everybody's comin'; leave your body at the door
Who: EVERYONE.
What: The Pax Halloween Party, part one.
Where: Pax Letale apartment complex, rec room.
When: 7 p.m., Oct. 31.
Notes: Hi guys! Sorry this took so long to get up; things have been pretty crazy here. But here is the Halloween event! This is the first part, and should be treated like a regular event; please mark where and when your character can be found throughout the room. Please remember that your character must be wearing their Halloween mask provided to them at the beginning of the month in order to gain admission to the rec room party. This is crucial for the second part of the event. If there are two people in a thread, please ask permission before entering; if you have any questions, please contact the mods! Now on with the show!

Despite the general eeriness of the building at large, those who make their way downstairs to the Halloween party will find it decorated to entertain. The lobby's emptiness will have been filled by a set of bloody sticker footprints from the elevator leading toward the rec room, through the door of which lights and music blare into the hallway. Stephan is waiting outside the entry way, dressed to the nines like a bald Morticia Addams, his red nails clicking on a clipboard as he takes note of who's arrived and who hasn't. Those who aren't dressed appropriately—read: with their Pax-provided masks—will be denied entry until they go and retrieve said item. Upon entry, Stephan will make the remark that attendees are to enjoy themselves, and that a special guest of honor will arrive a few hours later.

Those who make it past the drag queen bouncer will find a rather ghoulishly delightful party inside. Orange and black streamers hang in wound loops from the walls, pinned carefully to the molding near the ceiling. Bats, cartoon cutouts of witches flying over a waning moon, black cats, and pumpkins all cover the walls from top to bottom; carved pumpkins are set on every available table space, lit and flickering in the low light. The doors to the pool area are open, a disco ball shining orange, black and white specks over everything as classic Halloween hits are played from a nearby boombox. The pool itself glows a ghostly green.

Back inside the rec room, a long table opposite the pool table is laden with hot dog finger treats, feet made of meatloaf, speared deviled eggs painted like eyeballs, and every other appropriately-themed Halloween food item an attendee could think of. In the middle of it all, amid black and orange plates and clear, orange-y cups, is a bowl filled generously with store-bought candy. On either side are punch bowls filled with green and red liquid; the former will taste like apple cider, the latter a regular tropical punch. Neither are alcoholic, but attendees are welcome to sneak their own into the party—Stephan's not watching that closely.

Overall, the party seems normal—too normal for some, though no one will find any mislaid bear traps, poisoned candy or razor-blade laden apples anywhere in the vicinity. Might as well enjoy it while it lasts....

Re: Max/Mercy/Nate- 7pm - Loitering in the Lobby

"Understatement of the year," Nate said. He punctuated the thought with another generous sip from his drink. "This place is crazy by her standards." His index finger uncurled from the side of his cup, pointing at Mercy. He knew the moment he did it the reaction it would elicit, but he could not resist, all the same.

"I've always slept like a baby," he lied, "but since I moved here? Weird dreams like you wouldn't believe. Then I wake up and leave the apartment and the whole damn floor's changed. Is it always like this?"

"Yeah, dreams are a thing here," she nodded to them sympathetically. "I once had this dream, no joke, that I was an actual cat. Like, roaming around my apartment and playing with my cat Cali, and she was explaining to me about how to be a cat, and play like a cat...and she kept calling me 'my queen'...it was weird," she giggled carelessly, taking another sip of punch. "Wow that's strong," she laughed.

"So there's also the weird shit that happens sometimes on the different floors...my favourite was when one of the top floors turned into, like, a desert paradise? there was fruit trees and crocodiles and sandy beach and a river...I literally didn't leave until it was over, except to steal some roasted meat and bottles of rum off some sort of altar on another floor," she said, as if they should already have accepted what she was saying as normal.

Mercy's mouth opened to immediately refute Nate's words—the crazy, the sleeping—but Max was already talking before she could get the thoughts out. The idea of a desert island paradise made her click her mouth shut, though only for a moment.

"Hold up, so you're saying what they did on the floors isn't a holiday thing? They do this regularly?" A beach theme wasn't exciting to her, but the thought of some in-house bar was. She wished Nate hadn't brought up the dream because she didn't want to describe the, ahem, gory details to anyone, but it seemed like that whole conversational tangent was being quickly glossed over.

"Wait, did you say crocodiles?" Mercy blinked, trying to wrap her head around the whole thing. "So they did some blow up pool toys with some, what, sand spread around in a corner? I guess that's...nice. Did they ever say why?"

"Or how?"

Nate shook his head. From the look on his face it was clear, dreams or no, he had no inclination whatsoever to believe Max's tales. Decorations were one thing. Ecosystems and living creatures were quite another. Mercy's explanations made far more sense, and surely, he told himself, that was what Max had meant. So he kept an ear out for her agreement as he returned to the table, picking at the deviled eggs in search of a particularly appetizing one. The liquor sat heavy on his stomach, and it seemed wise to let something promptly soak it up.

"Apparently Stephan is as good with interior design as he is with eyeliner," he offered. "Or he's got a little horde of Keebler elves coming out of the woodwork to help him overnight." He cut an amused look to his sister. "I mean it's not the worst thing we've seen go down in our house, you know?"

"Well, I wouldn't say it's a regular thing, but maybe occasional? So that time that floor turned into a desert - a real desert, no fake plastic shit," she added, looking right at Mercy, "there was other stuff going on the other floors. One was all white marble with strange altars, one was completely open sky with walls of tall grass...one was literally one giant log cabin with never-ending kegs of beer...anyway, that only happened the one time. Then there was the time that none of the floors made sense. I opened my apartment door and it led right into someone else's living room. Like whaaaat?" she laughed, emptying the last of her punch and shifting to pur herself another cup.

"But seriously..." she leant in close and stage-whispered, "this place is not normal. We were literally locked in the building for a full week, and when we got out, nobody noticed we were gone."

Mercy blinked, unable to comprehend what Max was describing. She could imagine it well enough, but believe it? Even with the one dream she and Nate had shared, this was all too much. She bit her lip to keep from laughing in Max's face.

"So why do you stay?" She had to almost shout over the music.

Nate nodded, seconding the question. He himself had no plans to leave, but this might have been due, at least in part, to his wholesale dismissal of what Max was describing. The changes he had witnessed were minor by comparison. Even the keys and the strange, changed rooms surely had some rational explanations, even if he was not privy to it. Whole floors altered into genuine ecosystems was another thing altogether. He caught himself wondering, uncharitably, about Max's potential drug use. He popped a deviled egg into his mouth and moved back to Mercy's side, covering his mouth as he chewed.

Max blinked in surprise at the question. "Because I live here?" she said simply, a hint of a question at the end of the statement.

"And...I mean, really, I gotta be honest with you, it's fun," she said with a grin. "Where else can you live where all kinds of crazy stuff happens to break up the monotony?" she asked, taking a sip from her newly refilled punch. "And I gotta say, after all that buildup this month with the keys and the stuff in the hallways, I'm kind of disappointed with this standard-assed party," she said, looking at the pumpkins and streamers with a bit of a disappointed frown. "But whatever, they can't always knock it out of the park, can they? Maybe they used up their budget already on the desert thing," she mused with a shrug.

Shrugging, Mercy was inclined to agree with Max's assessment; it certainly was a lot of build up for such a small payoff.

"Well, let's liven this party up a little bit," she said, grabbing Nate's hand. "It's my birthday, and the birthday girl wants to dance." Holding her brother's hand over her head, she started steering the small group and their drinks toward the criminally empty dance floor, just as "Purple People Eater" started to play.

"Christ, someone needs to plug in their iPod..."

Nate moved quickly in front of his sister, shouldering partygoers out of the way until they reached the dance floor. "If this music doesn't get better soon," he said, "I'll go upstairs and get mine. Or we'll just bail and go watch more Exorcist. Whatever the birthday girl wants..."

Max's eyebrows rose. "Damn, let's get some fire burning on this dancefloor," she said with a wide grin, following the siblings through the crowd, despite the lackluster music playing
