Characters: Dean & Seamus, plus some NPCs
Setting: St. Mungo's hospital, Sunday November 16th, 4:30 AM
Summary: Dean wakes up to find Seamus there, but the reunion isn't all sunshine.
Rating: Worksafe

Dean didn't dream. Whatever potion he'd been given blocked out everything, even the intense pain of the Skele-Gro, at least while he was still asleep. When he woke up he'd feel it all again, blessedly dulled but still present. He came awake slowly, pain seeping up from his fingertips and crawling up in arm, feeling like an army of stinging creatures. His brow furrowed, as though he was trying to ignore the pain and go back to sleep. But something made him open his eyes instead, welcoming consciousness.

It was still dark out, before sunrise. Dean's left arm lay above the crisp white sheets and cream blanket he lay under. His ring arm was tucked beneath it, and from the way it felt, it was wrapped in bandages. And hurting. But Dean didn't notice his arm or the sheet or anything else. What he noticed was Seamus sitting by his bedside.

Dean moved his left arm toward him, only a few inches, and manged to croak out a very quiet, "Seamus?"

Seamus had nearly run down half the night staff at St. Mungo's in his rush to get to Dean's side. One sturdy, no-nonsense, but sympathetic mediwitch finally managed to corral Seamus enough to calm him down and explain Dean's condition. Not that the careful explanation had done much to prepare Seamus for the sight of him when the Hit Wizard at Dean's door had allowed Seamus in.

Dean looked like he'd been through hell and back, but he was alive. It made Seamus break down and sob with relief. He'd been glad Dean hadn't been awake to see him like that, and he spent the next couple of hours just watching Dean breathe until finally Seamus slipped into a light doze himself.

It was Dean's voice that woke him. Weak and hoarse as it was, it was enough to snap Seamus awake and he was at Dean's side in an instant. "I'm here, love. I'm here." His voice shook as he laid a hand gently on Dean's forehead, but he tried for a smile. "I should see the other guy, yeah?"

Dean had no idea what was going on around him. All he knew was that he'd somehow made it to St. Mungo's by sheer force of will apparently. He had no idea that his wounded hand had saved his life. If it hadn't been burned so badly, so deeply, he'd have bled out during his escaped. As it was, that witch's setting his arm aflame had actually cauterized the ghastly wounds from his bone shards being ripped out like iron filings to a muggle magnet.

He had even less of an idea that there was a Hit Wizard outside, guarding the door as a precaution. He hadn't seen the prophet, and though he knew Seamus's mother was dead, he had no idea he was wanted for questioning. As a potential suspect. The thought would have choked him into shocked silence.

Instead he managed a very small and weary smile at Seamus's words. "Nasty head wound I left her with. I think." He didn't try moving anything more than his eyes in Seamus's direction. "So glad you're here. Went home. Couldn't find you. Came here."

Her. Seamus's face darkened briefly at the word, his jaw tensing. Pandora. Seamus wanted her dead for what she'd done, tortured as she'd tortured Dean and so much worse. But there was nothing he could do about her now, and Dean needed him, so Seamus pushed the rage down as far as it would go and tried to concentrate on Dean's smile.

"You went home? but how did you get away? How—?" Seamus shook his head. It didn't matter how Dean had managed it. All that mattered was that he was back, alive. "You'll always come back to me, won't you? No matter what." And Seamus needed that reassurance now more than ever.

Dean couldn't missed the flicker of dark anger across Seamus's face. He knew Seamus had to suspect, if he didn't know for certain by now, that his mother was gone. There's no way Dean would have come back without her, if she'd still been alive. He couldn't bring himself to confirm it or to ask if Seamus already knew, especially not after that heart-rending little statement Seamus made.

Dean instinctively tried to move his right hand and his eyes went shiny when it didn't move. So instead he struggled to twitch his left, which responded, though sluggishly due to his medication. "Always, my love. I'll always come back."

He exhaled slowly and tried to answer Seamus's other questions. "I had to wait...until she got distracted, overconfident. Hit her with a lamp. Knocked her out I think. Flooed home. Passed out I think, then Flooed here."

Dean frowned. "She took me because I recognised her." Forming the full sentence took effort, but it was necessary. "She saw that I recognised her."

Seamus caught the small movement of Dean's left hand and carefully took it with his own. He very pointedly didn't look at Dean's heavily bandaged right arm, trying not to think about what the mediwizard had said about possible permanent nerve damage. Seamus's smile at Dean's reassurance didn't quite reach his eyes, though.

"You really are ludicrously brave, you know that," Seamus said, huffing out a small laugh before sobering. "I wish you could have killed her." His voice caught in his throat as an image of his mother, cold and so still, came to him. Seamus closed his eyes briefly and made himself swallow down the grief.

They snapped open, though at what Dean said next though, and he unthinkingly squeezed his hand. "You what? What do you mean, you recognized her?"

"Ludicrously brave," Dean replied with a smile, letting his eyes close for a moment. "I like that. It think it was mostly ludicrous though." Feeling Seamus's hand in his imparted a sort of strength. It may have all been psychological strength but he needed it and he took it gratefully.

"I wish I had too," Dean responded with a low and intense fury in his voice. "I tried...I tried to protect your mum, Seamus," Dean whispered. "I'm sorry. I don't even know if the witch would have tried so hard to come after us if not for me." He let out a shaky breath. "It was when I looked into Ron's memory and saw her, what she did to Penelope. I drew a sketch and Ron was going to circulate it."

Dean fell silent but only for a moment. "Then I saw her, in Diagon. She was looking at your mum at first, and then she saw me, and I recognised her and tried to get your mum away. Soon as the witch saw I knew her face...she came after us."

Dean pulled his gaze away from Seamus's. "I should have tried harder in the alley and none of this-"

Seamus gave Dean something approaching an arch look. "Says the man who fought his way through a battle without a wand." But he knew Dean knew what he meant, and that he liked it? That just made Seamus glad.

It was something more to hold onto as Dean spoke. It seemed like his mother had been hiding something after all, but it was too late to do anything about it now. Damn stubborn woman! "Don't," Seamus bit out. "Don't you dare apologize for doing your damn best to protect her. It's not your fault. I know and...and she knows." His voice caught, but he pressed on. "You fought, and that's enough Dean. It's enough for me, so just don't..." He trailed off, not caring that tears were streaming down his face.

Dean actually managed a sheepish look at that. Seamus had given him such an earful when he'd learned Dean had shown up to fight a magical war without his wand. Dean didn't think that was that big an issue. He fought, won an wand, and proceeded. Only in hindsight did he realise he probably should have thought that one through better.

Dean fell silent thought at Seamus's admonition. He squeezed Seamus's hand again, wishing he could sit up properly and just hug him. But the moment suddenly and abruptly passed when the door to the room opened and two people, one witch and one wizard came in. Both were dressed like DMLE officials, down to their badges. The wizard was older, the witch young and fresh-faced, looking much like she was still in training.

The wizard spoke first. "Ah Mr. Thomas, you're awake. If you'd be so good as to answer a few questions for us, we can let you continue to recuperate." Dean squinted in confusion at first and then nodded in agreement. They probably just wanted to know about who had done this.
