Advice For A Medium-Sized Load
Who: Charlie & Cat
What: Laundry!
Where: Pax Letale Laundry Room
When: 8/3/2011, 7:03 pm
Warnings: TBA

Pax Letale was a fairly impressive apartment building, and as though that set a standard, its laundry room was made to match. Large, industrial washers lined one wall, stacked in pairs and numbering to ten, which was matched by a similar number and positioning of dryers on the opposite side of the room. A machine near the door offered a variety of detergents and fresheners depending on what one needed for a particular load, and the entire room was kept clean and smelling fresh twenty four hours a day.

Charlie could not care less.

She was carrying a cloth bag of laundry out in front of her, held away from her body as though the thought of touching it made her sick. It wasn't so much the thought of dirty laundry as much as what a few items of clothing inside of the bag were dirty with - and Charlie's expertise in the art of cleaning (or lack thereof) left her entirely mystified toward the series of steps required to return her clothing back to its original state. Her best guess was to just toss it all in a washer and hope for the best.

Picking one out at random that wasn't already stirring a soup of cloth, water and soap, she started to toss the entirety of the bag (which was already twice her size, though that didn't say much since she was so slight) into the mouth of the washer, using only her thumb and forefinger to touch as little of the clothing as possible.

Charlie gave an abrupt laugh, her hand moving out from it's hidey-hole and rubbing up and down the length of her arm. This whole scene certainly felt strange, but at the same time, she didn't lament or wish to be rid of it at all. The random touch that came from Cat felt entirely natural, and Charlie made no move to put more distance between herself and the woman.

"Don't think I'd be one tah ask 'bout that, or help with it, not really," she responded, knowing full well that the 'California lifestyle' had done nothing to change her eating or drinking habits. Charlie didn't much care for either the plasticism of the Barbie-like women, nor the ones who were so gung-ho about not eating animals; it wasn't so much that Cat smoked, but the thought that she didn't neatly fit into either of these boxes either that made Charlie like her more. They were both strangers to this state, to the ideals here.

"And it'd be one'a the few times somebody tol' me I was helpin'," she continued, deprecating herself playfully in an act of bonding. The move to California had been to entirely uproot herself and...well, from there, Charlie hadn't really thought about it, but maybe she was finding more than she could have ever expected to. Though her standards were rarely high to begin with.

Cat grinned. "You do seem like a bit of a troublemaker. But to be honest," she said, leaning toward Charlie conspiratorially, "I rather like that in a girl." She gave her a wink. The affinity she felt for this girl was more than enough to make her friendly, and though she couldn't be sure it was mutual, the kinship she felt with Charlie only grew stronger each time they met, it seemed. After a moment of considering her, she said,

"You should come to my flat for dinner this week. Not to say that I'll cook," she gave her a sly smile, "But I'll certainly arrange for there to be food and wine. You should bring a friend or two; anyone you like. We'll eat, drink, be merry, and lament the bloody awful traffic and healthy living that seems to be the dominant force of nature in this part of the world, God help us."

With a smile, she said, "What do you say?"

Charlie was generally one to shy away from attention, but there was something about Cat that made her feel incredibly pleased about the other woman's approval. Not so much that it was necessary, but certainly desired. It surprised Charlie, a little, how eager she was to instantly accept Cat's invitation, as though to continue to pursue her attention.

"Not really sure when I'd be able to make my schedule work," she started, lamely and somewhat stuntedly. It was almost a canned response; then Charlie rolled her shoulders and shrugged, a wisp of a smile appearing on her face. "Hell, I can always call in sick. Or just not show up." As to the idea of bringing a friend, however, she faltered. Not because she wanted the time with Cat all to herself (though the thought was there) but that she had next to no friends, except for Rylee.

"I guess I could bring Ry..." She stated as though musing, unwilling to admit that she knew virtually no other people in the building.

If Charlie's smile was a wisp, Cat's was equally broad and full.

"Oh, don't miss work on my account; we'll arrange it so you can make it. On whatever day you have off. And yes, you should bring Ry," she said, her smile unabated. "I'd love to meet him. We'll have a little dinner party. It'll be lovely."

Cat was inordinately pleased by this development, and was already considering what should be on the menu.

"When is your next day off? And what do you like to eat?"

Cat's insistence on Charlie's selection of Rylee as a guest made Charlie feel as though she'd passed some sort of test, and the smile on her face grew a little.

"My next day off is next Tuesday. I can let Ry know, I'm sure he doesn't have much goin' on." She was fairly certain that not only did Rylee have little to do after work, but that he might enjoy Cat's company.

"An' food...uh, thai?" She shrugged, giving off the impression that as long as whatever she was eating was covered in some kind of sauce and was mostly edible, she wouldn't complain.

Cat nodded, already mentally planning for the event, and offered Charlie a smile.

"Tuesday is perfect, and so is Thai," she said. "Now I think I'll take a dip in the pool while the laundry runs its course. Care to join me?"

Charlie gave a nod before she even realized she was answering in the affirmative; again she felt like she was being praised for a correct answer, and the invitation to continue having Cat's attention on her made her want to jump excitedly. She managed to suppress the emotion and instead returned the other woman's smile.

"Sure." She pushed off of the counter and led the way (with perhaps a bit of a bounce in her step) out of the laundry room, moving at a simple pace to let Cat match her, for some reason not wanting to move too quickly lest she lose her spotlight.
