Phryne was happy with how things were going here. She was slightly surprised she had managed to be talked into helping dig the sewage system but at the same time she felt like she needed to do something else to help around. There wasn't much to do with the Med Centre and she didn't want to make clothes, that would end in a disaster. So, she was going to dig dirt for people to get plumbing, something they desperately needed.

If it worked she hopes they could get some hot water. God, she missed hot water. The conversation on the comms about the bath hadn't helped and now she was craving it. That and a good glass of alcohol.

Dressed simply, she ended up at the bonfire like she did each weekend. Nodding to a couple of people she recognised, she helped herself to a coconut of water and took a seat on one of the logs to see who would turn up. She was one of the first people there which was surprising and the others were talking to someone already.

Still shaken up by his conversation with Natasha the other day, Bruce made it a point to seek out a woman to talk to when he arrived at the weekly bonfire. Was he developing feelings for Maria? If so, he needed to figure out how to stop them. There was nothing good that could come of them, not in a place like this, and not with his history. He also doubted that Maria would be interested in any sort of commitment with him. Especially not with so many better options here. He was honestly surprised that she agreed to let him father her baby.

"Evening," he said, managing a small smile when he joined the young woman who was sitting alone. "You're Phryne, right?" He thought they had spoken on the network, but didn't recall meeting her in person yet. "I'm Bruce."

Phryne nodded to Bruce as he approached. They'd talked about the Med Centre but with how quiet things were she hadn't done much with it. Honestly her expertise wasn't of much use here though she would keep an eye on things in case she was ever needed for some reason or another.

"I am, good to meet you in person at last. I suppose I should have dropped by the med center to say hi but so many people to meet," she said with a grin.

"No need to apologize," Bruce assured her, smiling a bit wider at her grin. "Even with our small population, it takes some time to get to know everyone. We're all busy here." For a variety of definitions of the word 'busy' even, depending on the person. "At least we've gotten a chance to chat now."

She was attractive in an offbeat sort of way and Bruce was glad that he'd made the effort to speak with her this evening. He wasn't sure if she'd be interested in a hookup, but even if that wasn't an option, he was happy to get to know her better. All his years keeping to himself because of his fears over the Other Guy were still lingering and he needed to work harder to overcome those instincts and be more social here.

"That's true there is an awful lot to do here. It's a matter of of just finding something we enjoy and are good at," she shrugged. "Not much to do with the medical side at the moment and I don't know what else there is for me to do?" she asked "Apart from meet people and have sex," she added with a small laugh. "Everyone here has such interesting stories it seems a waste not to hear them all and learn what I can about them."

Bruce raised an eyebrow a bit at her statement. "Well, you could learn a new skill," he suggested. "Like gardening or tending the animals or sewing." There were any number of small things that needed to be done to keep their fledgling society going and they weren't necessarily things that required any sort of great skill level.

"Of course, having sex is still important," he added. "And obviously it's something the gods are encouraging us to do." At least the aphrodisiac pastries seemed to indicate such.

"That's true," she agreed with a nod. "Sewing and I don't get on," she shuddered. "I had to learn it at school and I failed absolutely miserably. Though that was more needlepoint than making clothes. I can do basic maintenance sewing so perhaps basic stuff but I don't know. We'll see what I can come up with," she admitted.

"It would seem so and it seems sex and babies are the main purpose of this island. The rest is to support us in doing that," she mused to him.

"Well, I'd say that keeping ourselves fed, sheltered, and clothed is really the main purpose," Bruce countered. "Otherwise, there is no reason to have babies. But the procreation aspect is important to sustain our new society long term."

It was interesting to him how everyone had a different aspect of the project that they seemed to focus on. Arva definitely managed to gather a wide variety of volunteers. Which was a good thing, because it forced them to really work together as a community.

"True," Phryne conceded. "I focused on that as Arva promoted it as repopulating the island," she shrugged. "Not that I ever plan on having children but each to their own. The fact that we can give the children away is something at least."

Prior to coming here, Bruce hadn't been able to father a child. The ability to do so, even though he was going to allow Arva to raise said child, was ultimately what led to him accepting the invitation. He knew that not everyone shared that mentality though. "Do you think you'll contribute to the project by giving Arva a child in the future?" he asked.

It didn't really matter that much if she didn't want to, but it made him curious about her motives for accepting Arva's offer if she was adamantly against it.

"I don't know. I don't like the thought of what pregnancy does to our bodies but three months is better than nine. I will admit that," she shrugged. "At the moment no but I might change my mind in the future. Do you want children?" he asked curiously.

"The human body is incredibly resilient," Bruce said. He'd seen the results of more than one pregnancy during his time on the run and the women in the countries where he hid didn't have the luxury of taking months off after childbirth. They got right back to doing what needed to be done while they recovered and cared for an infant. It was really impressive. "But we all have to make the choices that are right for us."

He smiled when she asked if he wanted children. "Do you know Maria?" he asked. "We're expecting together. We plan to allow Arva to raise the child."

"True," she nodded. "Medicine and health care has come a long way too which helps. The hormones and cravings are not appealing though," she admitted.

"I don’t but that's wonderful for the two of you. There's a lot of people having them at the moment."

Bruce nodded. "There are, yes. Which is a good thing. Hopefully that and the other progress we're making will please the gods." Because the last thing he wanted was for the gods to get pissed and make it pour rain again. Or worse.

"Hopefully," Phryne agreed with a nod. "I haven't seen anything to indicate that they don't like what we've been doing though?" she asked curiously.

"We had a few days of pretty ugly rain a while back," Bruce said. "And we haven't gotten any gifts from the gods in a few weeks." Those were all things that were out of the ordinary and might indicate that the gods were displeased.

"That sounds horrible," she frowned. "Still a good excuse to snuggle with people but then one doesn't really need an excuse for that," she grinned at him. "That's true we haven't have we? I hope they come again soon."

Bruce nodded his agreement. "I'm hopeful as well," he said. "We're still moving forward with our progress and there are several new pregnancies, so hopefully that will appease the gods."

Even if they didn't get anything else, they should be okay with what they had, but it was nice to get the little bonuses. "I should probably get going," he said. "Need to check on Maria. But it was nice chatting with you." Yes, he had initially approached her with the idea of maybe making a move, but ultimately, he decided he couldn't and that was something he knew he needed to figure out soon.

"Here's hoping," she agreed. "Of course, I wish the two of you luck," she said with a smile. "I'll see you around."
