Who: OPEN
What: Pax Letale Halloween Bash 2010!
Where: The Empty Grave
When: 6:30-9 p.m.
Warnings: Likely any and all. Enter at your own risk.
Notes: This is the party post for all Pax residents and guests in attendance, right up to the moment of transformation. Use your subject line to denote your character's location (i.e. 'By the door,' 'at the bar,' 'on the dance floor,' 'in a coat closet.')

The air in Pax Letale crackled with possibility all day Sunday. All week, excited chatter had filled the hallway and the forums; costumes had been carried in and out; speculation on what the party would entail were whispered. By Sunday, the energy surrounding the event held so much promise that it hardly seemed like just a Halloween party anymore; it was something more, and that sense was nearly kinetic.

The main ballroom in the haunted mansion that was The Empty Grave was expansive, but guests had already begun to arrive. When they entered, they found lush opulence withered and faded; grandeur, but with an eerie pall over it. It was perfect for Halloween - dark, ghostly, with a twisted Victorian edge to it. The bar was fully stocked, trays of h'ors d'oeuvres passed around and more substantial fare offered on ornate platters along one wall. A DJ was already spinning a mix of music that somehow managed to fit the theme and appeal to the eclectic demographic he was serving, and attractive (if ghastly) characters added flavor to the already colorful room.

The night had begun.

Hiding by the food - OTA

Dorcas didn't really want to be here but multiple sources had been persuasive. Her boss, who was flitting through the crowd looking for some chick to take home, had even threatened to fire her if she didn't get out and socialize. So she had gotten out to socialize. The whole steampunk thing had probably been a bad idea though. She would have to spend the evening explaining what she was and the whole concept of steampunk...

Great way not to draw attention. But at least she wasn't baring skin or trying to be extra sexy or anything like that. At least not in her opinion. This was comfortable. This was... out of her closet and an outfit she occasionally wore to work. No one could really know that though. She hadn't worn it in ages. She picked up one of the little treat thingies that looked very much like an eyeball and turned it around on its little toothpick, half glaring at it. "They never tell you what these things really are," she said aloud but mostly to herself.

Charlie couldn't get the thought out of her head that it had been a stupid idea to come to this party. She'd been sitting in her apartment, batting the idea around of whether she should just call work and see if they needed an extra hand tonight; but the lure of free booze and food had eventually gotten her to attend. Maybe she'd just hang out for an hour or so and then leave. In the semi-spirit of the event, she'd thrown on a set of devil's horns, nothing terribly elaborate and Charlie had never been into makeup.

She made her way over to the food area, trying to avoid anyone who she might know or who might know her, and of course ran into what looked like Dorcas dressed up as a heater. Or at least wearing parts of a heater. Charlie didn't really understand what the other woman was going for, but, hey, it was Halloween. Everyone let their freak flags fly on this night of the year. Grabbing a paper plate from one side of the table, she started to casually fill it with the food laid out.

"C'mon, don't be a wuss," she responded to Dorcas' muttered comment. Charlie plucked one of the impaled eyeballs from the plate and popped it into her mouth. "S'like a meatball. Not bad," she explained around a mouthfull of food. Charlie, ladylike? Hilarious.

"So...what are you? Did you dismember your vaccuum cleaner or something?"

And of course the one person that she really, really did not want to run into found her. That was just her fucking luck. Really. Perfect. She put the "eyeball" back down and started perusing the other platters for something that she actually recognized as food. "I don't eat something if I don't know what it is," she answered tartly. Well now, someone was getting a wee bit of an attitude wasn't she?

Ah, a finger. Well actually it was a bit of hotdog in a croissant. Whatever. She picked that up and nibbled on the bready part. Dorcas sighed and shifted a little uncomfortable, "I couldn't think of a costume so I just went for genre and picked steampunk." Licking her lips she ballsed up a little, "What do you care? I can't believe you're even talking to me..." Like she was some how beneath Charlie's social circle or some bullshit.

Charlie found Dorcas' attitude to be amusing, especially when compared to their first meeting. Maybe coming to this party was a good idea after all - she'd get a ton more entertainment out of antagonizing some of her fellow Pax residents. Too bad there weren't any jars of organs around anywhere, although on second thought, that was probably a good thing. Considering what had happened after the jar of guts, the less, the better.

"Maybe you're just my new favorite chew toy." And I don't really know anyone else at this party, but Charlie would shoot herself in the head before she admitted to anything of that nature. Of course there was Samuel, but the fact that he was a cop still nagged at the back of her mind, even though they'd started getting along well enough.

Besides knowing Dorcas, there was that comfortable familiarity that she couldn't shake - she might not have known it consciously, but the pink-haired woman was one of several that she had felt drawn towards. The pull towards Samuel and Dorcas was the strongest, though whether that was because she knew them on a name-level she wasn't terribly sure about. There was a red-wighaired woman not too far off (talking to Jack, of course) who seemed slightly familiar - thoughts of the golden apple came back - but Charlie hadn't had any first introductions with her and wasn't in the habit of introducing herself.

"Besides, you seem like you could use some toughening up. Look, you're already growing a pair just by talking to me."

Dorcas closed her eyes, pressing her lips together for a moment. Chew toy. Great. Really fucking great. Because she totally needed to be that again. She was quiet for a moment, just eating croissant bread off the hotdog bit. Finally, she said in a very quiet voice, "I don't want to be a chew toy. It's not like this is high school." That was about as much protest as she could manage.

It was likely that strange comfort that let her speak her mind to Charlie. That stopped her from stuttering... And there was the memory that they shared that deep moment of pure insanity... She didn't look at anyone else around the party as far as she knew, didn't know anyone else other than her boss. "No I'm not. It's just you. And the... thing. It doesn't matter," Dorcas couldn't explain it - not really. She shoved the rest of the hotdog finger thing in her mouth.

Of course this was like high school, or at least the fabricated one that Charlie was familiar with through shows she'd managed to catch pieces of on the TV in prison. She herself had dropped out before even really finishing grade school, if one could call her continuous failures grades of any sort. And then Dorcas brought up the...stuff that had happened before. Sure, Charlie could still feel that...thing lurking in the back of her mind, but she was doing her best to deny its existence. The strange thing was that it was both soothed and excited by Dorcas' presence.

"Yeah, I get you." Probably better than Dorcas or she could explain, if it could be explained. "It's...it's still there for me, too. At least you weren't the one with blood everywhere, huh?" A pitiable excuse for comfort, Charlie was. She popped some pretzels in her mouth. "I'm just glad that shit is gone. Fucktastic redecoration if you ask me." Which no one had, but that didn't matter anyway.

Sometimes, Dorcas wished she had dropped out but then she knew she wouldn't be in the job that she was. Sure it was menial work and didn't really require a degree but the experiences there had helped her... Sort of. Mostly they had ruined her but she wasn't about to admit that out loud. School and her family had been her particular prison. Twenty years of semi-solitary confinement.

She frowned a little, not picking up anything else off the table but just sort of staring at it like it was there and it wasn't. "I didn't need blood everywhere... Instead, I just have to spend every day wondering if maybe I'm actually schizophrenic and you're a sociopath and maybe we're destined to become the world's best killing duo." Some woman that was passing by gave them a funny look. Dorcas's frown deepened and she said to the woman, "Yeah, I said it! Keep looking and you're first." The woman scurried off. Ah, Halloween. It let her be a little more confident than she actually was. Charlie helped. Charlie was a shield, back-up, family. Something. She didn't know.

Shoveling more pretzels in her mouth (this was probably only the third semi-real meal she'd had all week; Charlie and groceries? You must be joking), she half-listened to Dorcas' complaints, a brow spiking at the potential Thelma and Louise duo Dorcas was comparing them to.

Seriously? Charlie totally didn't need that on her rap sheet, and she would have said so outloud too, except for the fact that she had a mouthful of food. Enough that anything that somewhat resembled words would not after passing through chewed up pretzels. She finished chewing and swallowed.

But by then, Dorcas was chewing out some random passerby, which amused Charlie to no end. "Whoa there, Cujo. I can't believe I'm saying this, but chill out. The night's just getting started." And she had no idea that she was being almost psychic with that little tidbit.

"Actually, don't listen to me, that was fucking hilarious. I'll just stand here and watch, participation's never really been my thing," she rescinded, going over the food with a somewhat pickier eye. Participation had, in fact, always been her thing, but right now she had to sit out any kind of threats. And she was, mostly. Hey, she hadn't hit anyone yet (knock on wood).

Well at least Charlie didn't disgrace herself my talking around pretzels and spitting them around the table disgustingly. Dorcas could appreciate that much. Or at least she would have if she were paying one lick of attention which she wasn't. She pointed a threatening finger at Charlie, "Don't... Just don't. I wouldn't even be here if my boss hadn't threatened to fire me for not socializing which I don't even think he can do legally..."

She shook her head and started down the table looking for something that was more edible than this Halloween themed fair. Alright, she loved Halloween, really. But Charlie's presence was making her cranky. Why was there nothing resembling real food? Oh, wait. Oo, cookies. They looked like little tombstones but they were cookies nonetheless so she picked up one of those. "Just wanna go back to my apartment and watch scary movies," she muttered more to herself than anyone else, "stupid needing money to live thing."

She made a mock-innocent face at Dorcas before letting it dissolve back into its previous amused expression. She? Do something? Never.

"Fuck 'im," which was easy to say; Charlie had never been big on people telling her what to do, even if she was pulling down a paycheck. She knew she wasn't really one to talk, because if she screwed over her current job, she risked screwing up her parole. The whining was starting to irk her a little, breaking up the amusement she'd been feeling prior. Readjusting her horns (the headband was digging into her skull a little), she picked up a napkin and used it to clean her hands, leaving the crumpled ball on the table for someone else to deal with.

"'Course, you could always just whine about it. That fixes everything," she gave one last comment to the situation as she looked longingly towards the bar. Yeah, that'd turn the night around.

Dorcas just shook her head a little. Yeah, no, that wasn't going to happen. She needed this job; needed whatever kindness he could provide or else she'd be living in some poor house totally useless. "I'll stop whining when you stop being a bitch and can give good advice." Was that an oh snap moment? She didn't know. She hoped it was. Taking a handful of what appeared to be cheap, shitty candy, she started away from the food table and towards a little table in a corner that seemed to be quite unoccupied. Hopefully Charlie would go for the bar instead of following her.

Charlie rolled her eyes, now fully annoyed with Dorcas' attitude. A moment ago it proved amusing enough, but it had worn thin. Inwardly, she was surprised at the comments the pink-haired woman had suddenly had the balls to bring up - but Charlie wasn't good at being anything other than a bitch, so there was no help in that department. Hell, no one ever asked for her advice before anyway, and it wasn't something she was used to or good at.

So instead of replying, Charlie stalked off to the bar, intent on carrying on a conversation with a vodka or whiskey bottle, something that would certainly prove more mind-numbing than anything else at this forsaken party.
