This place was more than Charlie had expected. It was a hotel, yes, but it was where people lived. Stayed safe from the kinds of terrors that Charlie had only read about in fiction. She was having a little bit of a hard time believing that. She believed Hiro, of course, but she was the sort who needed to see it to really believe it.
She'd slept late, which had been wonderful, but a gnawing in her belly had her out of bed quickly, looking for something to eat. She remembered where Hiro had said the kitchen was (of course she did, she remembered everything), and found it pretty quickly. While she was putting together a bowl of oatmeal, her eyes fell on a book someone had left behind.
Charlie's opinion of good reading material had shifted over the past few months. Though she'd hardly admit to it now, she'd once been a sucker for those sort of romances you'd find in the grocery store. 'Bodice-rippers', one of her friends had teasingly called them. She'd dabbled here and there into other things, but it hadn't been until this funny thing had started in her brain - all this remembering - that her tastes had widened. Widened now so that any available reading material piqued her natural curiosity, and she had to read it. So even though the book was bland, thick, and bore the title of California State Statutes, revised 5/2005, she settled down the bowl of oatmeal beside it, flipped open the cover, and started to read.
