Sam was all but doing a dance of joy.
Vacation. He was getting a vacation. There was a sense of underlying guilt, but on some level he couldn't really acknowledge it. It was vacation. Some undecided period of time in which he didn't have to go out chasing escaped souls and demons. No more cuts, bruises, broken bones, and damaged dignity. He was free. At least for awhile. And the best part? The Devil hadn't struck him down. He hadn't been run down by a semi, and neither had Trance. He didn't care what she said. Even if she claimed that she couldn't be hurt, Sam didn't want to risk it. He'd probably drive her crazy with his nagging by the time he'd healed up enough to go back on the job.
But right now? Freedom. He had absolutely no idea what he was going to do with all the free time he now had, but it was going to be something in some way epic. He vaguely wanted to go to the beach, unable to believe that he'd been in Los Angeles as long as he had and had yet to do so. That was working for the Devil for you. Sam was always either working or in too much pain to do anything he wanted to do.
That was changing now. He just started driving. Got into the car the Devil had given him and drove. There was no real rhyme or reason to it and when he'd thought about could to the beach he hadn't been thinking this weird little abandoned strip of sand and rocks. But that was where he ended up. There wasn't even a parking lot. Sam pulled onto the edge of the sand and got out, slamming the door shut. Right, he'd chosen this? When a few miles down there was a public beach full with surfer chicks in bikinis. Obviously there was something wrong.
Sam locked the car before starting off on a walk down the beach. Wasn't like anyone was around to steal it, but he figured he'd better be safe. This was exactly the kind of place the Devil was likely to abduct him from.
He rolled his eyes. Thoughts like that just proved his life was decidedly not normal.
