The Advice Books Weren't Working
Who: Rylee & Samuel.
What: Rylee needs some advice
Where: Apartment 707.
When: 7pm
Warnings: None yet.

Rylee had been at Pax for a month and had met Samuel a few weeks before. The man had said if Rylee needed anything he just had to ask and Rylee, after much contemplation that lasted about a week, had gathered up the courage to accept that offering. Still, he stood outside of Samuel's door for a few minutes before he had enough courage to even consider knocking.

When he had first moved into the apartment everything had begun with a strange start. Things had been awkward when he found Charlie in the lobby of the apartment complex but they seemed to work around that strange day. Then there was the black out and Charlie's PTSD kicking in while Rylee suffered a burn that he was now not entirely sure ever existed. Then Charlie taking back her hand when Rylee tried to hold it and Charlie ultimately trying to apologize with a bottle of vodka that left Rylee with a horrible hangover the following day and only hazy memories of what had happened the night before. Things had certainly been weird and all over the place. But waking up after his night of drinking only to find Charlie sleeping on his couch... later followed by Charlie convincing him to set off fireworks on the Fourth of July... it all made him feel more positive. More confident. Maybe their relationship was heading in a better direction. They had gotten past so much in their lives and after fifteen years they were here together. Rylee hoped it was a good sign. He felt like he could try for the next step, although he wasn't entirely sure how to go about that next step without scaring Charlie off.

So, with a slight shake in his hands he knocked on Samuel's door and stood back at ease while he waited nervously to see if his neighbor was home.

Rylee frowned and stared at Samuel for a moment. He was worried, of course, that Samuel would mention something to Charlie, but he also felt horribly ashamed of being worried over such a thing. Something deep within Rylee told him that he could trust this man much more than other people he had met. "Just don't mention anything to Charlie," he said quietly, his face returning to the more embarrassed blush that was common with him. "Please. I'd appreciate it. But if we ever get together you're more than welcome to flaunt that you knew all about this from really early on."

He made a faint laugh, scratching at his head nervously as he shyly looked at Samuel, hoping he hadn't offended him in any way.

"Oh fuck that." With a faint wave of his hand, ice clinking in his glass, Samuel readily dismissed Rylee's newest concern. "That's your business to handle. I don't do gossip." There were, of course, exceptions to this rule, not all of them tied to the carrying out of his work-related duties: There were tales enough Samuel might have thought worth retelling, but few involved consenting, unmarried parties engaging in relatively traditional courtship. This, he thought, was far more Lia's bag than his, and so far he had heard little that would even cause him to bring it to her attention alone.

"But." He paused, taking a lengthy sip of his whiskey, pointing to Rylee with an outstretched index finger. "I catch you two out in public and you're actin' all weird, pussy whipped, or otherwise sketchy, I'll call you out then and there." A broad and oddly predatory grin split his face. "That's what friends are for, y'know."

Rylee immediately relaxed, sighing with relief and going to drink more of the whisky. It had stopped burning while going down awhile ago. He smiled at Samuel until the man pointed at Rylee and he became still, listening to Samuel once more.

Quickly a flush of color lit up on his cheeks and Rylee let out a laugh. "I'll make sure you don't catch us together then," he joked... sort of. He tried to focus on Samuel until he squeezed his eyes shut. He probably shouldn't have drank so much whisky so quickly. He had never been a drinker and was always a light weight, this was clear right now. Opening his eyes once more he could see Samuel clearly again.

"You gave me a lot of good advice, Samuel. Thank you so much. I... I think I'll try to leave crumbs for my little bird, just like you said." He gave a tipsy nod of his head and smiled like a proud child.

"Smart move, kiddo," he said, returning the nod with a more sober one of his own. Though the moniker was not a literal fit - given Rylee's stated service and appearances alone, Samuel felt confident their age difference could not be significant - it seemed to fit on some deeper level. Samuel could not have said precisely when he began feeling a sort of bond with Rylee, or why its nature felt more paternal than fraternal in origin. But regardless of whether he overtly recognized or addressed it, it felt comfortably true.

"Lemme know how it goes. You've got my curiosity piqued." He grinned, a clipped laugh escaping him. "I obviously think my advice is awesome and will work wonders for you, like it's always worked for me. You just listen to what I told ya and you're gonna be just fine."

Rylee brightened at Samuel's approval. Sitting up a little straighter and smiling. He felt... happy, proud... which was strange but Rylee quickly drowned any consideration of how odd it was with the remainder of his whiskey.

"I'll remember it, Samuel," Rylee replied, the grin still on his face. He got to his feet, swaying slightly, and offered the empty glass to Samuel. How was it that every time he hung out with someone since moving, most times he ended up tipsy or drunk by the end of the conversation? "I'll definitely let you know what's happening. Just don't get too excited if it doesn't happen right away. She is a nervous bird, after all."

Samuel took the glass from his hand, tipping it upside down over the carpet, watching for any sign of an errant drip. When none fell, he laughed aloud, feeling a strange sense of pride at Rylee's apparent accomplishment. "Well done," he murmured. Leaning up, he set the glass aside, setting his alongside it after one last, lengthy sip. He reached for the PlayStation controller long ago set aside, looking back up to Rylee as he returned to his place on the sofa. "Any job worth doing is worth doing right," he said. "As long as you're makin' progress I won't bust your balls too much. I'm glad I could help."

"Well, I'll leave you to what you were doing," Rylee said as he shoved his hands into his jean pockets. "I'll show myself out but thanks again. It's been nice seeing you and if you ever need anythin', remember I'm just across the hall."

He took a few steps towards the door, swaying slightly, and gave Samuel a wave without turning around. "I promise I'll let ya know how it goes. Wish me luck!"

As if Rylee would see it, Samuel gave him a quick wave over one shoulder, distracted, himself, by the twin sirens of whiskey and television. No further answer was required - after all, given his tried and true method, luck had precious little to do with it.
