Wow, and here I thought I'd at least get a confirmation number for my flight. No peanuts, no on-board beverage, nada. Oh well, at least I didn't have to suffer through a lack of legroom.

Ahoy, everyone, cue one new arrival to the island. Anyone care to show the new girl around?

PS these comm bracelets are really impressive.

Don't think anyone's found peanuts yet, but we do have coffee, and even without creamer it's better than what you'd find flying commercial any day.

Hi there, Jack Harkness. Where'd you find yourself? There's a path leading up to where the rest of us are from the beach, but if you need an escort I'd be more than happy to oblige.

What a relief. I was preparing to steel myself to experiment with all sorts of leaves until I found something that resembled tea. Coffee's better.

Hi there, Jack. I'm Merry. I find myself surrounded by all sorts of sand, way prettier than anything they have in California. While I'm opposed to portraying myself the helpless type, I'd definitely welcome a tour guide if you're feeling up to show-and-tell.

You're not the only one. I'm surprised no one snapped during the couple weeks it took us to get some brewed.

A pleasure, Merry. I'd never assume any woman couldnt't take care of herself, but I'm always up for show and tell. Any notable landmarks around so I can find where you are and get showing?

Are you familiar with the palm tree that's really bent, kind of like it is bowing toward the ocean?

Yeah, passed it a few times. With that and a lovely redhead as my markers, you'll be seeing me in no time.

Hey. Welcome to the island. I'm Raven.

I am with you on the comm bracelets. I usually like to take things apart to see how they work, but I don't want to risk ruining it.

Raven, Merry.

I'm glad that I don't have to worry about dropping it and breaking the screen. I've murdered many phones in my day.

I've done the same to all kinds of communication devices. Are you like me and need to see how they work? Or was it more accidental?

Occupational hazards, mostly. Dropping them in water, smashing the screens, taking a bullet or two. Nothing so noble as taking them apart to learn how they function!

The most unfortunate part of the abrupt nature of our arrival here is that we don't have the opportunity to pack. However, we do have a sewing machine and fabric. And some of us have had clothes show up from home.

Hi, I'm Ruby.

Well, I'm not going to pretend anything in my wardrobe is appropriate for this weather. On the plus side, I'll finally be able to perfect my cross stitch and make my grandma proud.

Nice to meet you, Merry. Most of us wear as little as possible, to be honest, since the weather is generally cooperative.

Well, we're a bit beyond palm leaves, but yes. I see that Jack's going to show you the main camp. Someone will be able to hook you up with a shelter and some clothes and whatever else you need.

Well, hello there. My name's Finnick. Welcome to our little island paradise. Looks like Jack's got you covered as far as finding the camp. Once you get here we can get you set up in one of the empty shelters.

Thanks, Finnick. Very glad to be here.

So, when you say shelter, how shelter-y do you mean? Like cloth-hanging-over-sand, is it shanty style, or more like a small hut?

More like a small hut. Some of them even have real beds, but I need to talk to Sydney to make sure we have one of those left.

See, we had some people decide to leave, so we've been distributing their old shelters to the new people as they arrive.

Well, that's good news for me. Especially because I love thrift shopping. It's basically as close to treasure hunting a girl can get in the big city.

We had a woman here named Patty who decided we should save our clothing by just going naked all the time. She put it into practice herself, and she kept trying to convince others, without much success. Unfortunately she decided to go home. But there's always the Patty Option!

As much as I support bra burning and hashtag free the nipple, I don't think I'm ever going to get to the Patty Option.

Oh, me either. It's not so much that I mind being seen, but being naked all the time is not as comfortable as one might think. Especially while working.

Just thought I'd put it out there anyway.

Being naked in the sand is definitely not comfortable.

Speaking of working, do people have official jobs? What's the division of labor? Or is it just kind of fend for yourself?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]dist4_finnick

I would say that people have jobs, but they're not official. It's more like most people have just found their niche to help the community. The first couple weeks it was mainly about food and shelter, but we're past that now. We even have electricity in the main camp area.

The big project for the past few weeks has been the construction of a medical facility, because two of the young women (well only one now, the other went home) are pregnant already. We're just about done with that, and we're probably going to be working on a water and sewer system next. So those of us with construction skills or just strong backs have been working on that.

Other people have been working on other things to keep the community going. Sydney heads-up the all-important coffee bean project, and she also took over the garden when Melissa went home. Briseis sews and cooks. We got some farm animals and Ruby looks after them.

You definitely don't have to fend for yourself. Most of the meals are communal, we all tend to eat together in the main camp, which is also where we have our weekly bonfire get-togethers. There are several people who like to hunt, and I fish, so we kind of take turns providing the meat we need. Some people gather fruits and nuts. There are a lot of edible plants here, so food isn't a big problem, but it does take some time to gather.

If you don't have a skill but you want to learn it, people are pretty helpful about teaching what they know. We're all in this together, after all.

Sounds absolutely communist. Americans would be running around screaming with their hair on fire. I like it.

I guess you could say I have a green thumb, so anything with plants would fit me well. I'm great with a gun, except, well, I don't have one. I was going to school to be a doctor, so I have some passing medical knowledge.

I don't know anything about being communist, but I do like being equal and helping each other. Where I came from the government was pretty terrible.

I bet Sydney could use help with the garden, or there was another new guy, Eight, who wanted to get some larger scale agriculture going. We have a couple doctors, but they might need help. Martha and Bruce are their names.

You're from the dystopian future? Like, did the fae finally decide to destroy human society?

The future?

[info]dist4_finnick

Nothing to do with fae. Humans managed to mess things up on their own.

Yeah, there are people here from all different times and places. Sometimes their times are different by just a little, and sometimes by a lot. There used to be a guy here from my world, but 5 years further into the future. He knew me but I didn't know him. It was freaky.

You mean Thomas Jefferson didn't grant us them asylum after they were exiled from Europe? No American fae celebrities? Oh, right, dark future.

It's all kind of hard to swallow.

I've never heard of any of that, but I don't know who Thomas Jefferson is either, so it's hard to say. The schools where I grew up are kind of deliberately sketchy on history.

Yeah, it's a lot to take in. But it's a pretty nice place.
