there is no man in the dream

“There is no man in the dream.”

Georgina didn't even know if the dreams were real, but even if they were, she'd never have that idyllic life. If she ever did, she'd screw it up. She'd proved that with what had happened between her and Seth. Yeah, maybe he'd slept with someone else. He'd moved on to someone else. But she'd screwed it up long before that. Or maybe it was just doomed right from the beginning. Whatever the truth there, Georgina knew happily ever after wasn't meant for her.

That was why she'd called Dante. Georgina was tired of being good. She was tired of trying to live by these morals that were getting her no one. What was the use? She'd never even the score. She'd never make up for all the bad things she'd done in her long, long life. Dante wasn't a good guy. She knew that. But she didn't deserve a good guy and right now, after seeing Seth and Maddie so happy together, she wasn't in any mood to be alone, if she ever was.

She was on her way to meet up with him when Arva had approached her. Georgina had known in an instant that she wasn’t human, but she’d also known she wasn’t demon or angel or any other creature - holy or unholy - that she’d ever felt before. Curiosity piqued, she listened to the sales pitch. It sounded too good to be true, but that just made her want to know more. “Sign me up,” she’d told the woman and it wasn’t much longer after that when she found herself standing on a stretch of beach.

Beautiful didn’t seem like an adequate word to describe the paradise around her. Georgina felt herself smiling genuinely for the first time in she couldn’t remember when. She'd changed out of her party dress and dressed for the Seattle winter, which was too much in her new surroundings, so she quickly shed her coat and draped it over her arm. She considered shedding the light sweater she wore underneath, but decided to leave it for now. The air was warm, but not so hot that she needed to lose another layer.

"Hello," she called out, maybe stupidly. She still wasn’t sure how many of Arva’s promises to believe, but curiosity drove her more than fear. She was an immortal, a succubus. There wouldn’t be much in this place that could hurt her and finding another person - human or not - would be the fastest way to learn more.

"No, it's... you don't have to apologize for that," Barry assured her. In all honesty, it was probably better for him that she wasn't Patty. As much as he loved her and wished he could make up to her for what he did, he knew that it would be a very difficult task and this wasn't really the best place for it to happen. Maybe if he decided to go back to Central City he would look her up and try to make amends.

He shook off those thoughts and focused on the woman in front of him. "Welcome to the island," he said. "We jokingly call it Sex Island, but there is a lot more to the place than that. If you want, I can show you the main camp area and answer any questions you have."

Even knowing it was out of her control, Georgina did feel badly for him. She could imagine how she would feel meeting someone who looked exactly like Seth or any number of the others who were important in her life. It had to be unsettling. It was enough knowing that she apparently had a twin out there in the universe somewhere.

"Sex Island," she laughed at the nickname. "Sounds like a fun place." Heaven for a succubus. In the past, she'd hesitated to take more than she needed to survive and to appease her bosses, but not any more. That was a part of why she'd accepted the invitation. The hope that she could have a child, despite her current inability to do so was the other.

She smiled at the offer, nodding her head slightly. "I would like that, Barry," she said, "if you're sure it wouldn't be too much of an inconvenience."

Barry smiled in return. "It's not an inconvenience at all," he assured her. He could take her to the main camp using his speed, but that wouldn't allow her to learn the path that most of the volunteers used, so he opted against it. Plus there was something that felt wrong about using his abilities with someone who looked like Patty when he hadn't been able to tell her that he was The Flash.

"There's a path that most of us use over this way," he said, ushering her towards the trees where she would start to see a few signs pointing in the direction of the main camp. "In the main camp area, we have a community center that houses a lot of the amenities we have available, and a medical center. Most people have small shelters a bit away from that place, but there has been some talk lately of building a dorm like structure."

Georgina followed him along the path, looking around them and taking note of any landmarks along the way. She listened as he described the community they had put together here and the resources that were available. All of it was good information that she would need to navigate the world she now found herself in.

"What kind of amenities are those?" she asked, looking toward him for a moment before she focused again on the path in front of him. This island did seem like paradise, but there was a primitive feel to it, too. It didn't exactly seem like a haven of technology.

At least talking about the camp and all the progress they made gave Barry something to focus on that wasn't how much Georgina looked like his ex-girlfriend. "We have electricity and running water," he said. "So far, only in the main buildings, but we're hoping we can extend that out to some of the shelters other people have built. Recently, the gods gifted us with furniture, kitchen supplies, and bathroom fixtures, so we have a fully functional kitchen and a co-ed locker room available."

It was really amazing how far they had come in less than six months. Of course, they wouldn't have been able to do it without the gods sending them the materials they needed, but obviously they were doing something right and pleasing the gods if they kept getting gifts.

Georgina nodded as he spoke, listening attentively to what he was saying. She could remember all too well what it was like to live without those modern conveniences. Having them was something she'd gotten used to in recent decades and having to give them up here in some areas might be the one drawback of this place, not that she couldn't deal with that.

"Are there a lot of people here?" she wondered. If they were all sharing a kitchen and bathroom space and it was a large number of people, that had a tendency to feel crowded, not that it wasn't anything she couldn't deal with. Mostly, she was curious.

"I'd say about four dozen or so," Barry guessed. He didn't really keep close track of how many volunteers were around, but he knew that their population had been growing lately. "The initial group of people arrived close to six months ago."

There weren't many left from that initial batch or even from the time that Barry first arrived, but it seemed like the recent folks were a little more stable which was a very good thing.

"That many?" Georgina was surprised, but not unpleasantly so. It was more people than she had rally expected to find here, maybe because this place had a very deserted island sort of feel to it, but it was good to have some variety.

"Are they all as nice as you, Barry?" she asked him, offering a grateful smile for his willingness to show her around.

Barry ducked his head in a shy smile. "I think so," he said. "We're all here for a common purpose, after all." His cheeks tinged slightly pink at the idea of sharing that common purpose with her. Would it be wrong for him to sleep with someone who looked almost identical to his ex girlfriend? It was obvious that she wasn't much like Patty at all personality wise.

"I'm sure that everyone will do what they can to make you feel welcome."

Georgina couldn't help finding the blush charming. Barry was someone she could easily see becoming friends with, maybe more, but that was why they were here, it was why she'd said yes. If first impressions were anything to go by, she thought she was really going to like it here.

"Thank you," she said, smiling again. "I appreciate you taking the time to show me around."

"I'm happy to," Barry said. Even though it was slightly awkward given her strong resemblance to Patty. They arrived at the main camp area and he stopped walking so he could point out the major spots she should be aware of. "That's the community center. You can stay there for a few days until you get a place of your own. There's a locker room and a full kitchen there."

He turned slightly. "And that's our medical center. Behind it is a small shed where we store our building materials. We do a weekly bonfire out here on Saturdays. Most people have built private shelters a bit away from this area. And if you head down that path, you'll find the gardens and the pasture where we keep our domestic animals."

Georgina looked around at everything he was pointing out to her, taking not of what he was saying. It was a good set up, even if it wasn't her apartment in Seattle. There were aspects of home she would miss, that she already did miss, but it was nice to know they weren't completely in the wilderness here.

"This is a nice community you've all built here," she commented, looking over at Barry and smiling. She nodded toward the community center where he'd said the kitchen was housed. "Do you cook as a group or does everyone pretty much fend for themselves?"

"Mostly as a group," Barry said. "At least for dinner. It works out well since we don't want to risk ruining our limited resources by having someone who can't cook burn the food."

Even though they were pretty confident the gods wouldn't ever let them starve or anything, they tried their best to be respectful. "Is there anything else I can show you?" he asked.

"That sounds smart," she agreed, laughing softly. "I have excellent takeout ordering skills. I guess I'm going to have to brush up on my cooking now that I'm here."

She wasn't horrible, at least. And maybe she could trade a salsa lesson or two for a good meal. Her cooking skills were a little rusty, but she figured she could manage.

Georgina flashed him another smile and shook her head at his question. "Unless you think there's something else I should see, I think you've given me a lot to start with."

Barry grinned in response. "I think you should be good," he said. "If you run into anything that you're not sure about, you can use your bracelet to access our on island network and chat with the other volunteers."

Some of whom would also make the same mistake he had regarding her identity, but he figured that he could try to warn them before she got on the network. "It was nice meeting you, Georgina. I'm sure I'll see you around."

[and wrap?]
