It was a tense moment for Sylar, as he sat in the alley and waited to see if the cure he had made off with would work or not. He had been without his prized abilities for far too long, and he was truly starting to feel it. He felt powerless, useless. This cure was his last hope. If it didn’t work, he didn’t know what he would do…
And then, bam, just like he felt the familiar sensation, and the spinach can he had been staring intently at shook, and then came flying into his hand. He smiled. The cure had worked. He would need to test the rest of his powers, of course, but for the first time in days he felt a hope that he was returning to “normal.”
“I’m back,” he gleefully said to himself.
“You certainly are.”
Sylar sprung to his feet and turned to face this intruder. As happy as he was to have his powers restored, he was in no mood to be interrupted. Before him stood a young, smiling, clean-cut man in a business suit – almost too clean-cut, in fact. He had the kind of generic looks that made it impossible to tell him apart from the thousands of similar looking young men walking around New York. He wasn’t sure why, but this alone made Sylar take an instant disliking to him.
“I can tell you’re apprehensive, and have questions,” the man said, as he now walked towards Sylar and extended his hand. “Allow me to explain, Mr. Gray…”
That did it. All at once, Sylar realized why he didn’t like the look of this guy. There were not many people who were aware of Sylar’s real name, but he knew at least one organization that did – the “company.” And Sylar was in no mood to end up as their prisoner yet again. Sylar hadn’t expected his newly restored telekinesis to come in handy so soon, but he now used it to pick the man up and violently slam him against the nearby brick wall. He then rushed over and seized the man by the throat, pointing a finger at him – this wouldn’t seem like that scary of a gesture to your average person, but if this man knew as much about Sylar as he assumed he did, then he would understand. And yet, oddly, the man’s smile never vanished; he just kept looking at Sylar with that same crap-eating grin.
“I know what you’re thinking, Mr. Gray,” he managed to say, even with Sylar’s tight grip around his throat, “and I can assure you I’m not working for who you think I am. I do represent an organization, though…one that has its eye on you, and would like to make you an offer.”
“If your employers really have had their eye on me,” Sylar replied, “they would know I’m nobody’s puppet.” Still, even as he spoke, his curiosity was beginning to get the better of him. Who else could know about him? It was important to know that, he figured, so for that reason alone he would spare this man…for the moment. “Who are they?”
The man did not vocalize an answer. Instead, he reached into the inside of his suit-coat and produced a business card, which he handed over to Sylar. The card made no mention of the man’s name or position – it simply bore the name and logo of his company.”
“Wolfram & Hart,” Sylar read aloud. “A law firm? What could a law firm possibly want with me?”
The man, whose smile still had not left his face, made a gesture as if to say “well, if you let go of me I’ll tell you. Sylar released his grasp on the man’s throat, and the man took a second to straighten his tie before speaking. “Law is just one of our many…interests. There is a lot more to who we are, and that’s where you come in. Or, could come in. You see, we have reason to believe you might eventually play a pivotal role in future events. Of course, we can’t be sure of this, but if you were to accept our offer, perhaps we could all find out together.”
Sylar had no idea what this man was talking about, and his curiosity was beginning to turn back to annoyance. “And why is it I’ve never heard of your company, if you have so many ‘interests?’”
The man’s smile grew even wider. “We’re not exactly located…around here. In fact, that’s putting it lightly. Actually, that ties in to our offer. You see, if you take us up on it, you will have to leave this wo…this city. And why not? You’re a wanted man, with a whole host of enemies. We’re offering you a new start, in a new location – where you can begin your work again. We won’t interfere. We just ask that, if the time comes when we have need of you, you remember our little deal.”
Sylar considered the man’s words. He had no reason to believe anything the man said, and yet for some reason he did. Sylar spent enough of his time lying and manipulating to have a pretty good sense of when it was being done to him, and he could tell that this man honestly meant and believed everything he was saying. Plus, he was right about Sylar’s current precarious position in New York. If these “Wolfram & Hart” people were truly offering some sort of safe haven, it might be worth it to take them up on the deal – at least for now, just long enough to see where this was all going.
“OK,” Sylar answered, “maybe we can work something out…”
“That’s good to hear,” the man replied, cutting Sylar off. “In fact, that’s all we needed to hear.” With that, the man suddenly reached out and placed his hand on Sylar’s shoulder, and before Sylar knew it he blacked out.
It only lasted for a few seconds, but when he came to he felt groggy and unsteady. He looked around, and saw that the man was no longer anywhere to be found in the alley. In fact, it no longer appeared to be the same alley at all. What the? And there was something else, too. It was dark. Sylar looked up and saw that it was nighttime. But there had been daylight just seconds ago. How long had he been out?
Sylar exited the alley, and tried to get a sense of his surroundings. But something wasn’t right. He had spent his whole life in New York City – he knew it like the back of his hand. This was not New York City. What was going on here? And where the hell was he? Sylar turned and began walking down the sidewalk. He needed to find someone - anyone - to ask where they were. He needed answers…now.
