Slytherins get shit done.
Characters: Adrian and Cade
Setting: Catch up at work - working Saturdays sucks. 1PMish on the 15th
Summary: Adrian and Cade have been up to their respective necks in unsolved murders. Sounds like just the time to catch up and make some progress.
Rating: Worksafe, possibly some swearing.

As much as Adrian liked actually doing his job, everything about his tenuous position aside, he mostly disliked working on Saturdays. On the plus side, it was much quieter and he could get things done, but on the down side, he had little free time as it was and he was consistently filling it up with more work. He hadn't even seen Melinda in days, though he'd sent a message expressing his concern at the loss of her shop. He meant to go by, perhaps tomorrow since he wasn't working then.

In the meantime though he had work to do. Luckily for him, Cade was working today as well. That meant there was someone else there working on similar cases that he could trust to bounce ideas off of and wasn't likely to get carried away in complaining about paperwork, goofing off, or being downright lazy like some of the very junior aurors who dragged their feet coming in on weekends.

Adrian glanced over at the other auror and asked suddenly, "How well do you know Eli Chambers?"

While Cade hated paperwork, he was meticulous about it. So when he suspected that some of the notes he had regarding the other cases tied to his might not be entirely accurate, he took it upon himself tom come in and go over each and every case with a dedicated precision that spoke of a frankly unhealthy drive for perfection.

Of course, he didn't mind the distraction when Adrian bothered him with a seemingly random question. "Not much besides the business with his father and that he's probably completely mad," Cade said with his usual bluntness. He looked up from his notes with a small frown. "Why?"

Adrian frowned and set down the file he was holding. "That last bit is my concern. When the living inferi invaded, I wound up fighting off a few of them alongside him, but only for a brief moment. He was more interested in what they were. He let me accompany him to his own department, where I'm quite certain if he hadn't suddenly gotten cold feet about letting me his his process and his methods, I would have watched him experiment on the thing."

Adrain exhaled. "I think he's unhinged certainly, but I'd have liked to know what he found out. We did find out in short order that they were former Azkaban prisoners and that they'd all been wearing pins that might have functioned as portkeys. We made certain not to touch them."

Adrian was more thinking out loud than talking at this point, but he wanted to make sure Cade knew what he knew. "I mentioned it to Gaskin. I think Gaskin might want to know what Chambers found out, but at the same time, I got the feeling Gaskin trusts Chambers less than us." At least Gaskin knew how well Adrian and Cade worked, and oversaw them. Chambers wasn't his department. Chambers may not have been a Slytherin who started working during the ministry upset, but his family history was cloudy at best.

Cade sat up straighter as he listened to Adrian, his expression growing more forbidding by the moment. "Are you saying Chambers caught one of them to experiment on? You didn't leave it alone with him, did you?" Because while Cade hadn't held back while fighting the living inferi off, self-defense was completely different from strapping one down to do all sorts of things to it.

But from the sound of it, what was done was done. Cade glowered at Adrian. "I didn't know about the portkeys, but that certainly makes clear that someone arranged this whole thing. To what purpose, though? General mayhem?" He doubted it. The forethought required for something like this spoke of rational planning. He made a mental note to scour the papers and reports that came in that day to see if something had gotten overlooked in all the excitement.

As for Gaskin not trusting Chambers, Cade only grunted. Anyone would be a fool to trust Chambers and Gaskin was certainly no fool. Hard-nosed, but no fool. "If Gaskin wants to know something, he'll find a way to know it."
