Who: Paul and Honey Skye
When: Soon after this
Why: She doesn't believe Paul is really here
Where: Apartment 1005
Rated: Tame

Honey Skye stared at the suspicious note from "Paul" for no longer than two whole minutes. She did not believe for one minute that Paul was here in the building. Xander was playing a joke on her. There was no other explanation...right? He certainly would have mentioned that his dutifully dear friend was living in the same apartment building at some point in their cobnversations- that is, if it was indeed true.

That she didn't recognize the penmanship meant nothing. Xander was famous for his practical jokes and he would have no problem throwing money at someone to jot a silly reply to her inquiry. But still, he was also as equally lazy as he was mischievious and the note had appeared quickly...He would have had to have rushed around and put in a real effort for this message to have arrived in her mailbox so soon.

He might be crafty but he wasn't superhuman.

So, because there could be something to this Paul business, she folded the note back up, tucked it in her pocket, gave herself a once over in the mirror by the door (just to make sure she was presentable), then plucked her key from the hook ( so she wouldn't lock herself out)and made her way down to 1005 to find out if there was any validity to this note in person.

Her arm was raised to appropriate door knocking height and she let an artful thump a-tump tump beckon this Paul impersonator to her call.

Paul wasn't expecting company. He was busy being completely awesome and watching a fascinating documentary on The History Channel entitled 'Little Ice Age: Big Chill.' And no, he did not begin to realize how lame this truly was. It was a better alternative than going out and getting drunk, which is what he really wanted to do.

When he heard the knock he looked up, surprised, and quickly reached for the remote to mute the TV. Who the hell could be coming by? He was pretty sure Moana deemed him too nerdy to associate with, but it could be Vince. Or Roy.

When he opened the door and saw the one, the only, Honey Skye Griffin, he sucked in a breath.

"Skye?"

Wait, he was wearing pants, right? He hadn't come to the door in jus his boxers? A glance downward confirmed that yes, he was appropriately dressed in jeans and a t-shirt.

"Oh, right! Come on in." He stepped back so she could walk inside.

Not even when she was staring Paul in the face did she immediately believe that he was Paul. No. It wasn't possible and it was an outrageous coincidence. She HAD to stare at him and she wasn't shy about it. ( No wonder he might be concerned that he was pantlessly carefree!)

He looked more grown up, there were a few extra wrinkles around those twinkling eyes of his...and that took a moment to get used to. Years had gone by since they'd last been face to face like this and it hit her hard. Maybe she didn't want to believe he was here because she'd been doing such a delightfully prudent job of being cold and distant and Paul wasn't the sort of person you could be cold and distant to.

She'd give it a try though...

There was no questioning relinquishment of his name. As soon as he stepped back to allow her in without so much as a thought, she believed that this indeed was her friend. It didn't make her disbelief that he was here any less substantial though.

"I had to come down and see for myself." She'd explained as she studied him. Glancing at all his parts, maybe making sure that he wasn't some high tech carefully crafted Japenese robot or an actor doing a spot on impersonation. "What are you doing here?"

He shut the door behind her, fidgeting as she studied him, and he eventually just stuffed his hands in his pockets while offering up a small smile. It had been years, a ridiculous number of years, and while Paul had been kept up to date on the roller coaster that was Vince and Honey's relationship, it still wasn't the same as having her here in his apartment. She didn't look like she wanted a hug but he gave her one anyway, a warm squeeze and a kiss on the cheek - normally he wasn't so touchy-feely but he had known her for ages and was comfortable.

"I moved in a few weeks ago. My dad just died, and I..." He shrugged, pulling back slightly. "I figured this building was a good place to go." He wouldn't mention how weird it was, not yet. "Oh, have a seat..." Paul gestured to the living room - his apartment was nice and clean, decorated with cool, calming tones. Blues and greens, and some brown. There were the knickknacks too, from all over the world - the ones brought back by his father during his many world travels while in the Navy. More were in the guest room but Paul had a few interesting pieces in the living room as well.

"Can I get you anything to drink? Or to eat?" He was pretty sure he could whip something up if she was hungry. Or there were Zebra Cakes, the staple of every bachelor diet.

The hug was well received and it seemed to break the ice. She reciprocated by throwing her arms around him and after she was given a kiss hello, Honey Sky returned the favor by giving him a great big lipstick stamp kiss against the apple of his cheek. "It's been far too long." She released him, smiling brightly as she did. She was not too demonstrative a person...but Paul had always been kind to her and she always appreciated that he hadn't assumed anything about her but reserved judgment for himself. She respected that.

His explanation put a slight crinkle in her brow and she touched the upper part of his arm, giving him a comforting squeeze and said softly, "My deepest condolences, Paul." and although she wanted to bring up the fact that this was another strange coincidence (Vincent's father also having recently passed away) she abstained, not being the classless sort. "I am glad to see you." She let go, again severing her physical connection with him and instead took a seat since he'd offered.

"I'd love a glass of water...if it isn't too much trouble." She found herself parched suddenly, probably from the shock of being seeing him, "You do know Xand...Vince is here too right?"

"It has been too long. But you still look great, as usual," he complimented, and at her remark of condolence he nodded slightly. "Thank you." It was a sincere thanks, and he appreciated the gesture. Losing his father so suddenly had been extremely difficult - one could even argue that Paul still wasn't dealing well with it, especially since the heart attack came out of nowhere. The Captain had always been the picture of health and then all of a sudden -

Oh, yes. Drinks. "No trouble at all," he said, going off into the kitchen but still talking, since it was connected to the living room. "I really am glad to see you too though." He chuckled a bit, opening the jug of spring water and pouring some into a glass. "And I saw Vince the other day, actually. We went out to lunch. He hasn't changed much."

Coming back into the living room, he handed Honey the glass of water. For himself he had iced tea, no lemon. "Roy is here too. I just...it's such a coincidence, so many people I know moving here."

"I doubt he'll ever change..."She said, smoothing down her skirt and fiddling with the hem of her skirt as she waited for him to finish getting their refreshments. She crossed her leg at the ankles as pretty as you please when he came back in and she reached for the water when it was offered.

She took in a generous gulp of water but she wish she hadn't. She nearly choked on it when he delivered the news that Roy was in the building too.

"You know..." she started, after she'd recovered, "I had to come down here because I didn't believe you wrote this note." She plucked it out of the pocket of her skirt and held it up, fanning it between two fingers. "I thought Vinny was playing some sort of joke on me. Trying to drudge of the past while we planned for the future."

Paul sat down on the couch, turning to face her. Oops! He hadn't meant to cause a choking scare, but he was CPR certified and would have gladly performed the technique to save Honey's life. But - oh. Whew. False alarm! And while it was true Roy was here, he obviously had been caught up in work - again. Perhaps an intervention was needed. Because if the man was found dead of exhaustion, Paul would probably just throw himself off of the roof at that point.

He smiled a little when he saw the note. "I don't blame you for being cautious. It is really weird. I'd say there's a reason for all of this, but who really knows." That seemed like such bullshit to him though. Paul wasn't very metaphysical. He believed that, for the most part, people controlled their destinies - however, some things were probably meant to happen, and would work themselves out no matter what. For instance, The Epic Relationship. Honey had mentioned her and Vince's future in the 'we' tense and Paul knew that they were never going to officially break up, ever. Because they were meant for each other no matter how many other puzzle pieces they tried to fit in where they didn't belong.

Of course he didn't say that. He liked his head where it was.

"So what have you been up to?" he asked, taking a sip of tea. "Are you still practicing law?"

Another sip of water was had. Her throat felt scratchy after she'd nearly spit up after her couch. Honey wasn't necessarily the metaphysical sort either and after Xander's rant about the electromagnetic waves flowing through here she'd been partially nauseated but all of a sudden she was beginning to feel that there might be something to his unease. Though, she was unwilling to say anything. She wasn't sure how she felt about it and so she said nothing at all.

Instead, she tried enjoying this unexpected meeting and flung herself into the conversation.

"I hope to." There was no other way to put this and she wasn't prone to beating around the bush, "Vinny called me with an oppurtunity and I left everything to take him up on it. Once I have some things squared away, I hope to open up by own law practice...Duey, Cheatum and Howe." She giggled then, but she soon shook her head after she'd had her fill of comedy and finished, "but seriously, this is California. I think I have enough to keep me business."

Another sip of water to clear the conversational palate.

"What about you, Paul?" She was never the sort to ask anything for manners sake, "Are you still searching the sea?"

Paul laughed too, his glass poised halfway to his mouth. "Yeah, it's not like you'd be hurting for work," he agreed. "Especially with Hollywood so close by...only about forty-five minutes? You're set." Perhaps he'd see Honey at Lindsay Lohan's next trial! Or One Night in Paris or whatever her name was. "But that sounds great."

He nodded, biting his lip to keep from going off on an oceanic rant. "To say the least," he admitted. "I've been working at the Ocean Institute at Dana Point. It's been going well, and I love my job. Probably a little too much! How's your family doing?" He knew Honey came from a large brood with many siblings. She had an interesting upbringing - not many girls were farmers and knew about that sort of thing. He always thought that was neat.

Paul kept shooting questions so fast!!... She wanted to comment on his career (which was infinitly more interesting than her family) but she decided to skip a turn and come back to it after she'd answered, "Things are about to get a whole lot better for them." She said this with a detached air.

Honey had allowed a lot of distance to form between her and her family. Maybe it would get better someday but unfortunately she had never felt too regretful about it. She made appearances, remembered birthdays and phoned occasionally but they felt more like an obligation more than a family. Maybe she'd never understood why they couldn't get it together. But, she couldn't deny the appeal of swooping in and rescuing the lot. Maybe the whole world would owe her a favor some day. "They're all healthy." The subject was ended.

"You aren't married? You live here alone." She finally gave his apartment an appropriate once over, noting that there were no female touches that would indicate a woman spent a lot of time here. "I don't believe it. I was sure you'd be the first..."

"Healthy? That's the most important thing," Paul said, sloshing the tea around in his glass. "I'm glad to hear that things are on the up and up for them." And he didn't press it any more - he was good at that, not badgering people. That's what made him an easy person to talk to, or so he hoped.

The marriage inquiry nearly made him choke. Now it was his turn! "Um!" He coughed, turning bright red. "No, I'm not married." The thought almost made him laugh and he would have if he wasn't coughing. Then he got ahold of himself to ask another question. "Why would you think I'd be the first?"

Honey watched the man choke on his tea but it wasn't like he went quiet, pointing at his wind pipe so her concern did not grow. Not that she would have been much good if it had developed into something serious. She didn't do CPR. Top be certified it would have meant touching people that might not particularly appeal to her and she didn't do that either.

But, when it came down to it she couldn'y understand why the questions would be choke inducing at all. Her eyes went squinty for a second after he asked her why she thought he'd be the first. It seemed pretty obvious to Honey Skye...

"You're a sweet guy. I always thought you wanted a family. Someone to come home to after you've gone out diving for the day." She shrugged. Even if she was wrong it didn't effect her any. She swirled the ice cubes around in her glass but did not drink, "I might be wrong. Maybe you're not the catch I thought you were."

Paul blushed a bit at the explanation, rubbing the back of his neck. "I do want a family, and someone to come home to after diving all day," he admitted. "I guess the stars haven't aligned for me yet. Or maybe I'm not the catch you think I am." He smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. Who would want to marry him? All of the issues lurking away in the back of his mind, the anger and frustration he carried and just couldn't let go of? There was sadness too, and remorse, things he kept with him and just didn't have anywhere to express - so the emotions all stayed bottled up inside of him.

"Unless you're offering," he added. "But I doubt that."

Honey didn't know about any darker interior. As far as she was concerned he was...Paul. Xander's friend. Sweet Paul, who would always get her a drink at a party when her own date was over somewhere else, trying to be sneaky with some run of the mill floozy.

She would have bet her life Xander did that sort of stuff just for the game of it - all around- so many different players in his game.

But then again, she wasn't in love with Paul so for all she knew he could have been doing the same to some other girl. Honey didn't think so though...and besides why would she care if he was getting her a drink.

"A man who waits for an offer?" She giggled then. Clear as crystal, it carried merrily between them,"maybe if it was a different time...a different place and I knew then what I know now I would have made you an offer." Her smile did not fade, even as she reached across to set her glass down (on a coaster of course). "but you couldn't have made it too easy for me. You would had to have played hard to get Paul."

He laughed too, sheepishly, but he was just happy to see her laugh, giving a glimpse beyond the ice princess barrier that she often built around herself. But he was a good hammer and chisel, in that regard. "I'm not good at playing hard to get," he shared, as if it was a big secret. "But for you, in a different time, in a different place, I certainly would have tried. But you're happy?" he asked, looking over at her. "Here, I mean? Do you think you will be?"

"I could be." She offered vaguely. "I've only just arrived but anything is possible." That was as good as she would let on. Honey wasn't sure what she had gotten herself into and although she was going to do everything in her power to be happy the universe didn't work that way.

"We should all go to lunch." A quick diversion, "Xander, you and I? What do you say about that?"

"Good. You'll let me know if you need anything." It was a request, a gentle one, because Paul was always loyal and a reliable fall-back for his friends - they were stuck with him for life, essentially.

He nodded, agreeing with the idea of lunch. "That sounds great. I'd love to go. Last time Vince and I went to Medieval Times but we can pick something classier this go-round." And he wouldn't even mind being the third wheel!
