Who: Simon and his very frustrated uncle Pierce.
What: Drunk!Simon needs a place to sleep.
Where: The Tower.
When: IDK. After this.
Warnings: Whiny and crying Simon, most likely.

Frustrated beyond all belief, Pierce closed the laptop and reached for the glass of wine he had on the end table by the couch. He was up late catching up on work, of course, but sidetracked with thinking about Olivia. That was probably why he had even responded to Simon's drunken pleadings in the first place - because that dream he had with Olivia in it was the only thing keeping him going, still giving him some shred of hope that she would be alright. He had promised her though, promised to try to help Casper despite the deplorable things he had done and was subsequently punished for. If you did something wrong and were punished, you had the opportunity to learn from the experience and mend your ways, but no one could go around doing whatever they wanted and not expect consequences. And he believed in reform, certainly, but the person had to want help and had to want to mend their ways. Otherwise they'd just turn around and do the exact same thing again, expecting compassion and kindness for horrible behavior.

Tiredly, he pressed the heel of his hands to both eyes, trying to remember when his last decent night of sleep had actually been. That was when he heard something outside - the telltale sign of a thump, like someone had hit the ground right by his door.

Fuck.

It couldn't actually be him, could it? But when Pierce opened the door and saw Simon's sprawled form on the carpet in the hallway, he sighed heavily. The kid must have been on his way up when he proclaimed he was going to sleep in the street instead. Oh well, at least he made it here.

Ah, the joys of fatherhood. Or in this case, unclehood. There wasn't much difference right now. Grumbling inwardly, Pierce bent down and helped Simon up - while it was tempting to just drag him in by his ankles, that might end in a nasty case of rug burn - and held him steady so he could get him inside the apartment.

He felt half there, disconnected, as Pierce dragged him outside, the pain leaving him shaking, practically vibrating with it. But the moment there was fresh air, the crisp spray of the ocean licking at his senses, Simon did seem to calm, though it came in jagged little jumps that he couldn't control. Knees were weak, and after several long moments had passed, several deep breaths taken, Simon could finally bring himself to look at Pierce. His hands turned, gripping Pierce's arms in return, but he couldn't bring himself to speak. Not yet. Not yet.

They both stumbled out onto the balcony, Pierce holding tightly to Simon to prevent him from lashing out, and then when they got there they both slid down against the railing, down to the ground - actually, Pierce did first but he ended up taking Simon with him.

What the hell was that?

For a few minutes, he just listened to the ocean, the waves crashing onto the shore in the stillness of the night. It seemed to calm the both of them.

"Tell me what you want, Simon," Pierce encouraged him. "You're not a harbinger of anger and hate." Though, really, he wasn't exactly doing the best job of convincing people otherwise. Some improvement was needed in this venue. "You're angry, yes, but that's not all you are. "Who do you want to be? What do you want to do?"

There were so many puzzle pieces starting to gravitate toward one another. Olivia could kill people with her pinkie finger, Simon turned into a wolf. Billy glowed like the lights of the Christmas season. What was happening to them all? It was all connected somehow, and some answers would be extremely helpful right about now.

He felt drained as the minutes ticked by, leaning against the railing and partially against Pierce, just the sound of crashing waves and the night music filling the air. There were no words for the longest time, just simple silence, even at Pierce's questions. What did he want? Who did he want to be? What did he want to do? Simon didn't have the answers for questions that complicated, he hardly had the answers for simple questions like... what did he want for dinner?

So he closed his eyes, trying to absorb some of the calm of the world around him, trying to find some sense of peace somewhere... anywhere. "I really don't know..." he said quietly. "Someone... that my dad, wherever he is, would be proud of?" It was a silly thing, something that wore and tore at him, the fact that he had more family out there somewhere... family that had, for whatever reason, saw him and Olivia separated, a country between them. It wasn't just chance. He knew it wasn't chance.

Of course, Pierce wouldn't tell him that was impossible. David didn't want his kids and never would, and was basically a gold medal winning asshole concerning paternity. But it was still a good goal, because right now that spine-tingling sense of dread, and thus the separation, made all the sense in the world. And Pierce didn't want it to - a part of him wanted to be proved wrong. Not for him, but for Simon too. He could be better than this.

"I understand," he said after Simon spoke up. "And I don't know what seeing these things in the mirror means or what's to come but I do know that overcoming adversity is something to be very proud of. And you can do that, Simon. With Aura, with Billy...with me too."

Simon edged away, not out of anger or anything negative in origin, but for the simple need to have his space, stretching out on the balcony, resting on his back. The drunken stupor seemed to have faded, leaving him somber and dark. "Billy isn't going to want anything to do with me again," he said quietly, staring up at the stars, the lights that had told stories to the people in the past. "And even if Aura can forgive me... how can I trust myself around her? And you..." A pause, and he wiped at his eyes, closing them moments later. "You say it's for Aura... but no one does something like this just because they promised someone else. You don't even like me. I can tell that much."

"You know that's not true about Billy," was all Pierce said. His son was one of the most forgiving people he knew, if not the most forgiving. "He has a stubborn streak but he doesn't like being mad at people, especially someone like you - someone he's close to."

Goddamn, he needed a cigarette. But the cancer sticks were back inside and Pierce didn't feel like going back in. It was a nice night out anyway, and they were actually having a discussion without screaming for once. Nevermind that it had to be close to 3:00 AM by now. "Aura loves you, she believes that you can be better. You have to believe that too, Simon. That's where it all begins."
