We haven't had a story telling bonfire in a while. So tonight's post will be 1000 points for a starter that tells a cultural story. This can be something personal or something general about your character's world.

The last time there had been a story telling bonfire, Natasha had not attended. She hadn't been on the island very long and was still trying to find her way. Not to mention the fact that she didn't feel the need to tell anyone her own personal story.

Tonight though she decided to go but instead of a personal story, she chose to share one of her favorite folk stories from home. The story of
The Firebird. She was sure she'd left out a few details but when she was done she took a breath and glanced around the group gathered at the bonfire. "So that's my story," she said. "it's not about me but I do have red hair so maybe that counts for something."

Eight listened to the story in silence. He had always loved stories, perhaps because they were all that he had left from home. But the ending wasn't quite what he expected, and actually kind of blinked a little in surprise. It seemed to him that Prince Ivan had been rather terrible and selfish, and that he hadn't necessarily deserved a happy ending.

But stories were what they were, and they certainly said something about both the author and the teller.

"Do you see yourself in that story at all?" He asked. Because he had a feeling it could be incredibly telling if she did.

She sat for a moment, surprised at his question. "I've never thought about it," she said. "in some ways I can identify with the Firebird. It really didn't have any freedom, it was captured and used to make others happy. I went through a time in my life when I was trapped, not to make others happy but to ...." she didn't want to say kill them although that was what she had done. "make their lives miserable."

A big part of her life had been making people unhappy? That definitely didn't sound like a good thing.

"Is that why you came here, then? So that you could make people happy for a change?"

It made perfect sense to him.

"I should probably rephrase that," she said. "I didn't have a choice in what I did. I feel like I have to spend my life making up for that and it's not easy." It was why she'd gone to work for SHIELD, become an Avenger, worked with Nick Fury. She had to atone for what she'd done. Even if that was impossible.

"I came here to try and make a better place, I guess. And Arva offered me a chance at something that I couldn't have a home so I came here. I'm glad I did." While she was no closer to being a mother, she was learning how to exist in a world where she didn't have to fight, she didn't have to worry or wonder what might be sneaking up behind her. It was peaceful and it surprised Natasha how much she enjoyed it.

Jaime liked these bonfires. She liked meeting the people here with her and she loved the conversations that could come up. Tonight was a story night, however, and she leaned back to think about it for a few minutes. When her turn came up she smiled and started to tell one of her favorite little stories.

She recited the short tale of the Heron and the Hummingbird, a good ole Georgia folklore tale. "These are the kind of things I grew up with." she said in explination.

It was a cute little story, Eddie thought. He'd always loved the stories that explained the world around them...stories that the world had turned to before science provided more accurate - but far more mundane - explanations. There was so much more color in thinking of the birds as creatures who had won a race that would define their existence than it was to think of them simply in having evolved that way. The world knew so much, but he couldn't help but wonder if it had lost much, as well.

When Jaime was done with her story, he looked up at her and clapped politely. He had stories of his own, but really didn't feel like telling them. They all led back to things that he'd come here to forget.

"So where'd you grow up?" He asked.

"Oh the South mainly. But we wandered around for pagents and stuff, but mostly the South." Jaime smiled warmly. She tucked a red stand behind her ear and grinned a bit.

"my grandmother liked to pass on those kinds of tales. My mother didn't like it much." But that was mostly because she hadn't wanted Jaime to follow in her grandmother's footsteps. Too bad she did anyways."what about you?"

"Oh Iowa, I've been there a few times. Montana too. They're interesting places." a lot of ghosts had followed her through most of the states she'd been to, though. So her kind of interesting might be a little different.

"Ah well, honey, I'm good around lots of people and I can be that way for just about all of us." she grinned wickedly. "I grew up on stage and have my own TV show and did live tours, too."

Luke had attended the bonfires as often as possible. He hadn't actually told his story at one of them before. He wasn't sure if people would be interested. Then he learned that he was actually famous and that most people knew about him and his story. While disturbing he was growing used to it now.

He listened to the two stories that were told, intrigued by it before piping up. "Would people actually be interested in hearing my story or do all of you know it so well that there's no point?" he asked. "I still find it incredibly creepy though that you all know me," he said with a shrug.

"I'd like to hear your story," Bri said. The others may have known it well, but coming from a time when all theater was still live, she had no idea about his movies, or even what a movie really was.

She was also eager to learn about the other people who lived here, since they only had each other both as company, and for survival. Despite the fact she's slept with Luke, she realized that she didn't really know that much about him.

Unlike many of them, Malia wasn't shy about telling her story. She wasn't afraid to tell the people here about the things that had happened to her because she wasn't ashamed, and these were the people she was going to spend the rest of her life with. Maybe. So she wanted them to know her.

She stood before the fire, watching it curiously and a little nervously.

"I'm going to tell you the story of how I met the love of my life," she said simply. "It's kind of weird, but it's true. So I'd been living in the woods for years stuck in coyote form. Stiles and Scott figured that out and found me, and managed to change me back into a person. They thought they were doing me this huge favor even though I really didn't want them to do it at all. I liked being a coyote. It was safe. I was used to it. I didn't have to do math." She paused. "Anyway, they changed me back and I tried to explain to my father - my adopted father - what had happened and he didn't believe me. He thought I was crazy, so he sent me to Eichen House, which is the insane asylum in Beacon Hills. That place sucked. Well, a few days after I got there, Stiles showed up. He was possessed by an evil Japanese fox demon thingy and thought it would be safer there, even though it wasn't. But that's another story. After I punched him in the face for assuming that he knew what was best for me, we worked together and figured out a way to get into the basement because there was information there that we wanted to learn about the Nogitsune. We ended up on a couch and one thing led to another and yeah, that was both of our first times."

Malia and Finnick

The baby was due in two weeks. And of course the due date was just an estimate. The baby could come before then. In fact it could almost be any day now, a thought which made Finnick almost dizzy with anxiety, so he pushed it away. He almost hadn't come to the bonfire, wanting to stay close to Chloe in case she needed him, but they had the comm bracelets so he was always only a call away.

Plus, the bonfires were important. They made their community stronger, which was important to Finnick, so he made a point of going.

He wandered around and mingled a bit, listening to various people tell their stories, until he heard Malia's. It was a surprisingly sweet story about her and Stiles, but it still had that edge she always had. He smiled when he heard how she had punched Stiles, but then later had sex with him. That was Malia in a nutshell, he thought.

He sat down beside her, smiling. "That's a really nice story. I never knew you and Stiles met in an asylum."

"Well, I mean, technically we met when Scott changed me back in the woods. But that's when we really got go know each other yeah." People had told her before that maybe she shouldn't be so open about that, and it was really something that she didn't understand. Why not be open?

Living eight years in the woods also meant that she didn't have the stigma surrounding mental illness that humans did. They'd been sick. They'd gone to the asylum until things had gotten better, then she'd left. How was that any different than going to a regular hospital? Malia didn't understand.

"It was really wonderful if it hadn't been so awful too. Just like...a few moments after we finished, the Nogitsune got Stiles again."

Malia and Finnick
[info]dist4_finnick
2016-08-14 06:12 pm UTC (link)
They did have a stigma against mental illness in District 4, and they also had very limited ways to treat it. Basically the family just dealt with it and the person with the problem either got better or not. If they got bad enough that they were a serious danger to others they were sometimes sent away...and usually never seen again.

But none of that had much to do with how Finnick related to Malia's story. He knew that she wasn't mentally ill. She just wasn't used to being human.

He also didn't really understand about the Nogitsune. Although they were supernatural, the werewolves here were a physical phenomenon, something he could see with his own eyes. Possession by a spirit was something else.

"Were you in love with him from the start?"

"No," she said. "Actually at first I hated him and wanted him to die. He'd made me back into a human and made me face things that I didn't want to face. That wasn't cool. Not even a little. But then we got to know each other a little better, and realized kind of that he was just stupid, that he hadn't meant to hurt anyone. And he was sweet. And I started to kind of like him, you know? And then I wanted to see what sex was like and he was willing."

She shrugged.

"I didn't start loving him for a long time."

Storytelling. Lovely.

It wasn't that Lustre didn't have stories to tell, it was that the stories she had to tell were terrible. Like, really, really terrible. She hadn't really realized the extent of how terrible they were until she had been here for a while and realized that what was normal and accepted in her world wasn't necessarily normal and expected in another.

But it was what it was, and she wasn't going to hide away the things he'd done. Well, not all of them, anyway. If she got into detail about some things, she'd be telling a story that was Finnick's, too. And that was something she wouldn't do.

But she could tell about her Games.

"I decided I wanted to be a tribute when I was about five," she started. "In District One, there wasn't really a greater honor than being Reaped for the Hunger Games, and we won a lot. One was one of what they called the 'Career' districts, which meant we had the time and money to put a lot more into training than the poorer districts where everyone had to work all the time just to survive. So basically, at the age of five, I started training how to kill. I was sixteen when I was reaped, and killed three other potential tributes just to get into the Games. That's a normal thing in the Career Districts - you have to kill even to get chosen in the Reaping, because everyone wants to do it. Everyone wants to be the one to bring honor back to their district."

She hugged her knees, looking down.

"And I guess I did. I mean, I won. It was a mountainous arena that year. Lots of cliffs and such. I still don't know how they did that, but they did. Several kids died in rock slides, or falling off of cliffs. I killed twelve of them myself."

Her voice was cold, distant, as if remembering something that someone else had done.

Sitting beside her, Cisco listened. He'd read the books and seen the movies but he hadn't known Lustre's own personal story. She didn't talk about it and he didn't want to ask. As she spoke, he watched her and he could see how hard this was for her.

He reached out and took her hand, pulling it off her knees but saying nothing. He wasn't sure what to say but he wanted her to know that he cared, that he understood and that he was there for her, however she wanted him to be. Cisco couldn't imagine what living in her world must have been like.

There was no way he could possibly know how much that tiny gesture meant to her. She turned to him quickly, and squeezed his hand back tightly. She'd always felt so alone recounting those things, and in that simple squeeze of her hand...she didn't anymore.

She met his eyes, her own full of gratitude, and...maybe a little something else.

She scooted a little closer and leaned her head on his shoulder, putting her free hand on his leg.

He placed a gentle kiss on top of her head, knowing how much strength is had taken for her to tell that story. There was no doubt a lot more to it and she'd tell it when she was ready and there would be no judgement from him. She hadn't had a choice, it was the only life she knew and he understood that.

"You okay?" he said quietly. "I know that had to be hard for you. If you don't feel like you can say more, don't worry about it."

Peter watched the crew around him, he wasn't all that good at telling stories really. It had never been his strong suit, he'd always been pretty shy when he was younger, and only recently had begun to really come out of his shell. Still, people wanted this to be a story sharing experience, and frankly he didn't really mind. He'd been through a lot as Spider-Man, but then again he was never really entirely sure which one was a great story or not.

"Now this is a story, all about how, my life got flipped-turned upside down. And I'd like to take a minute, just sit right there, and I'll tell you how I became the ... Spider-Man." Peter frowned thinking a moment, "That didn't rhyme, Will would be disappointed. Uh, so that's how I learned to rap. From Will Smith and the Fresh Prince of Bel Air. So uh, yea field trip when I was fifteen really started the downward spiral. We went to Oscorp, and I was bitten by a radioactive spider. It infused its DNA with me, and I got powers somehow. Scientifically, it really doesn't make any real sense..."

He laughed and then frowned, "I was selfish with it at first, though. I went on to try and gain fame, fortune; I joined a wrestling league, it's where I got the first title of 'The Amazing Spider-Man'. I let it consume me, I let my own greed and arrogance take apart of me. And I decided to let a criminal go when I could have stopped him with my powers. i felt like it wasn't my responsibility, or place, and acted like I didn't care. He was a burglar, and I could have stopped him..."

He shook his head then shrugged, looking up with a frown, "That same man later killed my Uncle. The man who had been caring for me. Who raised me since I was six. He was/is dead because of me. ...It was after that day that I decided to wear the mask to be a hero, to be Spider-Man, because I didn't want that to happen to anyone else. And I owed my Uncle, I had a responsibility because of my power."

She didn't understand why not rhyming was bad or who Will Smith was, but it didn't seem to matter as Peter got into the details. When he reached the end her heart went out to him. Obviously that had deeply affected him.

Peter laughed and looked towards Lailah, his hands wrapping together and his head tilting to the side with a light smirk, shrugging, a shake of his head suggesting he was waving off the suggestion, "Maybe I shouldn't, but I do. And I will. You see, it's been on my mind since I was 16. It's the single most important driving force in what I do; I do blame myself, and I have to, it was my fault. My selfishness, my arrogance, my ignorance, it all lead to my Uncle's death."

He then looked up at her and smiled softly, "But it's not something that haunts me, it's just motivation now. To be a better person. I may sound depressed while talking about it, but it's just because I miss him so much. I'm not depressed though, I've learned to be strong in the face of it all."
