Lydia felt like this was going to be a race and she wanted to get a head start if she could manage to do that. Perhaps that was clouding her judgement, because Stiles made a good point. It was probably a better idea to wait until they could finish up decent shelters and acquaint themselves with the island a little better so that it wouldn't be too big a challenge to gather food for themselves when they needed to.
