Here She Comes
Who: Lily and Max (plus Lily's late night fling- Robert)
What: Max introduces himself to Lily’s one night stand
Where: #605
When: Early morning, just after dawn
Notes: Gdoc Placeholder! Completed!
It had rained all night. A heavy, steady rain that drowned out noises that Lily was pleased to keep to herself. It wasn’t as if she had a revolving door letting men in and out of her life, but Lily had never been one to really settle for a relationship, she’d much rather keep things simple. She had her little urban garden, her job, her yoga, and Max. She felt that she had exactly what she wanted in life. However, sometimes she became a little lonely and she would seek out companionship on a level that involved the removal of clothing.
Times like this she disliked living with Max. She didn’t want things to be awkward for him and she tried her best to keep the different men hidden. There were strict rules to follow if you were going to sleep with Lily. First being that you wrap it up. Second being that you only use the bathroom during the nighttime hours. This was to keep the men from awkwardly bumping into her little brother. To make up for the odd rule she always rewarded the men in the bedroom and after Max had fallen asleep for the day, she would make a large breakfast for her visitors too.
The morning after her romp with Robert, the lovely dark haired gentleman with the strong shoulders, the clouds were thick enough that Lily slept in a little later than usual. Robert knew of Lily’s promises for a breakfast but trying to be a gentleman and let Lily sleep he went to the kitchen with intentions of investigating what food there was. But he was caught red handed, breaking one of Lily’s rules, when he walked into the kitchen and found her brother sitting at the table. It had to be her brother, the younger man had a mess of curls just like Lily, and aside from the glasses and darker colored hair he looked like what Robert assumed Lily’s brother would look like.
Max brought another spoonful of Cheerio’s to his mouth, completely enraptured by the latest issue of GamerPRO when a complete stranger walked into his kitchen. Lily’s kitchen. Whichever. It certainly wasn’t the first time one of Lily’s one night stands had gone foraging for food the morning after, but Max wasn’t in the habit of usually being up this early. It was the ill luck of having a morning class that had him attempting to keep himself awake at this hour, and he gave a grunt of acknowledgement toward the man who was so presumptuously helping himself to what was stocked within the cabinets.
“There’s cereal in the cupboard closest to the ‘fridge. Oatmeal on the bottom if that’s what you like.” His words were quick and maybe a little annoyed, but that wasn’t Robert’s fault, simply the early hour.
For a moment Robert didn’t move. He appeared like a deer in the headlights but when Max seemed to not care that Robert had been caught he relaxed slightly and made his way to the cupboards that were indicated. He was inspecting the box of oatmeal as Lily rushed into the kitchen.
She had a robe tied tightly around her long frame and her hair was even more messy than usual. Her eyes were large and only grew larger when she saw that not only had Robert slipped into the kitchen but Max was there eating. Opening and closing her mouth for a few moments she tried to find the words in her near panic. Max wasn’t supposed to know about these men. Well, she was sure he knew but she never wanted him to meet them. “Oh, um, hi Max, what are you doing up so late?”
Early for most people, late for Max since dawn was his bedtime. Whether or not Robert thought this was weird Lily didn’t take notice.
He shook his head at his sister, amused - generally she’d be the one keeping track of schedules, and he was left to simply do as she bid since be could rarely be bothered to do anything he didn’t want to. Shirtless and in boxers (which matched Robert nicely, since he was dressed the same), he put another spoonful of the cereal into his mouth while he considered his options.
“Class, don’cha remember? Sorry, to, uh, be interrupting,” he replied, waving his hand at both her and Robert, though a mischievous grin lit his features and indicated that he wasn’t sorry at all to create this morning awkwardness between his sister and the guy she’d brought home. “By the way, uh...whats your name, the blue Buzz Lightyear toothbrush in the bathroom is mine. I’m getting kind of tired of buying new ones ‘cause of the other guys.”
Lily nearly smacked her forehead with her hand and suppressed a sigh. The other guys. Oh, Max. She gave Max a subtle glare before easing her way into the kitchen, a hand running down Roberts bare side. “Sorry,” Lily said to both Max and Robert. “Forgot that you had an early morning class.”
Lily rubbed at her forehead, feeling the start of a headache and looked to Robert. “I can make you an omelet if you’d like.”
Robert looked between Lily and Max, a nervous type of quiver in his eye before he spoke, “I could always just pick something up on the way out.”
“No, it’s fine. It’ll be just a minute.” She smiled at Robert then moved to get around him, aiming for the fridge and the eggs. She looked at Max again and jerked her head to the side, trying to get him to leave but having low expectations that he would. Still, she could hope. And she could hope all she liked, because Max wasn’t going anywhere at that particular moment. Turning from his cereal and his magazine, he gave his sister’s latest conquest a new minted bit of attention.
“What kind of music are you into? I really dig Hall & Oates. I mean, how can you go wrong with,” and here he picked up a tune, off key as it was, and sang out the chorus of one of his favorite songs, “oooh-ho, here she comes, watch out boy, she’ll chew you up, oooh-ho here she comes, she’s a man eater...”
Lily loudly banged the metal pan onto the oven and didn’t move for a moment. Glancing over her shoulder at Robert she smiled sweetly. “Sorry about that, I can be a little clumsy in the morning until I wake up a little more.” Robert smiled and turned his attention to Max. Lily’s eyebrows raised and she focused on Max as well, sending him dagger like glares from across the room and mouthing Shut. Up.
“Isn’t there some song that is by that chick Nelly Furtado and it’s called Maneater?” Robert asked as he walked to the table and took a seat across from Max. Great, now they were socializing together. Lily rolled her eyes to the ceiling and tried to take nice cleansing breathes that would prevent her from throwing the egg carton at her brothers head.
“Whoa. Whoa. You did not just-” Max wiped at his face with a hand, sighing deeply as though Robert had cut him to the quick. Lily’s actions were noted but ignored, because this guy was just playing too well into Max’s hands - sometimes Max wondered what Lily’s qualifications were regarding guys, but that line of thought usually led to madness and thus Max abandoned it early on. He resettled his gaze on Robert, still feeling absurdly tired and doing his best to not yawn.
“Hall. And. Oates. The 70s. Really? How old are you? You have to at least be ten years older than me - that’s a whole decade! How can you confuse Nelly Furtado for Hall and Oates?!” Max never considered himself anywhere near an audiophile or music buff, but this was just one point where he could needle this guy further.
Robert looked confused and shook his head. “I’m only thirty,” he commented. “How old are you?”
Lily made a loud bang in the kitchen and turned to the both of them. “Ha, funny, the stove seems to be broken. Guess we should go out for breakfast. Max, you should be leaving for class now, right?”
She turned and grinned at the both of them although there was a tenseness to the corners of her eyes that Max could only read. “Come on, Robert, let’s get dressed and we can go get some breakfast.” She began to inch her way towards the bedroom again, trying to beckon her date to follow her without making any sexually suggestive moves or faces in front of her brother.
Max was entirely unwilling to let his sister’s paramour-for-the-night to escape so easily - he rarely showed such things, but his teasing and needling of Lily’s one night stands was the best way he felt he could implement the protectiveness he felt over his sister. He certainly wasn’t one to demand that she stop seeing other people, but the way she’d bring miscellaneous men into their apartment (and yes, it was theirs, not simply Lily’s with the caveat that he live here as long as he attended school - surely his sister would never kick him out) irked him just a little. From time to time he wished she’d just pick one guy, one person he could get used to and maybe even come to like. There was no reason for him to grow any attachment to this revolving door of men.
“Twenty two, and I have more respect for the classics. This is a sad, sad world we live in,” Max dramatically lamented, turning back to his bowl of cereal. As Lily began to drag ‘Robert’ back to the bedroom, he loaded up his spoon with a small amount of cheerios, flinging the tiny projectile at the back of the man’s head.
Lily’s jaw dropped as she saw the cereal hit the back of Robert’s head. She was ready to scold her brother, handle this herself, but Robert had other plans.
“What the fuck was that for?” He snapped as he turned back to Max. Lily’s eyes snapped towards Robert and narrowed. Her brother was being an idiot, sure, but he had no right to say anything. She was fully capable of handling Max herself. “Dude, what the fuck is your problem?”
“Robert!” Lily’s voice clearly held a level of shock to the situation. Before the siblings Robert was puffing up as if ready to have a fight and Lily quickly came further into the kitchen again. No, no way was some guy going to come into her apartment and threaten her brother. “What is your problem? Don’t talk to my brother that way!”
“Yeah! I mean, who’s to say that cereal didn’t suddenly become extraterrestrially animated with an artificial life force and decide to populate the back of your head, or maybe there was some kind of magnetic pull between your skull and the wheatie goodness of my Cheerios?!” Max’s own reply was done as fervently as Robert’s anger, though it was also quite clear in it’s comedy. He couldn’t kill the grin that spread across his face, though he tried; it would smother for a few seconds before erupting again.
Wisely, though, he slipped down from his chair and moved the bowl and its remaining contents to the sink, rolling up his magazine like he was going to swat a fly - or potentially use it in his own defense against Robert, should he decide that more physical reparations were in demand.
“Max, be quiet,” Lily warned as she noticed Robert seem to bulk up again. He glanced at Lily and she eyed him with stern eyes. “I’m sorry my brother behaved that way.”
“He’s fucking twenty one but he acts like he’s twelve,” Robert snapped. “No wonder you let him live with you. Probably can’t wipe his own ass.” He looked at Max with disdain and then back at Lily whose eyebrows had reached as high as they could.
“I think it’s best if you leave, Robert,” Lily replied with a growl to her voice. He hadn’t acted quite like this the night before. He had seemed actually nice, maybe a little full of himself, but she had told herself that it was just confidence. Nothing more. But this was unacceptable. Her voice continued, even and clearly annoyed as she stared Robert directly in the eyes. “You can’t talk about my brother that way.”
“And I said twenty-two,” Max corrected. “If you’re going to insult someone, might want to get your facts straight.” He pointed the rolled magazine in the man’s direction, eyebrows raising in accusation. Despite his confident words, he did pipe down after that, letting Lily take over the situation. It wasn’t often that he had an opportunity for some harmless ribbing of Lily’s one-night-boyfriends, but this was the first time such situations had gotten this out of control.
“Fuck off,” Robert grumbled at Max. But he was loud enough for Lily to hear. With her jaw dropping she shoved Robert towards the apartment door. “Hey,” Robert replied as he lifted his hands up in self defense. “What the hell?”
“Out,” Lily said firmly as she shoved at Robert again. She grabbed the apartment door and opened it, shoving Robert outside and into the hall in his boxers. She slammed the door shut and flicked the lock. Robert immediately began to bang on the door, cursing at her then changing his tune to beg for his clothing, wallet and keys. Lily crossed her arms and waited, letting him rage like an idiot outside the door and allowing herself a moment to feel sorry for herself.
She didn’t want a man in her life, she was happy with what she had, but sometimes it would be nice if the guy was at least half way decent. They all seemed to have something wrong with them. Even the ones she casually dated outside of the apartment complex, the ones she didn’t mention to Max because she had hopes that they might be good enough to wait for, good enough to take her time with. But they always ended up being pushy and rude.
Max watched the scene from within the dining area, his eyes going wide behind his glasses. He’d been a bit shocked from the beginning by Robert’s quick jump to crude language, though by no means was he a stranger to it. He played online games, after all, but there wasn’t a mute button for life, unfortunately. Looking over at his sister, he grinned sheepishly.
“Well, he looks like a keeper,” he joked, and was met with a glare. The grin disappeared completely and he muttered a quick apology, looking truly sorry. He shifted in place, and then moved toward their bedrooms; instead of ducking into his own, he went into Lily’s and gathered up everything foreign, all the stuff that probably belonged to Robert and brought it out to the doorway. “Can we just give him his stuff and tell him to take a hike?” Inwardly, he was proud to have shown his sister what an asshole this guy was, even if his methods were a little immature.
Lily’s shoulder’s relaxed and she dropped her head forward for a moment as she gathered her wits. Then with a deep intake of air she looked her brother in the eye and gave him a nod. “Sounds like a good plan. Although I’d love it if we could just leave him out there in his boxers, I don’t think he’ll go away without his car keys and his wallet. You want to do the honors?” She gave a nod to the pile of clothes in Max’s arm and turned to grab the door knob. She could open the door, he could throw out the clothes, and then she’d slam it in his face again. “Try to aim for his face, okay?”
She pulled back the door, Robert paused in his ranting and looked briefly surprised, Lily gave him a cool smile and held the door back so that Max could throw out his clothing.
Like a pro, Max launched Robert’s belongings into the hall and neatly smacked him in the face with the crotch of his pants, the legs wrapping around his head like tentacles. The rest of his belongings spread out, hitting either various parts of his body or smacking against the far wall only to fall to the floor. Robert struggled with the clothing, his words muffled but certainly holding the quality of anger; Lily, however, gave him no quarter and slammed the door closed and replaced the lock.
“Did you see that? Swish!” Max made a dunking motion with his hands, grinning widely.
Despite her earlier annoyance with her brother, which was still twisting in her stomach gently, Lily couldn’t help but smile at Max. “You’re such a dork,” she muttered and gave him a light smack on his arm. “I know you just ate but why don’t we both go out to breakfast. I can drop you off on your campus afterward.”
She scratched at her hair and wrapped her arms around her still bathrobe covered body. She felt disappointed still and a little embarrassed that her brother had to deal with all of this. She felt guilty as well for putting Max in that position. With a smile that didn’t reach her eyes she continued, “Anyway, you’re much better company than he is.”
He gave another sheepish grin, one hand tugging on the hem of his Ninja Turtles t-shirt. “Look, I’m sorry, I just...” He trailed off, leaving the sentence open ended, unsure if such fodder was appropriate at this juncture. Max decided against approaching that subject, feeling unequipped to talk his sister out of such a lifestyle. Despite having devoured a bowl of cereal, his stomach still growled and he patted it gently.
“Uh, yeah. Breakfast sounds awesome, and I can pay for it. It’s only fair. Lemme go get dressed, and then we can go,” he altered, flashing one last smile before turning to walk to his room.
Lily gave him a small smile. She appreciated the very beginning of his apology and even more so that he was offering to pay. But as she followed her brother, directing herself into her own bedroom to change, she decided that payback was needed. They would go out for breakfast all right, but they’d go to the vegan restaurant a few blocks from Max’s campus. “Wear comfortable pants, you know how the vegan eggs always make you bloat,” Lily said cheerfully as she passed her brother’s door and gave a wink.
