The bonfire last week had been kind of a disaster for Finnick. He had freaked out so much over Charles' revelation that he had barely noticed that Amanda was sitting next to him, nor had he noticed them growing unusually close. So when he came to this week's bonfire, while the disaster of last week was still somewhat on his mind, he didn't associated Amanda with it.

He'd just avoided Charles all week. He wasn't terribly angry with him, although he did wish that Charles had said something sooner, he understood why he hadn't. Finnick could hardly blame Charles for having a power he'd been born with, but that didn't mean he was completely comfortable around him either.

He saw Amanda sitting alone and he decided to go and chat with her for a bit. He hadn't really talked to her much lately, and she was on his mind right now because he'd been working on the chess set. He walked over to her with a casual smile. "Is this seat taken?" He asked, indicating the patch of sand next to her.

Although she started started a bit interally, pulse jumping a bit at the worry Finnick might have thought she'd kept Charles' confidence with bad motives, seeing that he didn't look too much the worse for wear made Amanda smile. She might have known Finnick any better than anyone else here, but she knew he was kind to most everyone who was new so even if he wasn't a sort of academic she wasn't as intimidated by him as she was by some other people.

"No, sit down," she beamed warmly. "How are you? I haven't run into you in a while." Of course, he'd been building while she'd been taking care of plants. Both useful, but she wasn't going to pretend her lack of upper body strength or some other skills didn't keep her a little bit separate from other people. Well, that and several other things.

He sat down beside her with a smile. "I'm fine. I've been keeping busy, but everything is going well." He really was fine. Things had been a bit more complicated lately, but overall he was still happy about Chloe, the baby, and his life here in general.

He sat down beside her with a smile. "How are you? I was thinking about you the other day. I'm almost done with the chess pieces."

"I'm good. Working in the gardens has been a new experience for me, but it's rewarding." Which was true, actually. She wouldn't have expected it when she came here, but helping with something with such clear results that was good for everyone felt nice.

While she'd mentioned it to Charles, she wasn't sure with everything else if Finnick had still been working on the chess pieces and wouldn't have been bothered if he'd set the project aside, the fact he'd actually kept her mind did register pleasantly. "Oh, yeah, that's great. You let me know when, I'll be happy to beat you." She was actually grinning wide at that; she didn't have much she could boast about so easily, but Nick had never been able to beat her, she knew anyone else would be in for a challenge.

"Gardening does sound rewarding. Someday when I have a bit more time I'd like to learn more about it. Sewing too. I guess I just want to know how to do everything." He laughed. He knew he couldn't do everything himself and it was alright to rely on others for some things, but that didn't stop him from wanting to know how. "Maybe there could be some kind of skill exchange. Different people could take turns teaching different things."

"I have no doubt you'll beat me easily. I'm not very good." Finnick was good at tactics in real world situations, but for him that didn't translate to the symbolic thinking of a chess board. "But I don't mind losing. Wait, that's not true, actually. I hate losing. I'm extremely competitive and it drives me crazy. But it will be good for and maybe I'll learn something."

"Mmm, yeah. I thought about trying my hand at sewing myself, but since I didn't really have any fine motor skills for so long, it seemed better to leave that to other people for the time being. Maybe when I feel more settled in the garden. It's been a really long time since I've actually had so much to learn. It's a little overwhelming, but...nice." She shrugged a little self-deprecatingly; she didn't mind so much reminding people of what her past had been, but it was always frustrating to be reminded of what her body had kept her from knowing, and not just in bed. "But you've obviously got a bit more to work on yourself than the rest of us. Your house is in good shape now, right?" She hadn't kept on that, distracted by her own past until recently.

She nodded at Finnick's comment about skill exchange. "There was a saying, from a people I studied. The translation isn't perfect, but it roughly equated to 'from one, many may learn'. I'd like to think we'll be putting that into practice far more than we might have back home. We all brought something with us that at least one other person might not know." While she wasn't sure how much her engineering experience would ever translate--she wasn't sure they'd ever reach the stars themselves, considering how long it had taken humanity when they had more advanced tools at their fingertips--Charles had started to make her feel like she did have more to offer, besides the knowledge of living in a body that had been less than normative.

She did laugh at Finnick's comment about being competitive. "Me too. Well, at least when it comes to chess. It was one of the few things that some people thought of as a real competition that I could actually even do, let alone excel at. I won't let you win, but I won't actually try to clean the floor with you either, at least not at first . It's been awhile since I've actually played with anyone who wasn't really experienced, maybe...since I was sixteen?" It didn't sound like boasting for her; it actually said something about how different she'd been back then. Because by sixteen she was in college and chess had taken a backseat to her degree.

Finnick nodded. "Sewing takes a lot of fine motor skill and a lot of practice. Most of the people I know who are really good at it started to learn as children. I think it might be easier with the machine, though, and certainly faster. That's the part I'd be the most interested in learned someday. But yes, there are so many people here with so many different skills, I'm sure we can all learn from each other."

"The house is coming along." He sighed "It's not quite done yet. We've had a few setbacks, but we still have plenty of time, and it should be done well before the baby comes." At least he hoped so. They had plenty of other things to do to get ready for the baby after the house was done.

The defining competitive event of Finnick's life had taken place several years earlier, when he was fourteen, and it had been a gradual process for him to realize that not all competition was life and death like the games had been. "I was competitive in everything. If I lost a race I would make my brothers race me again until I won." He laughed, "But now that I'm grown up I'm trying to convince myself that life isn't a race."

"Mmm, yeah, I'm usually pretty good with machines, at least knowing how to repair them, so that's a possibility. I've still got a feeling the most I'd be making for awhile would be a mess of my hands." It was getting easier to laugh at herself now; the fact that no one here had ever made her feel like any less of a person for the body she'd had before was helping, even if it was hard to believe no one was seeing her ventilator or a hulking metal chair when they looked at her. "I might ask someone to show me one of these days, I really hate being without a real project all the time."

Well, she supposed sex could be considered a project around here, but that was...different.

She sighed softly, nodding. "Sometimes I really wonder what Arva was thinking asking me here, because if you were needing help repairing an old spaceship I could pitch in without even thinking about it, but past some real basics that sort of architecture is far beyond me. I'm glad you're getting along all right, though. You and Chloe." She hadn't spoken to Chloe as much as she'd liked, but she knew the other woman was technically minded like her, so the fact she was making something here was comforting.

Amanda chuckled at Finnick's talk of competition. "Oh, you didn't see me in chess club. I was president my sophomore year of high school for a reason. You want to see a teenage boy's ego shrink, watch him lose a game of chess to a girl who can't move her hands." She liked boasting about that; it had been annoying to have to parrot her moves to someone else who'd have to actually move the pieces, but it had always been worth it in the end. "I don't know if I'd say I was really competitive, but I was trying to prove a point. I found other ways to do that later on, and I actually stopped even playing for fun very often. That's sort of a shame, now that I think about it." She'd played with Nick but that had been more about trying to flirt and failing miserably.

"Hey, being good with machines could come on pretty useful around her. We have the sewing machine and power tools other stuff and some of it's bound to break eventually. I'd have no idea how to fix any of it, so it will be great to have someone who might be able to."

He smiled at the mention of Chloe, as he usually did. "Yeah, everything is great with Chloe." He had certainly never expected to fall in love on Sex Island, but he had and he was happier than he'd ever been in his life.

"That's awesome." he said when she started talking about chess club and competition. "If you're good at something it's fun to show it off. And good for you putting those boys in their place." He smiled, enjoying seeing this side of her. "If you enjoy it you should keep playing."
