, and mostly she ignored it. But there were times when she couldn't resist it. She pushed it down.

Then, she tugged at his hair lightly with a little laugh.

"So impatient! You must wear him down. This time last year - a bit later - we began to come out. That we're here, now, talking, is a good sign that you'll be able to start to emerge soon. And if he's in love with Discord, then that will only bring him out sooner, I think. Lia and her Samuel being together so much have certainly strengthened your father and I, I think."

His purr grew in volume from the quick kiss he received and he nuzzled more. It had been so long since he had seen his mother and he had missed her more than he would ever admit.

"I'm so close to gaining control, Mother," Phobos said with a sleepy sigh. "More and more I can feel what he feels and see what he sees. He responds to the vessel of my Eris. Soon I will make him see what his true self is."

Phobos sat up, pulling away from his mother and twisting around to look up at her. "And then I'll bring you out, Mother. I'll convince your LIa, somehow, to let you take control. You won't have to be shut away any longer. You, Father, Eris and I. We'll all be together and we will give forth our powers and live as we once did." He smiled at his mother with pure excitement, even if his smiles were always so frightening, he had the neverending hopes of a child.

The feeling was mutual between them; Aphrodite had certainly missed Phobos dearly, and their little private moments of mutual affection and confidence. Though Phobos was most often seen with his father, Aphrodite was secure in the knowledge that he was as much her son as Enyalios, and it showed in both her and her sweet fear god. His purr made her smile, and when he sat up to look at her, she listened, then smiled more broadly at his words.

"That sounds perfect, my sweet love," she told him. "But don't frighten her too badly. She is a sweet girl, and enormously suited to me, I think. If a bit dull sometimes."

Leaning forward to cup his face, she pressed a kiss to his forehead, then each of his cheeks.

"It shall be as it was meant to be," she said with a smile. "As it should be."

Phobos gave a quick shake of his head, his eyes large and honest, "I promise I won't frighten her, Mother. I wouldn't scare you so I wouldn't scare her. I promise."

He grinned at his mother, looking up at her with nearly the same adoration he typically reserved for his father. Giving a shake to his hair he brought one hand through it before raising a golden eyebrow. "Is my hair up to your standards, Mother? May I go back to the battlefield?" He had his shared moment with his mother and now he was busily trying to squirm away.

Aphrodite nearly pouted, but her son's eagerness was impossible to resist. There were times when motherhood required sacrifice, she supposed. Besides, she had been looking forward to a nap. Or perhaps a bath. And Enyalios would undoubtedly be by quite soon to celebrate as only they could.

She wondered if she should get her leathers, or if he'd be more in the mood for the pink chiton -- he did so love to play "Spoils of War" after a good battle.

The chiton it would be!

In answer to his question, she ran her hand through his hair but one more time.

"You're perfect, sweeting," she told him, cupping his face and pressing a kiss to each of his cheeks before he made off. "Go have your fun, and tell your brother his mother misses him."

"I will, Mother," Phobos replied sweetly as he accepted his mothers kisses. He climbed to his feet, towering over his mother and losing any visual of the sweet little boy he had nearly been acting as. Readjusting his sword he smiled down at his mother. "I'll tell Father to hurry home for you as well and for Deimos to give you and Father a chance to... ah... enjoy one another before he comes for a visit."

Glancing over his shoulder quickly and seeing the coast was clear, he bent and kisses his mother on the top of her head before pulling back and turning away. "Until next time, Mother! I'll see you soon! Whether it is here or in the other world."
