Day Late, Dollar Short
Who: Karin, Kami
What: Kami finally gives up on the OTC tests, sucks it up, and goes to the doctor. Poor Karin. That is not how she should meet her fellow residents.
Where: The sanitary sanctuary of the hospital.
When: January 18th
Warnings: None yet!

Relax, Kami told herself firmly as she walked down the brightly lit hospital hall towards the exit. The scent of sanitizing cleaning solutions was sharp in her nose and the glare off the gleaming tiles hurt her eyes. Ducking her head, she wrapped her arms more tightly around her torso and she felt her purse swing to bump her hip at the motion. Relax, she repeated. You're not pregnant. There's no bun in the oven. You aren't going to have to have any more awkward conversations or, God, do paternity testing to see if it was going to be Papa Shae or Daddy Jack.

Somehow, though, the knowledge of a bullet dodged did not unravel the knot deep in her stomach. She still felt sick, shakey and weak. Not herself at all.

Maybe it was the other things the doctor had to say. Kami swallowed hard. She could not cry in public. She would not cry in public. No matter what.

She was not pregnant, yes, but there was something else wrong inside. No period since October, the look on the doctor's face as discussed possible situations with her... But there was no pain and, though he made an appointment for some additional tests and x-rays, she knew he was doing it only because his professional pride was at risk. After all, what doctor would want to admit to the first words that had left his mouth as the examination progressed?

Kami shuddered and bit down hard on her lower lip. She had to get out of the hospital and get home. She needed to text the boys and... She didn't know what came after "and then." She was afraid to think about what came after that. Picking up her pace and keeping her eyes low, she rounded the corner and made for the wide double doors, beyond which lay the comfort of her car and the safety of her little apartment.

Kami looked at the slip in her hands, expression strangely caught between shame and hope. Delaying her response, she folded it carefully and tucked it into the pocket of her jeans. Then she looked up to meet Karin's eyes again. There was an instant of hesitation but her natural impulses overrode both manners and current mindset; purse banging at her hip, Kami stepped forward to throw her arms around Karin for a brief, grateful hug. Her head ducked, a faint pink high on her cheeks, and her mouth formed a sheepish grin as she pulled back again. "Thank you," she murmured. "I'll keep that in mind. I promise I won't bother you but... Thank you."

Lifting her chin again, she tilted her head to one side so Karin could better see the slight smile now lingering. "But it'll be fine," she insisted. "Better to know than not know and all that. You'll see. Next time you see me, it'll be back at the apartments and no more weirdness. Promise."

Karin nodded, her own smile turning a bit brighter. "I hope that's the case." She reached up, tucking a stray lock of hair behind one ear. Her eyes flicked away, fixing on some middle distance, unwilling to stare and give the girl any further cause to blush. When she looked back up she looked to Kami from beneath thick lashes, treading cautiously as their brief moment of connection wound to a close. "You take care of yourself, Kami. I'll see you around."

"Oh, definitely." Kami brought her hand to rest over the pocket on her purse that contained her cell phone as she gave a warm nod. "And, like I said, it'll be different next time. You'll see." Kami offered another brave smile but this one flickered with echoes of what must have been her natural sparkle, faded but there. Then she lifted her hand in a little wave and slipped past Karin, fast disappearing down the bright hallway. Just like that... She was gone and Karin was left with her own hints and hypotheses.

(done?)
