A VISIT
Who: Rylee, then Charlie later
What: Elias decides to pay a visit
Where: The doorway of Charlie's apartment, #103
When: 6:30 p.m.
Warnings: None as of yet

Elias had given considerable thought into his next meeting with Charlie. His intention had been to have her introduce him to the boy who had been with her the night of the blackout, but somewhere along the way, he'd begun to think about her job in night security. It changed things.

The longer he imagined what her job entailed -- and where it drew her -- the more he believed that he needed to do something about it. What's more, she lived on the first floor. Pax struck Elias as a relatively safe apartment complex, but thieves and rapists rarely cared much for what the neighbors of their victims thought. It was possible, given Charlie's job and her choice of apartments, that price had been one of the driving factors in her choice of apartment #103. That was understandable; Elias had also chosen his apartment with price in mind. But he had reasons that were not related to his income. As for Charlie...

He went to the hardware store on her behalf. At first, he had intended only on buying pepper spray. Pepper spray turned into clamps to install on her windows, so that they could only be raised a crack. And then he saw the sporting goods section. A bowie knife and a Louisville slugger both went with Elias when he left. And then he stopped by a novelty store. He left with a pair of black lacquered nun-chucks with silver-adorned handles.

Elias wasn't one for wrapping presents. He had done it for Brigetta and for his mother, but typically presents from Elias came in brown paper bags or white plastic ones. So it was with Charlie's gifts -- with the exception of the nun-chucks, in their wooden box. The box, he tucked under his arm; the bat, he held in the same hand, along with the plastic bag from the hardware store. That left a free hand to knock on Charlie's door, which he had full intention on doing.

Typically, Elias took the stairs down to the ground floor; but tonight, laden as he was, he chose the elevator. When it opened, he saw a face that was relatively familiar. Blond kid, pretty timid from Elias' guess... They'd never met, but Elias had passed him now and again on his way in and out of the building. He gave the kid a nod, and then moved to the opposite side of the elevator, thinking little more of it.

But when he got out of the elevator, the kid followed. Elias already learned that Charlie shared her floor with three other people. Two were women, but the other just as easily could have been this guy.

Except... they just passed the apartment Elias knew was occupied by the man. His lips compressed. His jaw clenched. He slowed his steps and then stopped in front of Charlie's door. And when he turned his head to find the kid standing right by him, he kept his eyes on the boy.

"Can I... help you?" he asked in a gravely monotone. It was a quiet voice, but gravid and stern -- authority dripped from it.

Silence settled in the room as they all three pointedly said nothing. For Elias' part, he was busy thinking through the bits of information Rylee just laid down. It was easier to believe that one had gone mad than to believe that one was seeing visions of a creature responsible for some sort of psychic attack on oneself.

But when more than one person saw the same creature, that belief seemed unreasonable at best. And lately, it was not at all unreasonable to believe in visions. Elias had never been superstitious, but he knew for a fact that he was seeing things that he couldn't see before -- seeing them on a regular basis. They weren't visions, per se. But it was as if he.... were looking through darkness at something happening at the same time in some other part of the world. Yes, it seemed that there were even more possibilities than he was aware of even a few months ago. Every question - even the strangest ones - mattered. Every answer counted.

At length, Elias stood. It was a slow, deliberate sort of movement. "Thank you," he said to Rylee, and meant it. "If you think of anything else -- either of you -- I'd be appreciative. Here, just --"

The business card read, Director, Network Security Development, DynTek. He jotted his apartment number and personal cell phone number on the back of the card, then set it on the couch.

"Anytime," he finished, and his tone indicated that he was still thinking over everything he'd learned. "I'll see myself out."

Giving Jack another playful shake, she released the dog's head and stood, wiping her hands on her jeans. Her eyes had watched Elias leave the business card; she was of a similar opinion as Rylee, she didn't really want to talk about it. Though maybe she should see a shrink, just a check up of sorts, make sure she was doing as well as she'd believed she was. Those thoughts were immediately flushed out of her mind - the only way she'd end up back in any doctor's office was if she was unconscious.

There wasn't much of a distance between her couch and her front door, but for a moment she felt a pang of embarrassment, potentially for being a bad hostess. This emotion confused her, because she would be perfectly happy with Elias gone; she was always perfectly happy once people got the hell out of her apartment. Not to mention all of the strange gifts he had brought her, and the attempt he had made to make her apartment "safe"... There was no reason to feel bad over her reaction. Still, she found herself watching Elias go, and she cleared her throat again as though to catch his attention.

"The stuff." She stopped, suddenly wondering what the hell she was doing. "I'll take good care of it." That was probably as close to a thank you as she'd ever come, and quickly she looked back to Rylee in order to pull herself together.

"Yer drivin' to the movies, unless you wanna ride on my bike. Somethin' tells me you wouldn't like the way I drive."

Rylee gave Elias a nod, knowing he wouldn't be going to the man to tell him any more. He didn't want to remember that night, other than waking up with Charlie beside him, and he didn't intend on lingering over it.

He still had that edge of anxiety until Charlie focused on him and in a rush it disappeared. His eyes lit up considerably, although the worry line was still present, and he shifted on the couch before getting to his feet. "I remember how you drove in High School. I sure as hell am not going to see if you drive the same way on your bike."

He grinned at Charlie, obviously teasing but there was still an edge of seriousness to his words. She knew how cautious of a driver he was. He turned to Elias, swallowing to gather his courage. "Hope you have a good day, Elias." His attention swiftly went back to Charlie and his face softened slightly. "You pick the movie, okay?"
