everybody's comin'; leave your body at the door
Who: EVERYONE.
What: The Pax Halloween Party, part one.
Where: Pax Letale apartment complex, rec room.
When: 7 p.m., Oct. 31.
Notes: Hi guys! Sorry this took so long to get up; things have been pretty crazy here. But here is the Halloween event! This is the first part, and should be treated like a regular event; please mark where and when your character can be found throughout the room. Please remember that your character must be wearing their Halloween mask provided to them at the beginning of the month in order to gain admission to the rec room party. This is crucial for the second part of the event. If there are two people in a thread, please ask permission before entering; if you have any questions, please contact the mods! Now on with the show!

Despite the general eeriness of the building at large, those who make their way downstairs to the Halloween party will find it decorated to entertain. The lobby's emptiness will have been filled by a set of bloody sticker footprints from the elevator leading toward the rec room, through the door of which lights and music blare into the hallway. Stephan is waiting outside the entry way, dressed to the nines like a bald Morticia Addams, his red nails clicking on a clipboard as he takes note of who's arrived and who hasn't. Those who aren't dressed appropriately—read: with their Pax-provided masks—will be denied entry until they go and retrieve said item. Upon entry, Stephan will make the remark that attendees are to enjoy themselves, and that a special guest of honor will arrive a few hours later.

Those who make it past the drag queen bouncer will find a rather ghoulishly delightful party inside. Orange and black streamers hang in wound loops from the walls, pinned carefully to the molding near the ceiling. Bats, cartoon cutouts of witches flying over a waning moon, black cats, and pumpkins all cover the walls from top to bottom; carved pumpkins are set on every available table space, lit and flickering in the low light. The doors to the pool area are open, a disco ball shining orange, black and white specks over everything as classic Halloween hits are played from a nearby boombox. The pool itself glows a ghostly green.

Back inside the rec room, a long table opposite the pool table is laden with hot dog finger treats, feet made of meatloaf, speared deviled eggs painted like eyeballs, and every other appropriately-themed Halloween food item an attendee could think of. In the middle of it all, amid black and orange plates and clear, orange-y cups, is a bowl filled generously with store-bought candy. On either side are punch bowls filled with green and red liquid; the former will taste like apple cider, the latter a regular tropical punch. Neither are alcoholic, but attendees are welcome to sneak their own into the party—Stephan's not watching that closely.

Overall, the party seems normal—too normal for some, though no one will find any mislaid bear traps, poisoned candy or razor-blade laden apples anywhere in the vicinity. Might as well enjoy it while it lasts....

Matthew followed happily, feeling all the better with her beside him and the focus of conversation between them. Much like any other apartment-wide event, he felt guilt with every neighbor he saw and distinctly remembered them on the table. Luckily, there were new people whom he hadn't met and that made it a touch easier.

Reaching to grab cups from behind the bowl, his eyes went wide. "You can literally smell the booze in this one," he pointed out, as he reached for the ladle and began pouring the drinks into two cups. "So it must be good and better than just punch."

Alex laughed, accepting the filled cup without hesitation. It was going to help enormously in dealing with everyone else in this building.

"All right... do you think you could point some people out to me?" She still hadn't met half of those in the room, despite the building not even being at half capacity. Images of the tapes rolled through her mind—a man bleeding out on Matt's operating table, a woman exploding into flowers, so many others—but for now they remained nameless and mostly faceless due to the masks the evening required.

"Out of the ones you know, anyway," she added, glancing back at Matt with a smile. "We should try to say hello to some of them? Be collegial and all that."

"Ah," Matthew glanced at the crowd and frowned before turning back to his punch pouring. After offering a cup to Alex, he took his own and took a deep drink before filling it up again. If they were going to be collegial, he needed alcohol to assist him.

"Well, over there is Isobel and Alice," he said softly, leaning toward her and speaking against her ear. "Isobel is the woman who had the flowers appear. Alice is the girl with the bakery. Nothing odd happened to her though. At least not on the table."

Her head bobbed, a tepid sip of her punch revealing a grossly overdone amount of alcohol in it. Alex scrunched her nose for a moment, and gently swirled the cup to try and mix its contents better. She pointed a finger in the direction of the 300 cast-off and his apparent friends.

"Do you know any of them?" They were much louder and boisterous than the rest of the party, which interested her simply because of the difference. Her hand went to Matt's upper arm, squeezing it in a subtle sign of reassurance.

"Not really," Matthew admitted as he cast a glance in the direction of the pool table. "All three guys have been here for awhile, and I haven't seen the girl before. I ran into the big one before. Kal. He's... super friendly and loud. But the other ones..."

He shook his head and sipped his drink. "I know they lived here before I moved in but none of them were in the trials," he murmured as he looked away from them. "There's been such a shift in people coming and going, I'm not surprised anyway. Would you like to go take a seat somewhere? Or dance maybe..."

Alex considered the options presented to her for a moment, then opted for the former.

"Let's sit. And talk. That's what people are supposed to do on dates, right?" The question wasn't so much a question as it was a teasing remark, and Alex slipped her hand into Matt's to lead him through the party. They were possibly some of the most low-key costumes in the vicinity, which didn't bother her at all; better to keep a low profile and observe, rather than pull attention to themselves while they were still sorting everything out.

They moved diagonally across the room, toward a set of plush cushions not too far off from the pool table. The group's antics entertained her a little, and at the very least it might provide suitable distraction or another jumping off point if she and Matt needed it. When in doubt, prepare for all over possibilities...

She took a seat first, tugging Matt into the same cushioned bench as her. There was a round table nearby, which she graced with her drink after she'd taken another sip.

"So, Matt. How's life?"

Matthew laughed as he sat down beside her. "Oh, you know," He began, then realized he wouldn't get off that easily and grinned. He settled into the seat and held his cup up, looking at the punch shifting in it as he began to answer her question at length.

"I met this girl years ago, you know, and she was really interesting and put up with me when we worked together. Then I moved away and I missed her. A lot. But then she ended up moving nearby, really nearby, and working with me again. I figured after some crazy shit happened that it was time to make a move and now I guess we're dating. Crazy, huh?" Slyly, he glanced at Alex before looking at the crowd in the room.

"Wow," Alex snickered, blond brows creeping up her forehead. Her smile widened, and she leaned into his larger figure, ignoring the other party-goers around them for a moment. "That seems like a pretty rushed turn of events. You think it's going to get serious?"

Matthew licked his lips and squirmed in the chair, nervous by this kind of talk but obviously trying his best to stick to it and be brave. The fact that she seemed to respond happily to it all only gave him increased confidence. "It was rushed, or so it seems. We've known each other for awhile though, so perhaps it hasn't been rushed, it's just been silent all this time. And now it's in the open and I mean... I hope it gets serious, I'd like for it to, but really that's entirely up to her and what she'd like."

He glanced quickly at Alex, then opted to stare into his punch. "This is painfully strong," he muttered to the drink.

This time she laughed, unable to stifle both the excitement and her amusement at Matt's anxiety. Her hand brushed down his arm, ending at the wrist holding the cup; she turned the rest of her body to press against him, all curves and softness against the muscle she could feel under his suit.

"It is, but that's not a bad thing, Mattie. Sometimes people need clearer signs, hm?" Her other hand went to his nape, turning his head back toward hers so their mouths were only a breath away.

"And I think she's just enjoying what they have, and you should too. Don't have to think every hypothesis clear through to a solid solution, you know? Not everything's a list to be checked off..." She smiled, her gaze dragging up from his mouth to meet his. Then Alex leaned forward, pressing her mouth to Matt's; the motion was slow, careful, but in the end, even with her cold touch, burning.

There was the tiny pause of surprise from Matt, but it was quickly surpassed. It wasn't even a surprise she was doing it, simply that of self doubt and that she was kissing him. But quickly he leaned into her and her kiss; his lips hot against her touch as he tried to stop himself from smiling through it all.

His arm with the cup moved artfully around them as he reached to set his cup on a table behind the couch and missed miserably, letting the cup drop to the floor with a clunk and the liquid spilling. Matthew, however, didn't notice and instead focused on gently, so gently, wrapping his arms around his date.

Alex did, however, the liquid splattering her legs just a tad; it wasn't that it was cold, but simply that it was annoying, and she was worried about her shoes, of all things, because they were expensive.

She popped back from the kiss, not at all regretting the action or its consequence, but she did pull her legs up to cross almost over Matt's knees.

"Getting a little prematurely excited, are we?" She teased, one hand running over the seam of her skirt as she inspected the rest of her legs. "How are you going to make up for that little mess, mister?"

"Oh god," Matthew said with a groan, sitting up fully as he beheld the bright punch on her leg. "I'll go get a napkin, I'm so sorry."

His hands were on her chilly hands and he gave them a squeeze, looking at her with obvious embarrassment and an apology clear on his face. He was already moving, already untangling himself with her and getting to his feet as his face grew hot and his gaze pulled away to see if there were napkins over by the punch bowl.

She caught his hand, pulling him to a stop and using his weight to pull herself to a standing position.

"That's not what I meant," she laughed, gripping his hand tightly. "It's fine, OK? I'm uninjured, and it was just a drink. Be glad you didn't splatter my Choos." She twisted one foot onto the toe, displaying the all-black heels that had just a touch of sparkle on the heel. Alex grinned up at Matt.

"Now, you can make it up to me and them by taking us dancing for a bit, all right?"

Matthew seemed to deflate, the tension from his form and his sorrow easing out of him in a rush. He smiled, naturally, and gripped her hand in his as he nodded. "Dancing I can do. I mean, some of those awful ballroom dances my mother made me take had to have sunk in at some point, right?"

He gave her a wink, laughing at his own ridiculous behavior, but didn't pause to reconsider as he led his date to the center of the room where they could dance. All things considered, like the fact they were surrounded by his patients, things were turning out quite nice.
