Mary knew it was foolish to worry about John. For starters, he was one of the strongest men she had ever known. The years that they had spent apart had turned him into a much harder man in many ways (although he had never been anything but gentle to her), a man far more capable of defending himself than the one the yellow eyed demon had broken so long ago. It was also foolish to worry about him because there was nothing she could do to stop him. John felt driven to protect the city, to go out and take down the things that were hurting everyone else. She admired that in him, but right now she wasn't too fond of that noble side of him.
Ever since the alarm went off at midnight, Mary couldn't make herself stop worrying. She fussed at the covers to their bed, making them just right so she wouldn't see him getting dressed. She went to make him a snack in the kitchen so that her hands would have something to do other than hold on to him. She dragged things out of the refrigerator and cupboards until the snack had turned into a small breakfast, as though by keeping John well fed, she could keep her husband safe.
Mary couldn't lose him again.
She knew she wouldn't...she had faith that the forces who ruled this city brought her family together for a reason, and not just to tear them apart again. Still, with Sam all but gone, with Ruby's taunts about how she was just pushing him away more, the pregnancy hormones, the disappearances, and the way her family was already hurting, Mary couldn't help but think about the what if.
John came into the kitchen, and Mary knew it was nearly time for him to go. She screwed the lid on to his thermos of coffee and kissed him gently. "Be careful," She whispered. "And come back soon. Three hours of sleep isn't enough for anyone."
