As tempting as it was to nix the work he'd told Cathy he was going to do and head to the Lux to forget the world for a few hours, he'd been trying his damndest to cut down on the drinking and he needed a clear head to think. He hated being caught off guard and this had been one hell of a blindside. There was also the possibility that if he got drunk, he would feel the need to go have a discussion with responsible parties.
Drunken conversation with an ex, or higher ex-boss beings, was a stupid idea.
So work it was, despite doctor recommendation to take it easy, going through what had accumulated on his desk several times before he realized he was only stalling for time after Cathy's text. She wanted to talk and that was a conversation he wasn't ready to have, despite owing it to her. Rising up from his chair, stiff from sitting too long, he turned off the light and left.
The lights were off when he got home, all except the bedroom. He stood in the darkness for a good couple of minutes, trying to think of something eloquent that might get him another day or two before they had this talk. But as it had been since seeing Eve on the message boards, a part of his past dredged up and the consequences that might take place realized, his mind couldn't seem to focus and he couldn't think up the excuse he needed. Deep breath in, exhale.
He made his way to the bedroom and slid inside, shutting the door behind him. A soft, amused smile appeared as he saw Cathy fast asleep, book poised to slide from her fingers and hit the floor. He eased it out of her hand and shut it, setting it on the bedside table while he reached for the lamp to turn out the light.
