Characters: Daphne Greengrass & Ernie Macmillan
Setting: DMLE training rooms, maybe around 6:30 am
Rating: PG
Summary: Daphne is trying to power through her hangover, Ernie might have something to say about that.

Tequila was always one of those things that seemed like a good idea at the time. Even knowing she was going to regret it in the morning never once stopped her. After her long weekend, today was going to be her first day back. It was also the first morning she could wake up in her flat and actually think of it as her flat. Unsurprisingly, they didn't really make things any easier when the alarm went off. The world a bit blurry and feeling a bit sick, Daphne dragged herself out of bed for her morning run. A few miles before at least an hour in the training room before her shift officially started should help clear her head some. If anything, perhaps getting back into the routine was what she needed.

Or maybe what she needed was to get a few hits in even on one of the training dummies. She had made it to the Ministry a little more than hour before his shift, which meant that at the most she would run into the people working third shift, who probably wouldn't bother her. Daphne did however check in, letting the shift supervisor know she was here. She also needed to leave her bag with more work appropriate clothes at her desk so she had something to change into from what she was wearing now.

Daphne set the training exercise to easy just wanting something to warm up on and knowing that her reaction times were going to be pathetic this morning. She needed to sweat off the alcohol not get her ass handed to her before the day even really began. After only a few round she paused to grab water in the hopes that would help the headache.

Daphne sighed quite loudly. To some level she could understand his concern and the stance he was taking. Bottom line was he was a supervisor, it was his job to make sure the people in the field were not at all compromised. Still, even knowing that didn't mean that she had to like it any.

"I appreciate the concern, but I do feel the need to say that I would never allow myself into the field if I was not fully prepared for the task." Especially as that would ruin her good field record, which was one of the few things that earned her any respect in the office. "You were quite clear in teaching me that point and so far I haven't disappointed or been a poor pupil, have I?"

Ern sighed at the question that was posed to him. "No," he admitted. "But I wouldn't want you to be at risk of doing so, either. It'll be on my head if you manage to mess up--especially if I knew you were working while impaired." Well that's not to mention that Ern typically took guilt and personal responsibility to new levels as a natural part of who he was.

"And just since I'm letting you stay for now doesn't mean that I won't send you home if I do believe that you're not competent to be working today--or ever for that matter," he added, in case she didn't already know.

"I'm to the job, Macmillan." And right now she needed something else to focus on. So really once she got through the tail end of the hangover, Daphne would be good to go. No one would have been any wiser if Papa Macmillan hadn't caught her.

"But I think that you came in here to get a work out in, rather than talk, so what do you say?" While she was open to a sparring partner, she was also using this as a sort of litmus test. If he agreed to it, she would consider this to be a not issue and if he didn't well a lot of different things could be depend on the reason for turning her down.

"Alright, alright," Ern said, conceding somewhat to Daphne's insistence at being fit to work.

Or there could be another line of thought that could say that could say that Ern would use this as a litmus test as to whether she was capable of performing on such a day. Just to assess for reaction time, balance and speed. All of which were necessary to perform well. He could tell if she wasn't up to her usual capabilities.

"Well it's hard to say no when you put it like that. Okay, let's see what you have," Ern said in an invitation to spar. He readied himself her first move--to some extent Justin may be somewhat accurate in his accusations of sexism.

Daphne smirked at him. Regardless of whatever litmus test that was going to happen, it was going to be good. Even not at 100% she was still good and now she had a bit of a point to prove beyond the standard ones she disproved every day. When it became clear he was waiting for her to make the first move, she pulled out her wand. However, she didn't move immediately. Instead Daphne took a moment to assess the situation, recalling what she knew of his style in fighting and also what resources she had around.

The absolute best thing about this as compared to her dueling competitions was that anything goes. Finally she moved, coming toward him in a sort of running lunge to sweep his legs and knock him off his feet. And if that wasn't enough to get him she cast a spell - not at him, but rather at her water bottle. This way if he dodged her physical movement he might be met with a splash of water in the face.

Ern was one who was promoted for his organizational and tactical skill, and ultimately being able to keep a team together. But that wasn't to say that he had significantly lesser skill in combat. He typically did depend on both physical strength than gross motor speed, but could quickly turn a good spell with what and who was there. He wasn't one to completely doubt the skill of his opponent, even if he had some sense that they may be impaired. And beyond being a gentleman he wasn't one to let any female off any easier than his male colleagues--it wouldn't be fair to them to have a lessened training opportunity, after all.

He did dodge away from her lunge, turning to drew his wand from the splash of water. He aimed a spell at a punching bag on the corner closest to that left hand side from where he drew his wand and sending it through the air towards where he had anticipated her movements to take her.

In a pure wand fight, Daphne had little doubt that she could beat most people in the department. That might have been arrogance, but it was also kind of true. They might have made fun of her for the sport of dueling, but she was good. The problem was that when it came to the reality of being a good hit wizard, it was seldom a pure wand fight and she was still working on the more physical part of the it.

However, there was similarities between the two and the best way to not get caught was to not be too predictable.

Daphne ducked out of the way from the punching bag, it just grazing her shoulder, but not throwing her off. She hit it with a spell so that it would pick up speed and slam into the wall. From there it would bounce, acting not unlike a bludger and adding another obstacle for a little while. Once that spell was in motion, she turned her wand back to Macmillan casting a binding spell toward his feet. It was still basic things with a bit of flair to them. They were still warming up.

Ern cast a quick deflecting spell on the spell that she sent in his direction and another one to the bludger-like punching bag. It shot back in the opposite direction towards his opponent. He quickly followed that with a disarming spell.

She wasn't doing particularly badly, considering, but this was just a warm-up.

Even with the distraction of the punching bag coming back at he, not losing her wand with the disarming spell was basic. Still, there was some merit in pretending to slip up, let the other person think for only a second you were fumbling with your wand. It was the sort of play where she would make sure to have a spare wand on her person - able to reach for that one while the attacker thought they had won until it was too late.

However, this morning her spare wand wasn't within reach. So she choreographed a sort of fumble that allowed her to kick the stool that previously held her water bottle toward him. As the stool went flying she readjusted the grip on her wand and sent a blasting spell toward the punching bag to have it explode between them.

Having the stool sent in his direction, Ern transfigured it into a rope and sent it coiling back towards Daphne. At about the very same time there was an explosion where the punching bag had once been (well so much for the rope?).

Using the temporary decreased visibility of the explosion, Ern used it to close the distance between them, by quietly and quickly making his way towards her last known whereabouts.

Daphne chose not to act against him. This time she simply cast a spell to help her see through the mess the minor explosion made. Chaos was always good. She could work with chaos. However, she also wanted to see what he could do beyond simply defend her. Not that it wasn't a bad approach, just that it wasn't all that exciting.

She threw up a repealing charm in a wide circle around her so that he wouldn't be able to get close, but also wouldn't be able to exactly pinpoint where she was based on the spell.

Ern was the true and typical conservative dueller, if anything it wasn't as interesting as it was quick and practical, using whatever was around and what his opponent threw at him. It was usually a safe measure of what was appropriate and what wasn't quite overboard when it came to a review of a case. What made it different typically was how it was used, timed, and spun.

He applied a clarity charm so that he can see his target and felt the force of the repelling charm. He moved to quickly recover from it and recognizing it in turn he threw a sneezing hex and a leg-locker curse in quick succession, in his pattern of distract and immobilize. If he wasn't able to approach he would have to contend with battling from afar.
