Who: Shae and OPEN TO ALL
What: PAINTBALL WARS! (Then Bottoms Up Tavern in a separate thread)
Where: Outdoor paintball venue somewhere close to Anaheim
When: Oct 8, beginning around 5PM
Warnings: Headshots, Ramping and Overkill, oh my!
Notes: Separate character interactions should take place in sub-threads to the original post- be sure to include the names of the characters in the subject headings (ex. Samuel and OPEN, Charlie and Ren)

Shae exhaled a plume of smoke through his nose and adjusted his neon orange armband for the third time in as many minutes. He'd arrived early at the venue to make sure all the arrangements had been made and appropriate fees paid, and now he was leaning against the wall of a large concrete bunker right at the mouth of the playing field. He was really starting to dig the whole apocalyptic theme of this particular field, and he'd already spotted a few potential hiding spots to occupy once the game had officially started.

All he needed now were the players.

The clerk at the counter had been given very specific instructions for anyone arriving from Pax Letale: he was to verify their attendance, issue them the appropriate equipment and safety gear, and make sure they were escorted to the proper field, where Shae currently awaited their arrival. His own attire consisted of a neon orange vest to match both of his armbands- hardly his favorite color, but a necessary signifier that he would be the target in the first game of the evening.

He'd just lifted the cigarette to his lips for another drag when he heard the sound of footsteps, and he smiled amiably at the approaching figure.

Time to play.

RULES FOR GAMEPLAY: All course rules and regulations will be explained to the collective group by a venue official. The first game variation they'll be playing can be found here, so PLEASE READ!

Charlie had arrived on her bike not five minutes before - finding the location hadn't been difficult, though she'd still gotten there a little early if only to not be counted as the last one to the party. She wasn't particularly looking forward to meeting the other residents of the apartment building, but she was definitely excited about the prospect of getting to shoot some poor sap in one of the more tender areas. The enticing lure of violence, even if it was somewhat safe violence, put a small smile on her face. Besides, she hadn't done much between work and trying to find a way to deal with the current strangeness of the building, she figured she had some anxiety to work off.

The kickstand in place and bike locked up, helmet under her arm, she headed towards a figure smoking not too distantly away. She was dressed as she usually was, though she opted to switch her jeans for loose fitting pants; as she got closer, she noted that the smoker was bright orange. Walking target, her mind thought, wondering why they would wear such an obvious and eye-catching color. "Hey...this is for the Pax Letale paintball game, right?" She reached the man, trying not to laugh at the ridiculous outfit.

Ah, he could practically feel the amusement rolling off the woman as she glanced over his outfit. So it was a little unconventional (and probably counterintuitive) for a paintball game, but he had a legitimate reason. Really, he did.

"Mmm," he agreed around the cigarette in his mouth, extending a hand to the woman in greeting before plucking the stick from between his lips. "'Dat's da idea, ma cher," he said with a grin, openly giving her the once-over. "You' da first one here so fah, but you migh' wanna grab yo' gear from da equipmen' countuh befo' we git started...less you plan on usin' yo' han's instead."

He tossed his cigarette butt onto the dirt and ground it out with his heel. "Evah play paintball befo'?"

Damn that was an accent if she had ever heard one. She took the hand when it was offered, mostly because she was already in a good mood - usually she wasn't for the touchy-feely, but she was getting to shoot people and it wasn't going to get her arrested. She disregarded the once-over, used to such attention and while not entirely unwelcome to it, she was far more excited about the paintball. Her hand went to her bike helmet, letting it hang from her fingertips.

"No, my hands have other uses - right now, they're itching to wrap around a paintball gun," she replied, unable to keep the tease out of her voice. "And no, though it wouldn't be the first time I've used a gun." TJ would take her to the shooting range every now and again, but she'd never actually fired on another person. That was probably good, since it was one less thing the prosecution could hold against her. "You do this often? You were the one to put out the announcement and all."

Shae's eyebrows arched at her response. Well, he was impressed. Not because she was a woman who obviously knew how to handle a gun- hell, his Maman had taught him to shoot when he was six!- but because she seemed so excited about it. And he'd thought HE had an itchy trigger finger.

"Jes' a few times," he admitted, eyes catching the movement as she adjusted her grip on the helmet. "T'ought it migh' be good stress relief, 'dough...but remin' me not to piss you off." He winked and then gestured at her hand. "What you ride?"

It'd been awhile since Charlie had been able to participate in anything even bordering on the outside of social niceties, and, hey, it was putting her in a good mood. The smile cracked teeth for a moment when he mentioned about not pissing her off, a little devious in intent though not consciously so. "Yeah, you could say I could use a little stress relief."

She lifted the helmet a little so he could see the logo stenciled on the back. "Yamaha Star model, a cruiser. Not really built for speed, just for the ride," she replied; talking about the bike was definitely a way to get on Charlie's good side. She was pretty proud of her baby, though it wasn't nearly as good as the bike she'd had before she'd been arrested, but that was long gone. Given time, she'd be able to soup up the parts to her own liking. "You ride?"

"Not anymo'," he said, a touch of wistfulness in his voice. It had been years since he'd had to sell his bike- well before he'd gotten the Firebird- but he'd been pretty attached to the machine. "Used ta have a '95 Hahley Softail, but...hadda pay da bills. Still gotta picture in mah wallet." The last bit was tongue-in-cheek...mostly.

"Yeah, you right," he said, reaching out to touch the slick surface of the helmet as he searched his mind for the possible identity of his new companion. If he recalled correctly, there were one or two residents that had responded who might fit the profile. "'Da ride was always mah favorite paht...still is." He returned her mischievous grin, though his most definitely WAS intentional. "But sometimes da speed helps."

"You mus' be...701?" What the hell, he'd hazard a guess. "Charlie Fairica, is dat right?" Thank you, internet.

She made a yummy sound - a slow mmmm - at the mention of the Harley. The man had good taste, she could give him that much. The mention of a picture cracked another smile on her face, a quirk of true amusement, and she gave a nod. "That's a shame."

A brow lifted at the next bit, turning the smile into a smirk. He was definitely catching her interest; today was turning out to be a very good day. Probably the best she'd had since she'd moved into Pax Letale. "Yeah, I like speed, but sometimes it's not all about getting there as fast as you can. I know I like a good, long ride every now and again."

"On the nose," she acquiesced, the helmet swinging from her fingertips like a child with a bouncy ball. "Someone been saying nasty things about the chick with the motorcycle?"

Before Shae could answer, their budding conversation met an interruption in the form of a petite bundle of energy bouncing across the field towards them both. Dark hair pulled back in a high ponytail and dressed in Shae-suggested layers and beat-up Keds, Kami beamed brightly as she approached. One hand clutched gun and gear clearly just liberated from the main building while the other lifted to wave. "Hello!" she called cheerfully. The volume hinted at a distance but, in reality, she reached their side within moments.

She paused to deliver a more direct smile at Charlie before stepping to Shae's side. With an expert bounce, she went up onto the balls of her feet and stretched to deliver a friendly-sweet little kiss just off the corner of his mouth. "Hey, sugar," she murmured. "I left the heels in my car for later."

Returning to a proper standing position, Kami swung her handful of equipment to brace behind one shoulder and extended her other hand to Charlie. "Kami from 607. Pleased to meet you!" Her smile of welcome practically threw off sparks.

Ohhhhh, did he have an answer for that. His eyes said as much as they raked over Charlie's form again appreciatively, and he briefly wondered if she was an aggressive rider. He'd almost be willing to bet on it.

The words stilled on his lips, however, at Kami's unexpected appearance, and he pulled away from the other woman enough to accept the sudden kiss without seeming too awkward. Kami was practically glowing with infectious enthusiasm, and his smile was genuine as he let his hand momentarily fall to the small of her back.

"'Datta be a sight, ma cher," he said with a wink, recovering smoothly and trying to prevent his mojo from dying a very sudden death. He looked back to Charlie with a barely perceptible shrug and a wiggle of the eyebrows that seemed to say, Later, definitely later.

What the flashed through her mind at the woman's sudden appearance - mainly the fact that she seemed like she might implode at any moment. Her face expressed such surprise for a moment before it leveled into a stoicism that wasn't terribly pleased about that little kiss, as little as it was. Charlie was used to a little competition, but it probably wasn't a good idea to start shit right here, right now. At least, not until they hit the paintball field. She caught his look, returned a raised eyebrow and a smirk, wondering just how much of a player this guy was.

"Charlie, 701." This woman was a firecracker embodied, though mainly the good aspects thus far. Charlie took a step back from the suddenly enthusiastic atmosphere. "You know, I think I'll go grab my equipment. Don't start without me," she stated, the last bit meant more for Shae in a response to their killed innuendo. She turned on her motorcycle booted heel and walked off to the main building, bike helmet swinging freely.

((Charlie will return when another person arrives...? Something like that. Feel free to continue the convo w/o her!))

Kami blinked after the retreating woman, thought about calling after her, but shrugged in the end and turned back to Shae. "I hope she comes back soon," she announced and, to his surprise, there was only honest hope in her voice. Maybe a touch of regret at the abrupt loss of a new face, too. "I wonder how she's handling her floor's changes. I think... She said the seventh, right? That one went all Beowulf."

She glanced up at Shae's expression as if to check his sanity at the mention of Pax's redecoration scheme; the first night they met, he had been decidedly uneasy about it. Not seeing the whites of his eyes, Kami grinned in relief and reached out to hook a finger under one of the edges of his neon vest. "This, by the way, is so totally not your color."

After fetching and hastily donning his equipment, Samuel needed only the briefest glimpse at the field's entrance to know precisely where he was headed. A lanky man he assumed was their number nine-oh-seven-dwelling ringleader stood there, attracting some level of attention from Charlie and another young woman. Samuel smirked at Charlie's sudden departure, noting the clear huff in which she left; he made a note to bring this up at a later date, preferably when she would not have a weapon close at hand.

"Evening," he said, drawing up alongside them. He flashed a bright grin in Kami's direction, nodding a genteel greeting. Its effect was somewhat dampened by the paintball gun he held with potentially distressing familiarity. His mask dangled loosely from the fingers of his free hand. "Ma'am. Samuel, seven-oh-seven. Good to meet you." He glanced to Shae, his smile taking on a very different cast. "You, too, target. When do we get to start lighting you up?"

The equipment for this excursion was something of a mystery to Alexandria, but thankfully, the man behind the counter was helpful in getting her set up. She walked into the field feeling much more reticent than she had when she'd agreed to this; in fact, she almost turned around at least three times. When she arrived on the scene, she saw Shae, though he seemed closely engaged with a small, pretty woman she didn't recognize. In fact, she didn't recognize anyone here, and not for the first time, she wished she could have convinced Adam to come along. Of course, it wasn't in any way Adam's scene - but then, it wasn't hers, either.

What was she doing here?

Taking a deep breath, she moved closer to the crowd, treading lightly, her mask dangling from one hand, her rifle held oddly in the other. With the hand holding her mask, she gave an awkward little wave to Shae, looking around at everyone present.

She was getting the strong sense that she was the amateur of the group.

The appearance of two new faces seemed to mitigate the slight disappointment Kami felt at Charlie's departure and she turned a full-wattage smile onto both Samuel and Alexandria. The gentlemanly nod made her laugh softly and she ducked a deft little curtsy, carefully balancing her weapon and mask in the process. She might not necessarily know which way to point the gun but it was clear the girl had grace.

"Hi, you two," she said as she straightened. "I'm Kami from 607." Instinctively identifying the shy one, she held out her free hand to Alexandria though Samuel got another smile equivalent of a fistful of stars. "And I hope to God I'm not the only newbie or I'll be shot in the first three minutes and have to wait on the sidelines with drinks and sponges for the victors."

Shae merely shook his head and chuckled at Kami's very astute observation, while a part of him wondered if it was possible for fluorescent orange to be ANYbody's color. He was just about to toss some playfully witty retort her way when he caught sight of the new addition approaching them.

...big fucker, wasn't he? Shae took a few moments to size up his opponent, from the steady stride to the disarming grin to the easy confidence with which he wielded his paintball marker. Now here was the real competition.

His grin widened, and the returning challenge in his voice was crystal clear. "Soon as you catch me, Cap'." Shae offered a hand out to the other man, seemingly unintimidated by the differences in their physical statures; he'd never been the largest of men, but he had the speed and agility to compensate for that fact. Only time would tell just how well Samuel measured up, though he doubted he'd be too disappointed. "You mus' be da Sergeant, yeah? Shae Dufraisne. I' be keepin' mah eye on you."

Alex had already reached the group by that time, and as Kami chirped out her enthusiastic greeting, Shae leaned forward enough to reach out and give the quiet girl's shoulder an affectionate and encouraging squeeze. He didn't greet her vocally, at least not at first, but he smiled warmly and winked.

"I am," Samuel said, his grin flashing bright once more. "Don't let me distract you from these other threats, though. I'm sure you've got a couple of people here who'd pop you when you least suspected it." He nodded, amused, toward the smaller girls; often enough their ilk proved the most ruthless competitors once a little practice got them used to their new weapons and terrain. For this and many other reasons besides, Samuel was looking quite forward to the first round, and eager to be off.

Introductions appeared to have been made; the stage was set and Samuel, for one, was ready to go. He raised a hand, face mask dangling from his grip, and waved to his floor-mate Charlie as she emerged from the building.

"Looks like a good crowd's here already," he said, addressing no-one in particular. He slipped his face mask on, securing it firmly in place. "Who else we waiting on?"

Samuel was right- they seemed to have accumulated quite the little group. Not a bad turnout, he thought as he glanced around at his fellow players. Not a bad turnout at all.

He was about to open his mouth when he spotted two more figures approaching, one of which he recognized immediately as his cohort from the gay bar incident. Ah, so he'd finally arrived, had he?

Shae waited until the pair, plus Charlie, who'd returned from the main building, had come within earshot before replying. "Looks good ta me. 'Dere's a few rules ta da first game...'den we' get stahted."

Chris and Ren

2010-10-12 05:29 pm UTC (link)
Chris had never really been a paintball sort of person, but that was mostly because nobody ever wanted to try and compete with him. Everything was fun and games up until he started losing, at which point games became very serious business; this was compounded by the fact that Chris was not, for all his energy and talk, very good at sports. Fortunately, paintball was only sort of a sport. Or at least that's what he'd figured out. It was sort of like hunting, only less fatal and a lot more humiliating for the losers. Who would not be him.

Oh, no, not at all.

It was Ren who'd pointed out the invitation on the boards to him, and, somehow managing to finagle the night off by working double shifts before them, he was now pulling into the parking lot with his friend, ready for an evening of kicking ass and taking names. The promise of potential beer afterward was even better. Imagine a round of drinks right after a glorious, bruising victory on the paintball fields! Best way to start a weekend ever.

"So you know the guy who set this up?" he asked Ren as they headed for the setup. Work had been kicking his ass lately, and the building going fucking insane really hadn't helped matters any.

Ren figured Chris would love the idea of shooting balls of paint and unsuspecting targets out on a closed field. Especially after the stress of the building changing and then changing back. Not to mention neither of them particularly enjoyed their jobs. Besides, after Chris decided to hole himself up in his apartment after the building went through the strange metamorphosis, Ren felt he needed some time outside and he wasn't counting work. Besides, how else would Ren have gotten there? Walking?

"Eh, well I don't know him personally, but he seemed like a nice enough guy on the board. There are supposed to be some girls at this thing though too. And I think that guy Samuel, you know the police officer, might be coming." Ren grinned a little. "You could actually shoot at a cop without getting arrested."

Ren needed something to make himself feel more like a guy again after the gay bar incident. He hadn't told Chris about it, cause he knew his friend would never let him live down the fact that he had walked into a gay bar without even knowing it. There were just something that are not beneficial to share.

He grinned at Chris as they walked through the doors of the establishment, collected their equipment and were told which field to go to meet their group. "Are you ready to get covered in paint?"

Girls and a cop? The girls he wasn't so sure he could shoot at freely without getting curbstomped later, but if it was in a totally friendly and fun, safe environment, then a cop ... well. He could get away without even the slightest reprimand, right? Unless he aimed for the face. But that wouldn't be playing fair, so he'd try to avoid it.

Not that Chris had anything in particular against cops, it was just the idea of shooting at one without getting tossed in jail for the rest of his life was ... well, tempting, to say the least. Paintball was clearly filling itself with advantages he hadn't thought of before.

"Sounds like fun," he said with a smirk as they got their gear. "Though I bet that means he's got killer aim. Are we fucked? I think we're fucked." Though that was kind of the point of teams. At the suggestion he was about to get covered in paint, Chris snorted and straightened out the vest they'd given him. Him? Lose? As if! "I hope you're ready to get completely fucking pelted, here, buddy."

Friendly fire tended to be a problem for Chris.

"Probably. Just don't get to close to him. Or anyone really." Ren held the marker up toward his friend and closed one eye and pretended to shoot him. He grinned at his friend and was sure that the two of them at least would probably end up shooting the hell out of each other at close range. It wasn't like either of them were actors at work. They wouldn't get chewed out too badly for having bruises showing. "These things are supposed to hurt pretty badly at close range."

Ren was expecting friendly fire and he planned to return it.

He got the information of which field they're group would be in and left the building, putting on his protective mask that was given to them with their equipment over his glasses and his face. It would not do to have to buy a new set of frames or lenses after all of this.

"You know, I wouldn't trust any of the girls either. Some sounded really eager to shoot at some guys if you know what I mean."

If Chris showed up at work covered in bruises and sporting a couple cuts, he knew he wasn't going to get yelled at. If anything people would compliment him on how advanced he was getting with his costume. Oh, hey, Chris, looking dead today! In his line of work, that was, somehow, a compliment. But as long as it wasn't getting him fired, he'd put up with it. for a while, anyway.

"Don't aim that at my goddamn face," he said dryly, pushing the end of the gun away and glancing over at the few other people nearby. "Aim for the vest. You know, where you're supposed to aim? Geeze." Chris intended to aim for the spots that stung - like, as mentioned, the chest. But the arms were good, too, as were the legs, and anywhere else visible. Except the head. And the nuts. If you didn't shoot anybody in the crotch, they wouldn't return the favor.

But if they started it ...

"No kidding? Not surprised." He gave the gun a gleeful look and straightened the protective gear, making sure it was on at least halfway decently. "Any chance they can get to nail a couple of guys with bullets that don't kill, they'll take. I've heard it before, I know what I'm talking about."

Ren laughed, "What? Afraid that I'm going to ruin it? Are you sure you don't want a giant bruise on your face?"

He set the barrel of the marker on his shoulder and figured he was striking a really cool pose. He wouldn't have really shot it in Chris's face, unless he was drunk or it had accidentally gone off. It wouldn't do that right? Did these things have a safety on them? He took the marker off his shoulder and started looking it over. The guys back at the building had given them the basics of how to use the equipment but Ren was still a little wary.

"Hey don't only shoot at me tonight, ok? Course I would like to see you even hit me." Ren grinned and then moved his focus toward the woman who was walking past them and back toward the main building they had just left. He felt like he knew her from somewhere, and then it hit him like a ton of bricks. It was the girl with the bad attitude on the elevator. She didn't seem to recognize him, oh yeah, he still had the helmet on. Hm, maybe he should keep it on just in case now.

Ren turned around and started walking backwards, waiting until she was out of earshot and then points at her retreating form. "Is she here for the game? Be careful of her. I have a feeling that she really will hit below the belt."

After the game official had finished explaining the rules of the "Bounty Hunters" game- namely, not to shoot anyone at point blank range without first offering them the option of surrender- Shae left the group and headed into the almost labyrinthine, apocalyptic gamefield, taking full advantage of his sixty second headstart to put as much distance as possible between himself and his would-be pursuers.

Once he'd covered enough ground to feel comfortable, he quickly selected a hiding spot that kept him well-concealed from any approaching players. He'd learned how to track and be tracked as a child, so he'd left little evidence of his presence in sight. Paintball marker in-hand and at the ready, he crouched in place and waited to see who might be his first unlucky victim.

Though Kami had looked dubious about the premise of the game when the instructor had been going over the rules and had, more than once, cast a raised eyebrow and puzzled glance in Shae's direction, she nodded her understanding. Then she had shouldered her gun dutifully and, in blatant disregard to the military feel of the event, gave Shae a cheery little wave. She called "good luck" after his retreating back before turning back to study her would-be teammates. Some looked less than amused at her well-wishing.

Kami offered a bright smile and a shrug by way of apology. "There's more of us than him," she pointed out, "and one of us is a cop." She looked over her shoulder in the direction Shae had gone, then back to the others. "So... I don't have a clue what I'm doing. Who wants to order me around a little?"
