Entry tags:!status: incomplete, ^date: november 16 2003, character: dean thomas, character: seamus finnigan

Characters: Dean & Seamus, plus some NPCs
Setting: St. Mungo's hospital, Sunday November 16th, 4:30 AM
Summary: Dean wakes up to find Seamus there, but the reunion isn't all sunshine.
Rating: Worksafe

Dean didn't dream. Whatever potion he'd been given blocked out everything, even the intense pain of the Skele-Gro, at least while he was still asleep. When he woke up he'd feel it all again, blessedly dulled but still present. He came awake slowly, pain seeping up from his fingertips and crawling up in arm, feeling like an army of stinging creatures. His brow furrowed, as though he was trying to ignore the pain and go back to sleep. But something made him open his eyes instead, welcoming consciousness.

It was still dark out, before sunrise. Dean's left arm lay above the crisp white sheets and cream blanket he lay under. His ring arm was tucked beneath it, and from the way it felt, it was wrapped in bandages. And hurting. But Dean didn't notice his arm or the sheet or anything else. What he noticed was Seamus sitting by his bedside.

Dean moved his left arm toward him, only a few inches, and manged to croak out a very quiet, "Seamus?"

"Ludicrously brave," Dean replied with a smile, letting his eyes close for a moment. "I like that. It think it was mostly ludicrous though." Feeling Seamus's hand in his imparted a sort of strength. It may have all been psychological strength but he needed it and he took it gratefully.

"I wish I had too," Dean responded with a low and intense fury in his voice. "I tried...I tried to protect your mum, Seamus," Dean whispered. "I'm sorry. I don't even know if the witch would have tried so hard to come after us if not for me." He let out a shaky breath. "It was when I looked into Ron's memory and saw her, what she did to Penelope. I drew a sketch and Ron was going to circulate it."

Dean fell silent but only for a moment. "Then I saw her, in Diagon. She was looking at your mum at first, and then she saw me, and I recognised her and tried to get your mum away. Soon as the witch saw I knew her face...she came after us."

Dean pulled his gaze away from Seamus's. "I should have tried harder in the alley and none of this-"

Seamus gave Dean something approaching an arch look. "Says the man who fought his way through a battle without a wand." But he knew Dean knew what he meant, and that he liked it? That just made Seamus glad.

It was something more to hold onto as Dean spoke. It seemed like his mother had been hiding something after all, but it was too late to do anything about it now. Damn stubborn woman! "Don't," Seamus bit out. "Don't you dare apologize for doing your damn best to protect her. It's not your fault. I know and...and she knows." His voice caught, but he pressed on. "You fought, and that's enough Dean. It's enough for me, so just don't..." He trailed off, not caring that tears were streaming down his face.

Dean actually managed a sheepish look at that. Seamus had given him such an earful when he'd learned Dean had shown up to fight a magical war without his wand. Dean didn't think that was that big an issue. He fought, won an wand, and proceeded. Only in hindsight did he realise he probably should have thought that one through better.

Dean fell silent thought at Seamus's admonition. He squeezed Seamus's hand again, wishing he could sit up properly and just hug him. But the moment suddenly and abruptly passed when the door to the room opened and two people, one witch and one wizard came in. Both were dressed like DMLE officials, down to their badges. The wizard was older, the witch young and fresh-faced, looking much like she was still in training.

The wizard spoke first. "Ah Mr. Thomas, you're awake. If you'd be so good as to answer a few questions for us, we can let you continue to recuperate." Dean squinted in confusion at first and then nodded in agreement. They probably just wanted to know about who had done this.
