Dexter Morgan turned a practiced smile on his sister and immediately drowned out what she was saying. A fact that escaped her notice for all of a minute before she punched him, hard, on the arm.
"Oh for fucks sake Dex, would it kill you to try to do that whole sharing your emotions thing?"
Might help if I had any to share. He thought before speaking aloud. "Sorry, I'll work on that."
Deb Morgan rolled her eyes with a muttered "Yeah right" and a scowl before she grabbed his half finished toast off his plate and took a huge bite. "I'm just saying, none of us knew that Doakes was the Bay Harbour Butcher, so why are you seeming to take it harder than anyone else?"
Dexter laughed slightly. "Yeah, that was, unexpected."
Though admittedly useful
His laugh seemed to confuse Deb as she frowned at him, confusion clear on her face. "So why'd you disappear like that, for days? Right after Rita nearly lost her kids? She needed to you Dex and you just... vanished, then come back with no explanation and you can't tell me it wasn't connected to Doakes."
Only vaguely, I was getting rid of another complication in my life. Wait, I can't tell her that.
"Sorry."
Deb shook her head, frustrated before heading off to her car. "Whatever, weirdo. I'll see you at work."
Dexter watched her go, with a faintly bemused expression before getting up and heading to his own car, ready to see the next serial killer Miami had to offer. He almost zoned out as he drove, the freedom that Doakes had unwillingly given him still filling him with a sense of zen like calm. So zen like in fact that he actually jumped when he looked up and saw that he was no longer in Miami. A slight frown, which for him meant downright confusion, creased his face as he stopped the car and climbed out, spying the sign saying 'Welcome to Santa Monica Beach'.
He stared at it for a long while, before finally coming to a conclusion.
"Okay. This is odd."
