Even though they hadn't spoken in person, Sydney paid attention to the network and knew who all of the other volunteers were. She smiled when Nick walked up and nodded for him to sit next to her. The log where she was perched had plenty of room for another person. It might not be the most comfortable seat in the world, but it served its purpose.

"Hi," she said. "I'm Sydney. You're Nick, right?" He was cute. Really cute. And now that she considered herself a sexually liberated woman, the idea of branching out with her experiences was appealing. Not that she was going to throw herself at him, of course. She had far more decorum than that. But she would at least consider the possibility.

"That's me," Nick said as he took the invitation to sit down. She seemed sweet. Nice even. Which meant he had to tone down his personality a bit. Be less...him. So he leaned his elbows on his knees and smiled at her.

"Nice to meet you, Sydney." His smile tightened. "How is it I haven't met you yet?"

Sydney laughed a little. "Bad luck, I guess," she joked. "I spend most of my time working in the garden. And you seem more like a construction type of guy." That would definitely be part of the reason they hadn't met. Plus she got the sense that he was far more accepting of the 'sex' part of Sex Island faster than she was. That might have also had something to do with why they hadn't met. She was still somewhat shy around men in social settings, but she was definitely doing better.

"Are you enjoying your time here?" she asked. "You've been here about as long as I have, I think." Which definitely made it stranger that they hadn't met, but there were enough people coming and going that she supposed it wasn't entirely unusual.

"Yeah, you don't want me near a plant," he said with a chuckle. "I have a black thumb. I even killed a jade plant once." That was a pretty difficult feat, actually.

"I am, actually." Nick nodded as he tried to keep a smug smile from his face, but there was that about his eyes that didn't reflect his pride. "Anyplace that doesn't have someone trying to capture me for experimentation is a plus for me."

"Oh? What kind of experiments do people want to run on you?" Sydney asked, her eyes a little wide at the thought. She had a bit of experience in protecting people from that sort of thing, it was one of the reasons that the Alchemists worked so closely with the Moroi to keep their existence a secret from society at large.

This probably wasn't the ideal sort of conversation to be having at a weekly bonfire, but Sydney's social skills still weren't quite on par with most people's. It was a hazard of being home schooled within a very specific set of parameters.

Nick didn't mind the question. If he didn't want to talk about it he wouldn't have brought it up. When he first got here he didn't talk about where he came from or who he'd left behind. These days he found it easier to talk about Division, but he still hadn't mentioned Kira or Cassie to anyone.

He shrugged a little. "Hard to tell. They're trying to make a super person, one that had absolute control over their full potential. Problem is they're killing people trying to get there."

That didn't sound pleasant at all and Sydney wrinkled her nose. "What kind of potential? Do you have abilities of some sort?"

Her anti-magic sentiments courtesy of her Alchemist upbringing were slowly dissipating after being here for several months.

"Well," Nick said with a proud smile, "yes. Watch."

He had no idea that she might take this badly. Everyone else thought it was cool. Nick looked around and spotted a rock. A little bit of focus and the rock lifted to float over where it landed in his open hand. Then he turned a smile back to Sydney. "Neat, huh?"

It actually was pretty cool and wasn't like any of the magic she had seen the Moroi wield. "What is the source of your abilities?" she asked. "Are you a witch or something?"

"Genetics," he said. That proud smile remained on his face, but his eyes lost any hint of it. "My dad was a Mover, too. Dumbed down term for telekinetic." He chuckled as he looked at the rock in his hand. "Rumor has it that once powers started to show up Division swooped in and starting toying around with the people like guinea pigs. Dad got me out and I stayed out."

Just the name Division had an ominous ring to it and Sydney couldn't blame Nick's father for getting out or Nick for staying away. Most people seemed to have something heavy in their background that led to them accepting Arva's invitation, she she wasn't entirely surprised by his story.

"I'm sorry you had trouble, but it seems good that you're here," she said.

Nick gave her a more genuine smile for the sympathy. There was regret hiding in his eyes though, and guilt that he left Kira and Cassie back there to fend for themselves.

"Hard to say no to an offer like this."

"It is an amazing place," Sydney agreed. Even if it had taken her a little longer than some of the others to really settle into the casual sex atmosphere of the place.

"What about you?" Nick asked, changing the subject to her. "What's your story?" She seemed pretty sweet and well adjusted, not exactly a candidate for Sex Island.

Sydney had never been comfortable talking about herself and despite her sexual awakening and serious loosening up on the island, that hadn't changed. "Oh, well, I was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. Homeschooled. I have one older sister and one younger sister."

They were the most mundane details of her life and left a lot out, but she wasn't sure she wanted to talk about the Alchemists and their beliefs or how she was questioning everything she knew since coming here.

"That sounds real nice," Nick said. Too nice. She left something out. Something important. Like the reason she accepted the invitation to come here. So far the closest anyone came to coming here just because was that Maria chick, but even she'd been ordered to. Nick wasn't sure he should pry so he just gave Sydney a smile that said he knew she was holding back.

"It wasn't bad," Sydney said, appreciating the fact that he wasn't prying more. It wasn't that she was completely against the idea of talking about her past or what led her to accept Arva's invitation, but she was in a good mood and talking about those things would change that.

A change in topic seemed in order. "What's your favorite thing about being here?"

Nick's smile was part understanding and part knowing. He wouldn't press her to talk, but he was disappointed. People were supposed to trust each other here. He'd talked about his past. To be fair he hadn't trusted her with some of the darker bits, but this was just an opening conversation. At least he knew where the line was.

"I dunno," he said with a shrug. "It's nice to be able to sleep without being half aware all the time."

Sydney nodded. That seemed like a reasonable thing to appreciate. "I like that I've found out things about myself here that I might not have figured out at home," she shared. Things like that she could enjoy sex. And that maybe all the things her father said all those years about how her body wasn't good enough because it wasn't like the Moroi were wrong.

Nick's smile lightened as he looked at her. Sometimes it wasn't easy learning things about yourself, but it was always a good thing. "Nice! A lucky opportunity, then."

"Very much so," she agreed with a smile.

There were still a lot of things she had to figure out - like how to actually flirt - but she was making progress and feeling more comfortable both here and in her own skin every single day.

In Nick's opinion she didn't need to learn how to flirt. She was doing just fine the way she was. He already felt this MUST PROTECT instinct of his kick in like it had with Cassie, but Sydney fell into a vastly different category than the tweener had.

"Well, I for one am glad you're here," he said with a returned smile. "You brighten up the place."

Sydney's cheeks went pink at the compliment. "Thank you," she said. "That's... very sweet of you to say." She wasn't sure that she necessarily agreed with him, but it was still a nice gesture. She knew that she worked hard to keep the garden going and was grateful for all of the hard work and guidance that Melissa had provided on that front since she liked to feel useful.

"Nothin' but the truth, darling," Nick gave her a wink and one of his more cheeky smiles then sighed.

"I'm going to find something to drink," he said. "You want anything?"

The smile only served to make Sydney flush a little darker. "Thanks, but I'm good right now," she said, holding up her shell full of coffee.
