"What the actual fuck?" When Arva had showed up in Rose's jail cell and made her offer, Rose had been pretty sure she was full of shit. Everything she'd told her hadn't really seemed, you know, possible. Rose had been through a lot in the last several months that had challenged some of her core beliefs. She had found out that some of the irrefutable truths in her world were actually, well, not true anymore. This, though? She'd just kind of laughed and said "sure, okay" to the offer of being involved in this project. Get away to an island paradise where all she had to do was have some fun and maybe make a baby or do? Why not? It was better than sitting in the Court jail waiting for a trial that would probably find her guilty of a murder she hadn't committed. Rose stumbled a little as she took her first steps on the beach, still feeling the effects of the trip. She tried to push back the dizziness as she looked around her. Island paradise? Check. "Huh." Apparently it hadn't all been a joke. Either that or she was wrapped up in a really freaky dream. After scanning the area and satisfying herself she wasn't about to be attacked or anything, Rose closed her eyes and focused for a minute, trying to reach out to Lissa. For the first time in [...] since the bond had formed, she couldn't slip into Lissa's mind at all. She could still sense her. She had enough of a vague connection that she could tell her best friend was alive and unhurt, but she couldn't fully connect. It was almost like when Avery had pushed her out, except that it felt different. There was no real force blocking her from Lissa's mine. She just couldn't quite reach it. She knew there wasn't much she could do about it now that she was here, short of finding this Arva again and asking her to send her back. Back to her cell and probable execution. Maybe she'd have done that if she couldn't at least sense that Lissa was okay. Instead, she decided to do a little more exploring. Maybe even try to find an actual change of clothes, because she'd been wearing the same ones for days now and it was starting to feel pretty gross. "Start walking, Rose," she told herself and then, picking a direction, she started her trek down the beach toward what she hoped was civilization. |
