Who: OPEN
What: Pax Letale Halloween Bash 2010!
Where: The Empty Grave
When: 6:30-9 p.m.
Warnings: Likely any and all. Enter at your own risk.
Notes: This is the party post for all Pax residents and guests in attendance, right up to the moment of transformation. Use your subject line to denote your character's location (i.e. 'By the door,' 'at the bar,' 'on the dance floor,' 'in a coat closet.')

The air in Pax Letale crackled with possibility all day Sunday. All week, excited chatter had filled the hallway and the forums; costumes had been carried in and out; speculation on what the party would entail were whispered. By Sunday, the energy surrounding the event held so much promise that it hardly seemed like just a Halloween party anymore; it was something more, and that sense was nearly kinetic.

The main ballroom in the haunted mansion that was The Empty Grave was expansive, but guests had already begun to arrive. When they entered, they found lush opulence withered and faded; grandeur, but with an eerie pall over it. It was perfect for Halloween - dark, ghostly, with a twisted Victorian edge to it. The bar was fully stocked, trays of h'ors d'oeuvres passed around and more substantial fare offered on ornate platters along one wall. A DJ was already spinning a mix of music that somehow managed to fit the theme and appeal to the eclectic demographic he was serving, and attractive (if ghastly) characters added flavor to the already colorful room.

The night had begun.

Some people just had a natural sense of timing.

As if taking his cue from Naea's "assholes" comment, Jack materialized through the crowd and approached the snack table where she and Kami were talking. His attention, however, was only on Kami. And pretty intently, too; his blue eyes nearly glowed from beneath the brim of his gangster's fedora, his expression and body language radiating determination.

The closer he got, though, the more evident it became that he'd had a pretty rough evening so far. Which, in truth, he had: between several attempts to get close to Kami, he'd drunk rather a lot of whatever they were serving at the open bar, made out with a hot girl who turned out to be a guy, very nearly made out with Shae, and bemoaned his situation with whomever was within earshot. He looked about as half-dead as his bullet-riddled costume.

Jack all but ignored Naea, only acknowledging her with a nod before turning to the object of his quest. "Kami." His voice was ragged from too much whiskey and too many cigarettes. Taking a breath to maintain his composure, he removed his hat and looked at her squarely, pleadingly. "May I please have the honor of dancing with you on your birthday?"

The expressions that sleeted over Kami's pretty face were hard to pinpoint, especially after innumerable shots and what-have-you, but Naea could clearly see a growing icy steel in her friend's backbone as her posture increased. Lifting her chin slightly, Kami regarded Jack with an unnerving coolness. Before that had settled, though, someone more sober would have recognized a trace of panic and pain, a strange sort of heartbreak given the disgust that now curled her lips. "Jack," she answered quietly. "I was kind of in the middle of a conversation here."

At that comment, however, she glanced at Naea and bit her lower lip. One quick look reminded her of the other woman's long day and she thought of the words just before Jack's appearance. Men are assholes, Naea had all but snapped. Her jaw tensing a bit, Kami turned back to eye Jack. Case in point, she thought. Naea didn't need this. If she refused, would he next hassle Naea? He wasn't going to give up. She knew his persistence. After all, hadn't he spent five months working her onto his playlist?

Blindly, Kami reached out to squeeze Naea's free hand. Then she took a step towards Jack. "One dance," she answered tightly. "Since you're not going to let this go." She looked over her shoulder and offered Naea a weak, apologetic smile. "I'm sorry, hon. I'll be back, okay? It's just this one."

Kami looked far from enthralled with the current situation once the zoot-suit had arrived that she thought she might have passed in the lobby one day. Whoever he was, drunk wasn't the term Naea might have used right about here.

Pulling half of a smile out of who knows where, she shrugged and along with it came a mild brushing of her wings at her back. "It's all right. The food doesn't say much, except to my growling." Much as Linnaea felt the need to say something to the jackass, she kept to herself and popped another cube of pepper jack cheese into her mouth and chased it with a water cracker. "Least you get a dance out of tonight." She didn't know the situation between them and it was likely best she didn't right now.

Her mind began to wander. When was the last time she'd danced with a boy? Had she ever? Did David take her? No, that wasn't his thing...

Finally. Finally. A smile that was somewhere between relieved and elated crossed Jack's face. Now he could finally just talk to Kami, try to atone for what he'd done to deserve her hatred and anger. Try to prove he wasn't the jerk she believed he was. Try to win her back into his life.

"Thank you, Kami," he managed. "I promise I'll let it go after this. I promise." Putting his hat back on, he nodded once more to the other girl by way of apology, then gingerly took Kami's hand and led her out onto the dancefloor.

This was his only shot at atonement. He was going to make it a good one.

Naea watched them walk off, much as Kami's enthusiasm was naught. She sighed heavily and looked down at her festive paper plate of olives, carrots and cheese cubes. Yeah. It was time to go home.

She bit her lip and attempted a wave through the mingling people. That... just wasn't going to work. She would have to ask her friend about things later on. Food and sleep were probably best right now--she wasn't much up for mingling and pretty much everyone was occupied. If she felt better, she might. Linnaea just felt, well...lonely. Like someone who should have been here wasn't.

Throwing a napkin over her food, the fairy-girl began her journey back to her apartment. Parties were overrated, weren't they.
