The only acquiescence to the theme that had been supplied by the location selected for the latest Pax event was Flogging Molly blaring from the jukebox crammed so close to the bathroom that men and women alike had to slide their asses over its front, glass-encased menu to pee in privacy. The rest of the bar had been left untouched; the money covering every grimey inch a reminder of all the hard work put into the small bar that kept it alive.

Extra liquor was provided by the complex, entirely unnecessary and yet done regardless. Food was likewise on hand, this time the Pax management sending over their particular cook to create a plethora of holiday-themed foods: bite-sized servings of Irish stew on kabobs, shepherd's pie in small cups complete with edible potato spoons, Irish soda bread, chocolate stout cupcakes, and scones just a small sampling of the menu on hand. The bar's owner had provided her own take on the holiday's culinary offerings with gummy shamrocks soaked in vodka.

Staff was left entirely up to the location's owner, though carefully vetted by Pax management. It seemed all was well in hand by the time the first tenants decided to arrive.

Chris was well into his cups by the time the party was actually supposed to have started. His job held odd hours, so he'd had most of the day free; making a small attempt at the holiday theme, he was wearing a button-up, olive green shirt with black slacks. He'd gotten to the bar early, and nerves had called for round after round of beers to the point where now he was feeling comfortably numb but also slightly bored. At least he wasn't freaking out at the prospect of being seen in public with Daniel; even though the other man had agreed to play nice and keep his hands to himself, Chris still harbored doubts that that would actually happen. And now he was feeling bad about asking for it to happen, because the whole idea was so silly.

"Man, you'd think people would be getting here sooner, with how much money management spends on this stuff," he said toward AJ, who was cleaning glasses behind the bar. Chris hadn't seen Jay, though he expected to before the night was out. The girl merely shrugged, smiling at him, either happy to talk to a good looking guy regardless of his sexuality or she was amused at the fact that he was already nearly drunk. He hadn't even tried the gummy shamrocks yet.

Aurora was sure to never arrive on time to a party, partially for appearances sake and also because she was just abysmal at being timely if it wasn't for work. It wasn't her fault. Mostly, she just fussed over her...everything. Too long.

Besides that, this wasn't exactly her usual affair so she could be forgiven if she didn't rush to the gathering. Still, she sat herself at the bar, smiling at the pretty girl behind it and stuffing a five in the tip jar before ordering a drink she theorized they probably couldn't even make, "Singapore Sling, please." And she glanced over at the man beside her, "Some of us were busy, thank you very much." But she smiled still, sweeping her hair back in the same motion.

"Oh yeah?" He nursed a few more drinks out of his beer, feeling far more friendly than he normally would. Chris finished the drink, and pushed it out toward the bartender, nodding at her unspoken question of 'another?'

"So what's your excuse? Work? It's a Friday, and St. Paddy's on top of that." The words were said in a jovial manner, not at all meant to be offensive despite their content. He put both hands out on the counter before him, sitting up straight as he tried not to wobble off of his stool.

The girl brought her drink back to her with a challenging eyebrow and Aurora nodded in acknowledgement that they were able to live up to her request, "Thank you." She sipped at it cautiously, finding herself pleased by the mix.

Aurora shook her head at the man, "No, I got off work at noon, I took the excuse to play with eyeshadow." She tapped below one of her eyes, the mix of purples and greens around it more loud and theatrical than she would do on a normal evening but was fun when given the opportunity. Truthfully she might have stalled out of nagging worry she would meet that man again before deciding he wouldn't stop her from having fun, "But this is not one of my favorite holidays, admittedly. But you seem to be enjoying yourself."

He regarded her skillful work with an impressed look, his mouth turning down and jutting out his bottom lip with no small amount of exaggeration. It melted into an easy smile. He happily accepted the next drink to come his way, taking another drink as though to wet his throat before replying.

"I am," he admitted. "Though thank god today is a drinking holiday, because it's an incredibly easy way to cover nerves. I'm waiting for someone, and of course he's late. I don't think he's doing his eyebrows, though, but I could be wrong. Punctuality isn't people's strong suit, I've learned." Of course, normally Chris never would've admitted such a thing to anyone, let alone a complete stranger. But the liquor easily made it seem like a good idea.

Aurora definitely didn't preen, although maybe a little. It would have just been sad if she couldn't do makeup better than the average Jane after all her years of spending time with professionals.

She leaned forward and then back to give him a through look, "You're handsome," It wasn't said with a lecherous tone, she wasn't flirting with him but just making an honest assessment, "You shouldn't have nerves, but more men should do their eyebrows. My ex had serious caterpillars. Has." Daniel was still alive, last time she checked.

"Some men just can't be taught," he agreed, waving aside this constant assertion that he was pleasing to the eye. Both this woman and Daniel probably needed to get their eyes checked, but it was less of a concern to Chris in that moment than Daniel's absence was. "You know, up until now he's been pretty good about being timely, but I guess he could still be getting ready. Probably trying on fifty different outfits and doing his hair," his hand rose, pinching both fingers together in a mocking motion of his words, "juuuust right."

The thought made him laugh, and he slung back another drink, leaning in a touch too close to this woman, who he was more than happy to be amicably chatty with. "I will say, though, the end result is always totally worth it. Then again, I thought it was the stereotype for women to keep men waiting, not the other way around."

Taking a long drink of her sling Aurora cast another glance around the bar, "I don't know if this sort of occasion is really worth all that fuss to be honest." She eyed the gummies with wariness, though the food with a bit more optimism as she spoke.

The man smelled nice and had a nice jawline, so she allowed the encroachment into her bubble with a warm smile, "Most stereotypes are antiquated and perpetuated by he most vocal, I've found my male lovers to be more demanding than my female." She plucked the cherry out of the top of her drink to bite it before popping the stem in her mouth.

Chris nodded in agreement with her statement. "That's true, that's very true. My mom and my abuela were always the ones keeping me and my abuelo in line. Guess things like that get said by people who feel put out, huh? Little more control.

"And no," he agreed again, casting a drunk eye around the establishment; most people were wearing faded green, something they'd dug out of the back of their closet or a new throw-away shirt from a bargain store that had "Kiss me, I'm (kinda) Irish" or a similar slogan embossed on the front. "Don't think Jay has any kind of dress code for here." He turned back to the woman, conspiratorially. "He's probably working off some nerves. Doesn't want people to think it of him, but he gets embarrassed easily. It's kinda cute; you say one wrong thing and he gets all bent out of shape trying to prove you wrong."

He took another drink, then finally remembered to extend his hand, though he ended up switching the bottle from one to the other to awkwardly extend the appendage closest to the woman. "Chris, by the way. I don't think we've seen each other around the complex."

Aurora laughed at that, holding her drink up towards him, "I'll cheers to that, I think my whole family has scars from getting hit with greasy spatulas from my Abuela." Her's forced her whole family to accept a man from another country and culture with steel eyes.

No dress code was for sure, she saw a man down the line throwing gummies around who looked like he had never seen a clothes iron in his life. She nodded as she took another drink displeased that it was already looking so low, "Oh? Did you do something to make him nervous?" Aurora teased him before nodding, "You know, I try not to date that type anymore, because I can be that way honestly."

Aurora took a moment to wipe her hands on a napkin rather than her dress, before shaking his hand, "Aurora, it's a pleasure."

He took his hand back with a laugh. "Maybe. Might've. I didn't want to come to this thing, but now here we are, here I am, and he's nowhere to be found. Hope me changing my mind didn't make him change his mind, but who knows. He seemed pretty eager."

Chris held up his beer with his other hand. "At least I've got this, and now you to keep me company." He took a swig.

"So then, are you here for the merrymaking or are you waiting on someone, too?"

"Well this can't be good."

Daniel sidled up next to the bar, squeezing his way in between his ex and his current quarry. He had indeed gone through a number of costume changes before leaning into the "holiday" and finally embracing his current look: dark skinny jeans, black Timberlands, a silver signet ring set with an onyx, and a well-worn, fitted green tee shirt with Kiss Me, I'm Taiwanese written in a broad, Celtic-styled script across the chest.

"I knew I should'a got here sooner." He cut a look to each of the partygoers in turn, as though by peering at them with a certain sharpness he might guess what they had been discussing. "What are we drinkin'?"

The bartender girl caught her eye and made her way back over and started to order one of her normal, not alcohol heavy cocktails even as she finished off her first one.

But then she glanced up towards the door and caught a familiar face with eyes on her new drinking buddy and changed tacts, "One Old Fashioned please, generous on the booze." Which was probably a bad idea, especially considering the respectability of this place but the last few weeks had been stressful and she deserved it. Probably.

"Oh hello Daniel, fancy seeing you here," Her gaze switched back to Chris, "You've kept your date waiting, that's awful rude, but at least it gave me a chance to meet my sloppy seconds. Since you've kept him locked away in a box somewhere."

Chris was in the middle of a large sip, halfway turned to take in Daniel in all his glory when Aurora's words hit him and he choked. He fought through some wheezing, pulling himself together enough to spit out a few words.

"Sloppy seconds?" Hitting his chest with a fist, he glanced between Aurora and Daniel, confusion plain on his face. The momentary excitement of his date's arrival flew, dispelled. Suddenly thoughts and memories started to click in his mind, like dominoes falling into place. "Oh, you're that Aurora," as though there was more than one in the building. The short, cursory explanation Daniel had given about his previous relationship was something Chris had filed into the back of his mind and mostly forgotten, until at least this moment.

"Well, I guess he gets more brownie points than you for showing up? From what I've heard?" His loose tongue was doing no one any favors in this current discussion, and he glanced at Daniel after speaking, his eyes quickly trailing down from the man's well-groomed face to the way his shirt fitted over his chest. He did not look displeased by what he saw.

Foolish though it was, Daniel laughed aloud, pointing a finger at Chris. "This man gets it. Better late than never, hon. Besides." He brushed one shoulder with the tips of his fingers. "Perfection takes time." He leaned over the bar long enough to order a double whiskey neat. Then he slid back down, his shoulder bumping playfully into Aurora's.

"One, not my date. We were meetin' here for drinks cos 'tis the season to get trashed. So get your head outta the gutter." He curled a hand around his glass when it came, taking a lengthy sip. Lying, it seemed, was thirsty work. "Two," he added, "you're dressed for big game. Who are you huntin' tonight?"

Aurora scowled, bright red lips twisting in displeasure at how this was going. A sip of her drink to let the bitter alcohol slide down nice and warm into her gut before she looked up at her friend.

"Isn't that nice, turning strangers against me before I get a chance to charm them." She remarked dryly, casting narrowed eyes at Daniel and his stupid wonderful jawline. She wasn't jealous he was in a relationship, this wasn't near his first one since they had split up and it's not like she had trouble getting one herself. But he had made good arm candy.

Aurora sighed, flicking the moisture from her glass at Daniel, "Dear, I am a liar for one career and work with them for another, I've also known you for far too long to not know when you're being one." Another sip, "That and BB told me you had a new paramour."

She jammed her soldier into him and turned towards Chris in a way that was supposed to butt Daniel out of the conversation, switching to Spanish on a hope and a hunch that him having an Abuela meant he spoke the language as well.

"You know, I trusted him to go to him when an awful man was harassing me in the elevator but he doesn't trust me to tell me about his love life suddenly, nine years give or take of friendship and--" Another scowl as she scoffed until she heard his last question to divert attention from himself, "None of your concern Daniel." She was still a little sated from BB, not to mention how her thoughts kept drifting to how, almost instinctively comfortable, safe and domestic she felt around Percy.

Not that she was likely to turn down a good offer tonight though.

Chris's brows shot up, his bottle hovering near his mouth as Aurora switched languages on him in front of Daniel. He set the beer down, grinning from ear to ear.

"Secrets certainly don't make friends. This one's manners definitely need work, I agree completely, but I will say that's part of the charm, don't you think?" Despite his white bread appearance, the Spanish rolled off of his tongue easily and fluently After the words were expelled, he glanced back at Daniel, completely implying that they were, of course, talking about him.

"Yeah, Daniel, none of your concern," he added in, pushing his half-empty bottle from one hand to the other as he reached out to poke the other man in the side; a poke that turned into a slight grab, hooking one finger into a belt loop to pull him more in Chris's direction. "Why, you gonna be jealous if she doesn't go home with you tonight?" His tone implied that he wasn't entirely talking about Aurora.

"Rude. You're both being real rude right now." But Daniel was laughing all the same, and gladly let himself be pulled into Chris's orbit. He leaned against the chair, keeping the barest fraction of distance between them for plausible deniability. It would hardly be enough to throw Aurora off their scent, but he had made a promise and he would make at least this effort to keep it.

"No jealousy here," he said, after steeling himself with another sip from his glass. He knew without looking at either of his companions that this assertion would surely not be believed. "She asks questions about my sex life, I get to ask questions about hers. All's fair, right?" He tipped his glass toward her, throwing her a teasing wink. "Besides, maybe I've already got post-party plans."

Chris's Spanish was a bit different than her own, while her's was Spanish from Spain his was...Mexican likely? But other than some accent variation and probably some colloquialisms it shouldn't cause communication issues, "For a minute perhaps, but his charm, like his stamina can be lacking." She gave Daniel a fond, though forlorn look as she spoke.

"BB is a screamer." She countered to his statement, straight faced, and raised an eyebrow as if to say what now, "Besides I'm sure your sex life is not any more interesting than it used to be, in fact I can probably do better." What was on her New Years Resolutions? Oh yeah, make sure buzzed Aurora was more modest, oops.

Chris nodded, choosing to take another long pull of his drink and finishing it. He looked back to the bartender and ordered a Veracruzana, heavy on the tequila. Despite the fact that his head was spinning, he didn't feel like he'd had enough to be talking about Daniel's stamina with an ex. Once he had his hands wrapped around the yellowish beverage, his lips wrapped around the straw, he turned back to the conversation.

"I bet I know who else is a screamer," he replied, finally, his hand back on Daniel's hip and sliding under the green shirt to show a brief glimpse of warm, ocherous-colored skin before sliding it around to what Chris could reach of Daniel's backside.

Daniel choked on a very poorly timed sip of whiskey. A dusky flush rose to his cheeks. With hands and information flying about so freely, it was becoming increasingly difficult to keep to his word. He made a mental note to make his next meeting with BB at least as uncomfortable as this conversation was. If he knew this much about her now, he could only guess what Aurora had told BB about him.

He glanced briefly down to where Chris sat. He told himself he was only checking out the drink in the other man's hands, carefully considering his own next indulgence. But his gaze wandered from the bright drink to the line of the straw and lingered overlong on the fullness of his mouth, the way it seemed to always be ready to curl into a stomach-turning smirk. Daniel downed the rest of his whiskey in a single go. Then he cleared his throat, sliding the empty glass across the bar toward the bartender.

"Well I'm glad you and BB are havin' a good time," he said, surprised by his own sincerity. With marked effort he forced his glance back to Aurora. "And your concern over my social life is both appreciated and totally unnecessary. I'm doin' just fine, thank you."

Aurora watched and listened to the communication between them two men, the things that were said verbally and what was said just as loud even without words. There was an odd sort of crawling feeling down her spine that it took her a moment to identify as discomfort at being a third wheel.

For Aurora, who was very much used to turning heads and being the center of attention at such an early age, feeling left out and a little disregarded was not a common feeling (though not unknown) to her. It was one she very much disliked, especially when she was still feeling residual resentment that things were lopsided between her and Daniel. An imbalance she disliked, worse it was one that wasn't there before. Or was it?

"I wouldn't know, would I?" She sniffed at them prudishly before grabbing her drink and sliding off her stool to stride away with the steadiness of someone who was used to huffing off in heels.
