Having been on the off rotation on the patrol schedule had lead to an early night for Hiro Nakamura. He had settled in for a long night's sleep, but it had been cut short when nearly a few hours after he and Charlie had went to bed, Hiro was stirred awake by a sudden void in the bed. Staring at the empty spot in the bed, Hiro had finally lulled himself back to sleep after a few minutes by convincing himself that Charlie had probably just gotten up to go to the bathroom. But when he had woken up again that morning and found himself still alone, the quiet dread that it had happened again seeping into his bones. It hadn't taken long for him to figure out that the worst really what had happened.
The quiet resignation in his stance as he sat at the kitchen counter, slumped over the glass in front of him, shifting it slowly as he watched the water inside dance with the movement, was clear to anyone that might watch him. Charlie wasn't the only one that was gone. Noah hadn't been in his usual watchful position, and given the way that this worked it waves, he was willing to wager that there would be more people suffering the same sort of depression and confusion that he was enduring right now.
The only thing was that they could focus on it and allow themselves to grieve properly. Hiro couldn't allow himself that sort of mental weakness. What he needed to do now was press on, press on like Charlie would want him to. He had tried to swallow his grief before, but it had festered for five years and turned him sour and hard. He had been given a year more with being here, a year more than he would have gotten otherwise. He needed to treasure that, keep it close and try not to allow himself to fall back into what he had become before.
No matter how hard it was.
