WHO: Stiles Stilinski and Lydia Martin
WHAT: Conversation
WHEN: after sunset
WARNINGS: TBD
STATUS: Closed, Complete

All day while they worked with the other volunteers to set up shelter and find food, Stiles was mildly distracted wondering what exactly Lydia wanted to talk to him about. Back in Beacon Hills, he was convinced that he was over his ridiculous crush on her. They were friends, good friends, and that was enough for him. But since realizing that she was here, that she also volunteered to build this new society which meant having sex and making babies, he couldn't help but obsess over the idea that maybe, just maybe, he would finally get a chance with her.

Reading her conversation with Malia about finding good providers pretty much dashed any hopes he had though. What did he really have to offer anyone here? Yeah, he was smart and good at solving puzzles, but how useful were those skills in a place like this? They weren't. He couldn't hunt or fish or build things or protect anyone. It was just his luck that he would come to sex island paradise and realize that there was little to no chance of him actually getting laid.

When the sun finally set and everyone stopped working for the day, he nudged Lydia and tilted his head away from the group. It was going to take more than a few days to get things really settled, but they couldn't do much without daylight, so they may as well go for that walk and talk about whatever she wanted to discuss.

He shoved his hands in his pockets, wondering how long it would be before they figured out how to make clothes, as they walked.

Lydia's conversation with Malia had been an attempt to help the other girl, but it wasn't selfless. It had also been strategic. She hadn't been able to sleep very well the night prior, due to the lack of comfort. It was hard to get comfortable sleeping on the jungle floor and while resting her head on Stiles's shoulder and curling close at his side had made her a little less uncomfortable than trying to find comfort laying on one of her own arms curled under her head or something, it still hadn't been ideal. She hadn't meant to distract Stiles with her message to him, she just hadn't wanted to say it to him while they were walking with the others, especially when half of them could have heard it even if she whispered.

When she felt Stiles nudging her, she looked over and gave him a little smile, pushing herself up to her feet and starting away from the rest of the group at the camp and slowed to make sure Stiles was at her side. Lydia was quiet as she headed out of the camp and into the jungle. Once she was confident that they wouldn't be overheard, Lydia looked over at Stiles.

"You know the point of this project is to sustain, right?" she asked. "It's about building, sure, but it's more about sustaining, I think. Proportionately, like I said before."

Stiles nodded. "Right. I mean, we need to build a new society, but then we need to make sure it survives." It made sense. Whatever happened in whatever time and place the gods and goddesses were from had been destructive and they were looking to correct that.

"We need to figure out how to make sure we can thrive here long term." Even though they assumed that they would all eventually end up going back to their regular lives at some point, that wouldn't happen if they weren't successful.

Moving her eyes back to the front to watch where she was walking, Lydia nodded as well. "Some of us are built for survival," she said, "stronger, faster, better equipped for that. But without brain to balance the brawn, societies fall too fast," she went on.

Finally, Lydia looked over at him again. "That's why there's people here who don't know anything about survival. The gods aren't just looking for that, clearly. They want a balance. They want smart people, too. Problem solvers," she clarified a little. "And I don't know about you, but I'm not a very useful contributor to the hunting, fishing, running, jumping, climbing trees stuff."

She stopped walking. "My greatest contribution in this kind of a place, in a primitive place, is only really ever going to be my childbearing ability. So that's what I need to do best. And I think it's safe to say that, here, best and first are one in the same." She paused to let Stiles take in what she had to say, waiting to see if he'd put the puzzle together on his own or if his own insecurity would force her to break it down even further.

There was no way that Stiles was going to leap to the right conclusion based on what Lydia was saying. He followed her logic easily enough. Everything she said made sense and he felt pretty much the same way about his own useful contributions.

"So, what, you want to hurry up and get pregnant first?" he asked. "I mean, I guess that kind of makes sense, but how are you going to figure out who the best person is to hook up with? Are you going to post a personal ad like Malia did?" No, he wasn't bitter about that at all. How on Earth did he end up with her as a girlfriend if she was looking for pretty much the exact opposite of what he was?

"Yeah, pretty much," Lydia replied simply. That was the general idea. And, after talking to the goddess Arva, Lydia realized that she had information that was especially useful and she may or may not share it until she'd already conceived, just to keep ahead of the curve.

She smiled at Stiles and rolled her eyes a little. "Sweetie, do I look like I need to do that?" she asked. "No. I'm not going to run a personal ad on the network, I don't need to. She's looking for one person who all inclusively encompasses everything she's looking for. That's intimidating to people; I'll be surprised if she finds it, especially since it suggests that she's looking for a mate, whether that's her intention or not. No."

Lydia took a deep breath and sighed softly. He wasn't getting it. "Stiles...if I'm going to be the best, that means I have to be the first and I have to spread good genes. Because she's clearly looking for a physically apt candidate, the logical course of action for me would be to aim for a balancing one. So I'm not looking for that. I can find someone to build me a shelter and someone else to find me food and someone else to protect me. Right now, I need someone who will be willing to jump straight to making babies, forgoing that whole sex-for-fun thing and I need it to be someone that I know will take care of me, because it's going to happen faster than people think; I talked to the goddess of fertility."

Lydia stopped again and looked him in the eye, lifting her eyebrows. "Are you following me on this, or are you not?"

"Of course I'm following you," Stiles said. It wasn't that hard to understand where she was going with this. While Malia was busy looking for someone who could meet all of her needs, Lydia was going to find someone to knock her up so she could provide the first baby to the gods and goddesses who were in charge of the project.

He was glad that both of them had plans, since he had no idea how to make himself useful here yet. He could follow directions, sure, but he had no idea how to build things or how to hunt or fish. He certainly wasn't the strong, protective type. It was unlikely that anyone would want to pick him to procreate with.

So, basically, he was totally missing Lydia's point. "Are you going to ask Scott?" he asked. "Or that guy Reese?" They both seemed like they would be decent options to balance out Lydia's smarts on a physical level.

Lydia took another deep breath and sighed heavily, giving Stiles a long-suffering look. No, he wasn't following her at all.

"Honey," she said, lifting her eyebrows again as she put a hand on his shoulder. "Reese barely knows me. Scott doesn't care about me that much. There is exactly one person on this island right now that I know with complete and total certainty will always be right there to take care of me when I look like a blimp and can't do it myself."

Pausing again to let it hopefully sink in this time, Lydia stared back at him. Finally, she cleared her throat. "You, Stiles. I want the first time I do this to be with someone I trust. Are you in or do I have to ask Scott and settle for second best within my criteria...?"

The moment that Lydia's words sunk in, Stiles knew he should stop walking. Unfortunately, his brain didn't send that signal to his feet fast enough and, since he was too busy gaping at her to be looking where he was going, his foot caught on a root and he went sprawling to the jungle floor.

He quickly pushed himself back to his feet, brushing the dirt off of himself. "You... me... baby... what?"

Lydia opened her mouth to warn him to watch his step only to end up being too late. Stiles went down and Lydia took a deep breath, lifting her chin to look up at the sky as if to say this is what you gave me to work with, Arva, just remember that; this was your choice, before sighing and looking back at him when he got back to his feet.

"I want to be the first to have a baby on the island and I want my partner to be someone who will take care of me while I'm pregnant. I want it to be someone I know I can trust and who I know cares about me, so that narrows it down to you."

Looking back at him, she lifted her eyebrows. "You're smart, you're funny, you're conventionally attractive, and you're a good problem solver. We'd make a physically attractive and intelligent baby, which would be a hell of a lot better a contribution than anything Malia will come up with based on her current criteria, which will make my offspring superior. I'm smart enough that if I have to settle for Scott, my IQ can make up the difference, more than likely, but I'd rather not have to compromise that. So...are you in, or are you out? And please try not to fall over again. Once is an accident; twice, I second guess myself."

"I'm in," Stiles said. "I'm so in."

Because Lydia just said that he was attractive. And that she wanted to have his baby. And apparently this place really was paradise and OH MY GOD he was going to get to have sex with Lydia Martin. He felt a bit weak in the knees at that realization, but managed to stay on his feet this time.

There was no question that Stiles would dote on her as much as possible while she was pregnant. They may not have any creature comforts here, but he would do whatever he could to make her as comfortable as possible.

Pleased, Lydia smiled and nodded. "Good. Ground rules, then," she said, holding up one finger. "Rule number one: this is just sex for the sake of conception. This isn't a thing..."

She paused before continuing and holding up a second finger. "Two: I'm still probably going to have sex with other men afterward until I'm too disgusting for anyone to want to sleep with because I still need someone to build me a shelter and bring me food and make sure I don't end up dead, since we've established that your forte is intellectual, like mine, and neither of us is fit to do that for me."

Lydia held up a third and final finger, "and three: you have to promise that you can look at this from a clinical standpoint, because I want what I want, but I don't want it at the expense of our friendship. That will always come first. ...still with me...?"

Stiles nodded. He certainly wasn't expecting any kind of commitment from Lydia, or anyone else. And honestly, for as long as he wanted her, he wouldn't want a commitment in a place like this. As much as he wanted to have sex with Lydia, he also wanted to have sex with other people too and couldn't blame her for wanting to do the same.

"So we only get to do it until you get pregnant? How will we even know if you get pregnant? I mean, there aren't any tests around here or anything, right? And what about raising the baby? We'll do that together, I assume."

Okay. Lydia was taking that nod as an agreement to her terms and conditions which, as far as she was concerned, actually worked to both of their benefits, anyway.

"I told you, I spoke to the fertility goddess. If we want to get pregnant, we will. The pregnancy will last three months — yeah, you heard me right — and then we can offer Arva the child and she'll raise it so that we don't have to. I'm not ready to be a parent, I just want to pull my own weight in his place," Lydia explained. "And I didn't tell you any of that, all right? Because I don't feel like sharing it at the moment, I'm only telling you because we're going into this together. Okay?"

"Wait, seriously? We just... want to get pregnant and we do? And if we want to have sex without getting pregnant, we won't?" That went against the teaching of every health and sex ed class Stiles ever attended, but it certainly made things easier than needing to worry about condoms or pills or anything else.

And if they didn't have to raise the baby in these primitive conditions, even better. "So we only get to have sex once?"

Pressing her lips together and nodding, Lydia shrugged. "According to Arva, yeah, that's exactly how it works," she explained.

Somehow, she felt like there might be some disappointment in the making if she answered that question with a short-run honest answer. "To make this baby," she prefaced, "yes. ...and if the experience of shrinking a full term pregnancy down to three months isn't completely traumatizing, then...maybe another time somewhere down the line," she decided as she said it. "Is that okay with you?" she asked a little cautiously.

It was definitely disappointing, but it was also one hundred percent more sex than he ever expected to have with Lydia, so he'd take it. And maybe if he did a really good job, she'd want to do it again just for fun.

"Sure," Stiles said with a shrug. "I mean, if you ever just want to do it for fun, it's not like I'll say no."

And there it was. Lydia gave Stiles a small smile and reached over to hold his jaw lightly with one hand. In her mind, Stiles was a lot more like a brother than he was anything else. In Allison's wake, he'd become her best friend, whether he realized it or not. For Lydia, this was strictly clinical and strategic. But she wasn't going to come out and say that in so many words; Stiles wasn't stupid. He'd figure it out.

"Come on, sweetie," she said. "Let's go find somewhere not completely in plain sight. ...unless you'd rather wait until a little later in the week so that we're a little more established in camp and everything...either is fine."

Woah. She wanted to do it right now? Part of Stiles was totally down for that. But his brain actually managed to drown out that part and remind him that he had very little practical experience in this area and should probably try to get some advice first.

"We should probably wait at least a few more days," he said. "See if we can't get some more comfortable accommodations set up."

Lydia felt like this was going to be a race and she wanted to get a head start if she could manage to do that. Perhaps that was clouding her judgement, because Stiles made a good point. It was probably a better idea to wait until they could finish up decent shelters and acquaint themselves with the island a little better so that it wouldn't be too big a challenge to gather food for themselves when they needed to.

She smiled and her hand fell away from his face to take his in her own, giving it a squeeze. "See? Look at you, taking care of me already. I made a good choice. ...should we go back, then?"

Stiles was really tempted to lean in and kiss her when she took his hand, but he restrained himself. Her ground rules had been pretty specific and he figured kissing was off the table. "Yeah, we probably should," he said, squeezing her hand back.

Taking a deep breath and letting it out softly, Lydia smiled again, giving his hand one more squeeze before letting go. "Okay, let's go."
