We haven't had a story telling bonfire in a while. So tonight's post will be 1000 points for a starter that tells a cultural story. This can be something personal or something general about your character's world.

She sat for a moment, surprised at his question. "I've never thought about it," she said. "in some ways I can identify with the Firebird. It really didn't have any freedom, it was captured and used to make others happy. I went through a time in my life when I was trapped, not to make others happy but to ...." she didn't want to say kill them although that was what she had done. "make their lives miserable."

A big part of her life had been making people unhappy? That definitely didn't sound like a good thing.

"Is that why you came here, then? So that you could make people happy for a change?"

It made perfect sense to him.

"I should probably rephrase that," she said. "I didn't have a choice in what I did. I feel like I have to spend my life making up for that and it's not easy." It was why she'd gone to work for SHIELD, become an Avenger, worked with Nick Fury. She had to atone for what she'd done. Even if that was impossible.

"I came here to try and make a better place, I guess. And Arva offered me a chance at something that I couldn't have a home so I came here. I'm glad I did." While she was no closer to being a mother, she was learning how to exist in a world where she didn't have to fight, she didn't have to worry or wonder what might be sneaking up behind her. It was peaceful and it surprised Natasha how much she enjoyed it.

"It sounds like a good reason to me," he said sincerely. "That's probably why Arva chose you, because you wanted to do good. I mean, I don't think anyone here's perfect. We've all made mistakes. But the desire to atone for what we've done, and to fix things...well, that's got to be worth something."

He cocked his forehead.

"Do you like it here, then?"

Natasha hadn't looked at it this way but maybe it was true. Maybe that's why Arva had chosen her. "I don't know. I hope so. I really do feel like I have to make up for some of the things I've done." She'd done her best so far but there sere things she'd had to do that Natasha was sure she could never atone for.

"I do like it here. It's forced me to get out of my own head more and I've met some really nice people. What about you? Are you happy here?"

To anyone who had suffered the things that Eight had, happiness was a very difficult thing to understand. He had been happy once, for a short time, in Nine's apartment in Chicago, when they'd all been together. But that had been such a fleeting moment.

"I - " He paused. "I think I am. I like being here. I like helping the gods accomplish their goal. I like having sex." And he blushed a little at that. "I guess I'm happy?"

She smiled. "Yeah, the sex is nice. I won't deny that." His blush amused her but she thought it was cute. "It's a beautiful place too. I mean you don't get a view like this very many places in the world."

In his memory, Lorien was something like this. Or had been, long ago. But who knew how much of that was reality, and how much of that was romanticized? There was no way to know.

"That's for sure. It's beautiful here. I'm enjoying the peace."

That was something he hadn't had much of in his life.

"I lived in a lot of different places back home. I'm not sure I could say exactly which one was my actual home. I guess Russia would be. That was where I was born anyway." And had spent a lot of her formative years but those weren't good memories. Natasha had lived so many lives under so many names that she couldn't always keep up with them all.

That was something that Eight could understand. He'd been through the same thing - to the point he couldn't even remember the name that his parents had given him - although he wished he could.

"Maybe this place will become a home for all of us."

"I hope so. It's already starting to feel that way." Natasha was surprised at her words but it was true. It did feel like home to her, she had friends, she had work to do, it was very different from what she was used to but it was the first peace she'd had in a very long time and she liked that.

"That's good, though, right?" He asked. "I mean, if we're going to be here for a while, it should feel like home."

He stood, stretching a while.

"I've got to get up early and weed the garden, but it was nice talking to you." He said with a smile. "Let's talk again sometime?"

"You're right," she agreed. "It should feel like home." Natasha looked up at him and smiled. "Have a good night and yeah, I'd like that."
